Forums - Gaming - GTA V development costs over $137 million, says analyst

Is anyone really surprised? RockStar's already made three titles that cost over 100mil, and GTA is their flagship series.

Phew, I'm glad it is the exception. While it is going to be a great game I wonder if anyone else could afford 0,13 BILLION dollars into the development of a single game :D

Yeah it's pretty amazing. I mean only recently did the games industry as a whole become a billion dollar industry, and R* with one game comprise 23% of it.

That is some bizzare math right there if i am understanding it right. Also gaming industry has been a billion dollar industry for a long time. It has exceeded Hollywood Box office revenue ($15 billion) some time back. It also did 19.1 billion in sales in 1990. In inflation terms that would be close to $31 billion today.

I am sorry if i misunderstood your 23% figure but i responded to best of my understanding of that comment.

The average dev cost this gen are between $20-$40 million.

Yeah, but that's still 66-83% less :D

I wonder what development costs we'll see in this gen...

The dev cost are rising at alarming speeds. Here's a very interesting article about the matter. Pretty long though.

o.O Makes you wonder if small devs will be able to develop for PS4 at all. I predict a support of the PS3 for at least another 4yrs.

$230 million / $1 billion = 23%

Real world numbers do make it bizarre. Thanks.

Well if developers and publishers don't take measures I could see next gen being the both extremes: the indie games and the AAA games. All things in the middle will "disappear". This is a worst case scenario though.

Like the article mentions at some point this devs cost are because of games trying to emulate big budget movies and some of them end of failing. If publishers stop being so greedy, then this cost shouldn't be a problem since they could stay the same (or just increase a little).

$1 billion total operating income seems rather low considering $28 billion in revenue from software sales in 2012. Oh well.

How do they know. Complete guess. Useless.

Pretty much. This is a guestimate at best, a number pulled out from someones behind. The cost could easily be under 100 million or blow past 200 million.

for comparison reasons i would really like to know the budged for a COD game now

$40-50 million. More than $200 million if you included marketing.

Sounds in line to me considering this budgets.

You have to study business to know what break even means? I surely hope not or else education has failed us greatly...
