Just to put it simple this is the result of giving fans something they never asked for, same with RE6, DMC4 wasn't good? yes, franchise needed some fresh air? yes, was DmC a bad game? no, BUT did the fans asked for something as drastic as a reboot? no, there you go, take risks when you know what you are doing...
and by the way, hey Toriyama did fans really asked for more Lightning? we'll find out...

I dont see why fans cant just see this game as an alternate universe version of DMC and enjoy it for what it is anyways and it is a great action game. Them not wanting to buy it just cos it doesnt have their Dante in it is pretty lame imo. As if this game had any other name i bet alot of them DMC fans would of been on it and talking about how much of a good game it is no problem.

I mean Comics and stuff do the whole alternate universe thing all the time lulz xD

If it had another name I would have bought it, beacause that would have meant that the Devil may Cry franchise, as we know it, has not been killed in order to make this game.   But considering what I (and most fans) expect from a DMC game, and the game we got, which does not represents at all what a DMC game is (I think it is at most a 7), I wont support the reboot.

Because no one wanted an alternate universe version my friend, the problem is that they killed(as in ''ended'') Devil May Cry then --dramatization-> made a game that had nothing to do (with DMC), different characters, different settings and different story and tried to cash in on the fans by slaping onto his characters the names of the devil may cry ones -end-- ||***instead of the much better idea***|| no one says that is a bad game but is not devil may cry and yes i know that's what reboot means, the problem here is that there was nothing wrong with Devil May Cry, fans loved everything about it, why would you demolish it and try to launch a new franchise over it's ruins? That's waht pissed people off and personally i have to agree. And yes it was a good game.

See zero? that's what i mean.

Shame. Devil May Cry 4 sucked and DmC is actually good. I guess they should have known not to mess with the fan base.

Fans voted with their wallets.

How can Ninja Theory still be in business all their games have bombed?

Is this real life? Are people this short-sighted?

Edit: Nearly everything everyone is speculating on has no source. Yes, its sales are disappointing, but to call it a complete failure after 2-3 weeks is just dumb.

Let's see, people doesn't care about this game anymore even Capcom lowered its expectations to 1.2M (less than DMC4 on PS3 alone), Metal Gear Rising is coming in 2 weeks and a month after that God of War Ascension will be released.  DmC bombed.

Not sure what these have to do with DmC. A new game in the Devil may Cry series was never going to do more than DMC4. Sequels to a game already released on the same console almost always see sales decreases. This is the rule with very few exceptions. That said, a lot of things have changed since in 5 years, and I don't think MG: R and God of War will do fantastically in sales either. DmC will likely finish around DMC2 lifetime. Not very good, but not the death of the franchise.

Its called competition.

I can't imagine someone who would not buy one game they would have bought otherwise because of an equally niche title like MG: R. God of War, maybe since it has some broader appeal. Considering the buying habits of most gamers that are targeted by DmC and MG: R, I don't think it's very relevant.

Oh man... Let's go back to the beginning. DmC was made because Capcom wanted to westernize the franchise and get some of the God of War audience, they did this in an attemp to get more sales NOT LESS, Capcom and NT failed. The game is expensive, outsourced to an UK studio that made Heavenly Sword a game that sold 1.4M and didn't made a profit. DmC had Avatar's studio mocap, Unreal engine and a quite decent marketing push.

People who want Hack and Slash will be buying GOWA and MGR in the future months ahead. Well I'm out, RIP Devil May Cry.

Lesson is to not change Dantes look.

Had no real effect on the sales of the game.

The whole controversy obviously affected the game's sales, lets not be naive here.

Ninja theory blatantly defied and angered fans of the original series so the backlash was predictable. If this was a DMC5 i would have bought it myself, beeing DmC im in no rush to get it. The problem here is they lost sales on the core fanbase, and got some more from the average consumer. Apparantly the trade-off wasnt worth it. As simple as that.

It might be better this way. I always said this game should've been a new IP and not a Devil may Cry game, and this is why.

Actually im curious to see how the sales values of MGR:R will compare to this. I enjoyed playing the demo of that alot more than Dmc demo, though both were good.

If it had been a new IP, the same people would probably be saying "pfft this is just a Devil May Cry clone" and wouldn't have bothered with it.

Heavenly Sword didn't make a profit because it was expected to sell a lot more at the start at $60. It took several years before it finally crossed 1 million and that was at bargain bin prices. You contradict yourself several times though. The game is expensive, listing Avatar's studio which you assumed to cost millions, while mentioning Unreal Engine which is widespread because it's cheap to use!

It's pretty apparent you really want to this game to fail. It's a shame because apparently the game is better than any of Capcom's efforts, so you'd hope that people who want hack and slash would buy a good hack and slash. Even if the main character isn't a silver haired pretty boy.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I don't really know, but I have enjoyed all of their games that I have played so far, I just hope they find a new game to work on since they do make decent games

They better hope this thing has some legs because if it does not and gets heavily discounted even if it gets to 1.2mill alot of those sales are gonna be 30-40 dollars instead of 60.
