Sony's official "shipped" numbers are about 4 million higher than VGChartz's "sold" numbers. It could mean that VGChartz has failed to track more recent sales... or it could mean that Sony is counting shippings that aren't really sales to retailers (such as shipping replacement units, for instance). The official "shipped" numbers are the basis for the claim that PS2 is still ahead.

But anyway, if the PS2 is still ahead, it's only ahead due to sales in the "other" regions, at least based on VGChartz numbers. Not sure what this means - is there really an extra ~12 million sold in the "other" regions, or is that just how VGChartz "corrected" the worldwide number?

Nintendo has released 6 home consoles, and out of those, only two were dominant. Yes, that's right. It may shock the under 21s in here to understand this, but Nintendo has lost just as much as it's won. During the DC/PS2/Xbox and Gamecube era, they were the butt of every joke. From being kiddy, to "it's a purple toy lunch box", no one cared about Gamecube. Even their games, like WW and SMS were not liked (history has been revised by the little kids at the time who are now old enough to voice their opinon online. Believe me, the cartoon Link was mocked and hated).

It was a little weird watching all the kids of the Gamecube era take to the internet, and boast about how unbeatable Nintendo was and how the Wii-U will take names, because they're "Nintendo" and thus, should never be doubted. If you thought that, you were either too young to know better, or don't know your history.

Still trying to understand what the fuck you are talking about...  So the you think the kids that grew up with the GC became cocky about Nintendo?  I'm sorry but if anything it would be my generation that grew up with the NES that would be cocky about Nintendo.  Nintendo was written off the home console industry during the GC era.  Remember most called the Wii Nintendo's last home console system?  If anyone was cocky it would be Sony fans from PS1/PS2 era to PS3 era.  Very few people were calling for a come back for Nintendo when they released the Wii.  Except me

Because some people feel that this is not the case. The weaknesses are not something solely to be fixed with games, price cuts and patches, the very console itself is designed in such as way that it misses both markets, this cannot be redeemed by any of the above.

However, it is up to anyone to measure what one would consider "reasonable sales".

The very fact that people on here try to talk about "two markets" demonstrates their complete and utter failure to understand the videogame industry and the broad spectrum of market that exists out there.

The Wii died long before the WiiU came out. Look at the sales last year around this time.

WiiU is nearly twice as cheap as PS3 was at launch.
