Forums - Gaming - Iwata: Cloud gaming not the future

It is, albeit the distant future. Once the necessary network infrastructure is fast enough and widespread, the gaming industry as we know it is a wrap.

If he's talking about the next few years, though, then I totally agree. I don't expect much on that front as far as the PS4/720 are concerned.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

Lol Iwata. He will eat those words once Gaikai can stream 1080p games on PS4. It will become a huge part of next gen.

He also said he didn't like the current online platforms or something, thats why WiiU lacks achieve/trophy system.

Achievements are a useless gimmicky treat which hides a game's horrible replay value.

I only go for them if the game was fun. I realized I play games way more due to the trophies, it really helps me get a lot of bang for my buck.

I adored Half Life 2 but didn't want to play all over through it just to get achievements... that's the problem with those games. Once you finish them, you don't have the strenght to go back (laziness???)

Seems pretty obvious. You can't play games on a cloud, too moist and high up. Why is this news?

hahaha XD

the day cloud gaming becomes the norm is the day i will quit. I like having my consoles and physical copies of games taking up so much space in my house lol.

You and me both.

That and the fact that I'm not going to allow myself to be reliant on the 'goodwill' of a company to keep something I like alive for an indefinite period of time.

Add me to the list. No way I'm trusting a company that could go under or otherwise mess with my games, to hell with that. I want to actually OWN my games, not just access to them, which could be taken away at any moment. Not to mention the waste of internet...

This is a reason I also agree with. I hate this gen as it relies on updates and patches to get a lot of the games working. Tell me how I will get these updates in 10 years time if I ever want to relive some of these games with my kids (when they arrive lol). Oh sorry son we can't play skyrim cause the patches are no longer available.  For this reason alone I think this is why retro gaming is going up in price. Mianly cause you can plug and play and not rely on bloody updates for a game to function.

Completely agree. I miss the days when games were actually FINISHED on release instead of treating consumers like a giant mass of unpaid bug testers, and we didn't have to rely on short-lived online support.

I'm starting to like this Iwata guy.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

He will eat that words in 10yrs when more than like 5% of all households have a sufficent connection for FullHD streaming

i just saw, in relation to the house of cards release, that 25% of americans already subscribe to netflix and the number is growing. clearly the market is responding to streaming based content.  this isn't 10 years out.  it's coming this holiday and in 3-4 years time it will be a big part of the gaming industry.  in 10 years it will probably be the dominant source of money for gaming.

How do you buffer a game?  You can't.  The infrasturcture is going to need to be a lot better.  As Milkyjoe already stated, this is also going to be a ton of data for ISPs to handle.  They already have caps and are throttling users.

Where did you get that 25% from?  I'm guessing straight from Netflix with round up like that (lol).  The latest Netflix financials (Q4 2012) have 27.15 million subscribers to streaming, but only 25.47 million of those are paying customers.  With 313.9 million Americans (2012), I am guessing they are talking households.  That is at 114.8 million (2011).  So 23.6% best case, or 22.2% paying.  Close I guess.

Anyway, my point is that streaming video and streaming a game where the user has input are two very different things.

and onlive already has it working.  right after the sony acquisition i tried out rayman on gaikai and it worked smooth as butter for me.

For you.

How many people with Netflix are relying on significant buffers and/or lower quality video?  My guess would be a lot of them.
