The 3DS is actually doing too good in Japan. It worries me that even more big franchises will end up getting the handheld treatment.

I struggle to see why this is a bad thing, so long as main story FF and Zelda don't go handheld, I'll be fine.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

He's just worried that Versus will be switched to 3DS...

VGChartz

Well, in their respective opening weeks on DS, DQIV, DQV and DQVI did 600k, 680k and 900k. The LT numbers of the first two ended up roughly twice their FW, with 1.27m for IV and 1.36m for V, while DQVI only managed 50% more, ending with 1.35m.

I'd wager that the reason for DQVI's comparatively weak legs was the fact that the DS had already entered its precipitous decline by its release. Considering that the 3DS is pretty much exactly hitting its prime right now and that these shipments suggest first week sales more in line with DQVI than with the others (~800k?), 1.5m LT should be a piece of cake. In fact, if all goes well and 3DS really has that best year ever this year, even 2m could theoretically be possible, including digital sales.

Oh, this is fun! DQVII is making me happy both by slaughtering the charts and by being my second most anticipated game right now.

Oh wow this is incredible!

Not bad. Something tells me DQXI will end up on the 3DS.

It's more likely that DQVI's legs were weaker, because it opened significantly higher due to many DQ fans already owning the system because of previous games. But I don't disagree with the notion that the legs could have been a bit better for DQVI, if it released earlier in the system's lifecycle.

DQVII has a good chance to outsell all of the DS remakes individually, because the demand for JRPGs is high and the 3DS is far from being oversaturated in that genre, meaning that a JRPG fan doesn't need to be overly fond of the DQ series to consider picking this one up.

That too, of course. DQVI was the only one to release after DQIX's release on DS so obviously the DQ userbase had fully migrated to the DS by its launch.

As for your second comment, I really don't think it works that way. Most of the time, people don't decide to buy a game just because they want to buy some game even though they don't particularly like it. If someone isn't particularly fond of DQ, the lack of similar JRPGs probably wouldn't get him to buy it. In fact, I'd say that having a whole lot of JRPGs on a console is more likely to be beneficial to each one of them than it is to cause oversaturation. Obviously, if you own the console because of a certain game, you're probably going to try out similar games as well.

Japan has clearly become handheld-land over the last 8 years, and if Final Fantasy 7 is ever remade it is going to be for a handheld

SquareEnix?

Bring the Final Fantasy Remake to 3DS

Good news and bad news all rolled into one. Now we have more remakes to look forward to. Nintendo might do Ocarina of Time And Again.

I see no wrong with remakes if they're justified. DQ VII is more than justified and it really helps round out the efforts made into redoing IV, V, and VI on DS. I'd hope they do the same for the first 3 DQs.

They did do remakes of those on the SNES, PS1 and I think on the GBA but given the amount of time since then, they will probably try again soon.

I'm hoping it does well enough to inspire a more traditional Dragon Quest XI in case there was any doubt in Square Enix's head about that.
