Forums - Gaming - Iwata: Cloud gaming not the future

Lol Iwata. He will eat those words once Gaikai can stream 1080p games on PS4. It will become a huge part of next gen.

He also said he didn't like the current online platforms or something, thats why WiiU lacks achieve/trophy system.

Yeah, because hundreds of millions of people have the physical infastructure capable of streaming full 1080p games with no lag whatsoever...

oh wait...   Probably less than 5% have that capability right now, and most of those people will be in the east. Cloud gaming is good on paper, but with the current internet speeds and coverage worldwide it is just not viable. and it will take more than 10 years to completely rebuild the infastructure required to handle what is needed.

Cloud gaming would effectively mean the end of the home console though wouldn't it?

Why would you need a $300 box? Any smart TV could stream a game directly on its own, all you would need is a Bluetooth controller and voila.

yeah that is all you need. Plus a connection capable of providing you enough speed and bandwidth to provide you with uninterupted gameplay, without your ISP setting a limit or throttling your connection. And what if the Cloud gaming company goes bust? *cough* OnLive *cough*, you have just lost all your games, all your saves and you will be left with just a TV.

Sounds like the future to me -_-

I like these rare instances of sanity, they give me hope.

Mind explaining this statement? I'm just curious as to what you find sane in this and what Nintendo has done that is not sane. Just curious

Saying that cloud gaming is not the future is sane, because cloud gaming is not the future.

Insane decisions by Nintendo include things like 3DS pricing and leaving the launch window to third parties and, of course, most things concerning the Wii U: Controller, branding, pricing, lack of game announcements pre-launch, focusing on wrong features (i.e. Miiverse over Virtual Console). We've witnessed how damaging a lossleading business model is with the PS3, but that didn't stop Nintendo from adopting it for the Wii U. Abandoning a successful strategy in favor of a proven unsuccessful strategy is insane.

Why don't you see cloud gaming as the future then? I could think of a couple of reasons, I'm just curious what you think.

I think you have some points redarding stupid moves made by Nintendo, but then there are a few I really can't agree with...

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Cloud gaming takes control out of consumers' hands. They won't own their games (only licenses to play them). No incentive to build a games collection means less money spent. Less money spent means it's an unsustainable business. An unsustainable business is OnLive. But it's not just the server companies that will go under, but also developers. Where's the money supposed to come from?

Sounds pretty reasonable!! Best arguement was the last one imo

the day cloud gaming becomes the norm is the day i will quit. I like having my consoles and physical copies of games taking up so much space in my house lol.

You and me both.

That and the fact that I'm not going to allow myself to be reliant on the 'goodwill' of a company to keep something I like alive for an indefinite period of time.

Add me to the list. No way I'm trusting a company that could go under or otherwise mess with my games, to hell with that. I want to actually OWN my games, not just access to them, which could be taken away at any moment. Not to mention the waste of internet...

This is a reason I also agree with. I hate this gen as it relies on updates and patches to get a lot of the games working. Tell me how I will get these updates in 10 years time if I ever want to relive some of these games with my kids (when they arrive lol). Oh sorry son we can't play skyrim cause the patches are no longer available.  For this reason alone I think this is why retro gaming is going up in price. Mianly cause you can plug and play and not rely on bloody updates for a game to function.

He will eat that words in 10yrs when more than like 5% of all households have a sufficent connection for FullHD streaming

i just saw, in relation to the house of cards release, that 25% of americans already subscribe to netflix and the number is growing. clearly the market is responding to streaming based content.  this isn't 10 years out.  it's coming this holiday and in 3-4 years time it will be a big part of the gaming industry.  in 10 years it will probably be the dominant source of money for gaming.

How do you buffer a game?  You can't.  The infrasturcture is going to need to be a lot better.  As Milkyjoe already stated, this is also going to be a ton of data for ISPs to handle.  They already have caps and are throttling users.

Where did you get that 25% from?  I'm guessing straight from Netflix with round up like that (lol).  The latest Netflix financials (Q4 2012) have 27.15 million subscribers to streaming, but only 25.47 million of those are paying customers.  With 313.9 million Americans (2012), I am guessing they are talking households.  That is at 114.8 million (2011).  So 23.6% best case, or 22.2% paying.  Close I guess.

Anyway, my point is that streaming video and streaming a game where the user has input are two very different things.

and onlive already has it working.  right after the sony acquisition i tried out rayman on gaikai and it worked smooth as butter for me.

Achievements are a useless gimmicky treat which hides a game's horrible replay value.

I only go for them if the game was fun. I realized I play games way more due to the trophies, it really helps me get a lot of bang for my buck.

Why do people think that cloud gaming will be possible next gen? Not everyone has an amazing internet connection, hell my internet craps up on me on a regular basis.

They are wise to wait and see before jumping to the wrong boat.
