Not any more than Balmer avatars, Reggie avatars, Miyamoto avatars or Jobs avatars, to be honest.

Some of them are very creative and funny and are used in the right context, I feel like some of them are just made for the hell of it though and although I don't find those particular ones annoying, I do find them pointless.

Really?  That is always the first thing I notice and how i associate people.  For example if you changed your avatar I probably wouldnt realize who you was because I associate a lot of people with there avatar instead of username

I know what you mean, but there are only about 3 people I associate with avatars - timmeh, badgenome, kitler. (I guess happydolphin too, before he changed it.)
