why not 2018

Make it 2022, so Vs. XIII is a launch title. ^_^

U guys keep saying it would be giving up market share to microsoft but thats not the point. These next 3 years would be to squeeze out as much profit as possible would be able to market it better to stay relevent against wii u/nextbox. Releasing in 2016 would give it a 1-2 year lead on the following gen.

You obviously do not understand Microsofts intentions with Sonys marketshare. Sony has to look after it like a dog because if not Microsoft will try to take them out and then monopolize the industry while dumbing everything down to specific to multimedia hubs over games. Multimedia is the very reason Microsoft joined the gaming industry aside from Sonys visible stance as a threat to PC gaming in the late 90's.

Still pushing that ridiculous argument? The original Xbox and 360 were launched as gaming machines. Sony is the one that has been pushing their hardware as multimedia boxes.

I've grown an affinity towards MS this gen, but I want Sony to launch a new console this year. More competetition is good for everyone. Sony didn't realize they had competition in 2006 and they only got better to compete with MS.

1. Sony has the lowest total sales, yes, but they have the momentum right now as they consistently lead week after week in global sales.  So, yes, Sony has some momentum right now.

2. You are only looking at first party, Sony makes money off of all software sold on their systems.  You need to look at total software sells.  Basically, the strategy being debated here is the kind of strategy that would turn off third party support, or in other words the vast majority of software sells on the console.

3. Not sure what home has to do with anything, but honestly it is completely irrelevant.  It is not a feature Sony even markets or talks about anymore.  It's basically the playstation version of second life.

4. So in a thread talking about maintaining profitability, you suggest bundling the vita with the ps3?  I'm sure including a device that is sold at a loss and has little consumer interest would absolutely drive consumer interest and profit...

1. "but they have the momentum right now " Really? Take a look at the United States sales NPD, Microsoft outsold Sony over 2-1 for this past fall holiday season in the United states. So if you really want to be looking at this to the point of Momentum, its clear in the United states that is not the case. Sony is selling good but remember this is about making a long Haul sales business plan.

2. No I am looking at the fact that right now Mobile software sales for smart devices is outpacing the sales , How would that turn off 3rd party development? instead of concentrating on PC centric developer's for their 3rd party offering's Sony courts the mobile developer's instead. just look at the movement of Apple,Google with Android, and companies like Samsung with their smart TV's and those Cheap Hardware centric Consoles like the OUYA. instead of looking to compete with Microsoft courting the 3rd party publisher's Sony goes to the smart devices developer's. they already are doing just that with Playstation Mobile, now picture that for a living room type of console support, like the OUYA but SONY PLAYSTATION instead!

3. Its very Important, it provides more profit for Sony, the fact that you said its playstation version of second Life is not the case at all.

4. the PSVita was stated by  scott rohde to provide profit on day 1 SCEA, because that was talking about SCEA

what Kaz was talking abou is not all regions they would be selling for a profit on ever PSVita sold, and what consumer interest would matter if they are mainly buying it for the PS3? that's the point bundling the PSVita inside the box with the PS3 is the next plan no doubt, because look at the trends.

Nintendo, mobile handheld device with their game console

Microsoft has surface and the Microsoft SmartGlass to connect with their xbox360 and the next xbox

you do not think Sony want's to have a presence inside that paradigm? do you really think Sony is going to drop that idea when the PSVita right now has 128 MB of dedicated GPU ram for the PSVita. the Nintendo 3DS has 6 MB of dedicated GPU ram for its 268 MHz single core PICA 200 GPU. do you see Nintendo bringing out yet another Handheld in the next few year's? they already put out the 3DSXL.

Sony has a handheld device made to keep pace for developer's for the next few years for mobile development for game's. bundling it with the PS3 is pretty much alredy happened  and was sold out anyway:

http://www.geek.com/articles/games/sony-is-considering-a-ps3ps-vita-bundle-2012101/

so Say Sony waits until 2014 or 2015 to start to bundle the PSVita with the PS3 when it would be cheaper to do it!

buy a game for your PS3 take it on the go with your PS3's touch screen controller..the PSVita.

Samsung has been going at it with Sony for a while, Google...I don't even understand that reference pertaining to Sony. Microsoft has been at it with Apple for a while and Apple has been taking a chunk out of the gaming marketed for a couple years now, but that is based off of casual sales which cannot completely stopped.

"Apple has been taking a chunk out of the gaming marketed for a couple years now, but that is based off of casual sales which cannot completely stopped."

but that's just not casual anymore, take a look a publisher's like EA, rockstar they are putting more hardcore iP's on devices that many gamer's see as a non game machine or a non Hardcore gaming type of product.

that's the main problem, the device chipset's that's going into devices like smart TV's and Tablet's and Smart Phones are no longer a "weak" platform for hard core software iP's. the fact that UNITY3D works and runs very well on these mobile chipset's is not only a clear indication, but remember the Nintendo WiiU also has made a deal with UNITY 3D game engine for the WiiU.

this is more than just a Niche or a fleeting idea of what is a game console, this is about the general change in the market as a whole. you know there is going to be 4 android small game consoles that are being released for living room TV's this year alone, no telling how many are going to be made for their gaming platforms that will cost very low cost's and very heavy supported because the platform's are make one game it works on multiple systems with the same network stores are just a aplication store that you can download all your games. Also if they playstore enabled than that would make all their games  they already have be able to run on their new system. this does not even count if Apple get's into the Mix.

the Developer's are for Mobile platforms are developing for this type of hardware its being treated as a platform in of itself. by Epic for EXAMPLE by the way made full unreal game engine runs full without being striped down. and it run's very well. they are not the only one. Sony is spending more money to make Playstation a platform as a priority for development in that type of system platform.  Than trying to convince 3rd party PC centric developer's in making their games porting over to the Playstation as a 3rd tier platform , that it's already being seen as by many 3rd party publisher's anyway.

Sony is putting more effort in getting the smart devices developer's for consumer electronics products on board .

I'm not going to argue with you, I don't do the circular forum arguments, but I doubt vita is profitable.

If they wait until 2016, they might as well skip the generation and release something next-next gen. Which is exactly what they'd be doing.

Well instead of releasing,a console on a timeline that other companies want for you. Maybe  Releasing a console on your own companies time line when they feel their company is better suited to handle the support for yet another platform would be better off. The PS3 development is in full swing, so is the PSVita, many seem to think Sony's not putting development teams on PSVita project's when Sony is well known to always be slow to get their software out from their own 1st party!

I mean would we have the same questions about the PS4 asked, bunch of real non Market moving platform seller's released than notheing? for a while while 100's of web sites keep asking what will Sony to do to turn the PS4's fortune's around?

that is the thing though, there's conjecture and reading too much into it or by the words of the people in charge

Speaking to GameTrailers in a recent interview, Senior VP of SCEA Scott Rohde said that they’ll do “well” with PS Vita.

“I think that we’re going to do very well with this,” he said. “And this price point – it’s also not going to lose money for us on day one. We’re going to do well with this thing.”

he stated this on live interview! notice i stated SCEA is profit day one, where in the link you posted:

Sony Europe boss Andrew House told GamesIndustry.biz that he expected the PS Vita "business" to be profitable from the get-go. "I think as a business it will definitely be profitable from day one."

Now Kaz stated :

The company aims to make a profit on hardware sales of the new PlayStation Vita handheld in less than three years, Hirai added.

notice the other two was talking about their regions! the strong Yen already has Taken a hit on profit's.
