Forums - Nintendo - Today I was going to announce that I hate Nintendo for taking my best gaming years away from me, but then I realized I could be bi-polar

I grew up with them (33 years old), but I've come to realize that they're not the innovative (new IP, software wise) company of the 80's that I grew up with. They're selling their products to families, not hard core gamers. They're more interested in the bottom line (cheap consoles) than gaming imo. So, without hate, or anything ridiculous like that, I've moved on.

I still have my NES and 70 glorious carts that I play all the time, but those days are gone and Nintendo isn't about that anymore.

I'm pretty sure that the NES was targeted at families.

People act like this is some new thing Nintendo is trying, but Nintendo has always tried to do a mix of hardcore and casual stuff.  Kirby's Adventure, Super Mario Kart, Mario Party, Yoshi's Story, Kirby 64, etc.  It's not like Nintendo started courting casual gamers with the Wii U.

It becomes perfectly clear when you realize that the NES was basically called "Family Computer" in Japan. Nintendo wasn't trying to hide it, and honestly I don't think they should.

And it came with a toy robot.  Welp, if people will excuse me I'm going to go play Xenoblade which totally wasn't for hardcore gamers.  You know how those casuals love their complex RPGs.

Yes, because we all know 3 year olds, 45 year old mothers and 70 year old grandmothers can beat Metroid and Zelda 2.

Neither do I expect them to beat Donkey Kong Country Returns or Xenoblade Chronicles.

And 3 year olds and 45 mothers are going to have an easier time with Xenoblade, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Punch Out!!!, and Metroid Prime 3.

Derp.  This system has some hard games.  It's not for teh casuals.

@FOX:
Do you mean as Sony went behind Nintendo's back (meaning without telling them) and partnering some other company? Then yes, I would fault Sony on that. Personally, I hope that their was no fault on either side, as in telling one another openly that they would back out their deals and come to an agreenment.

Not quite. Nintendo and Sony had a licensing disagreement, as Sony would've had total control of the SNES-CD disk format and, by extension, total control over what games could be licenesed for the SNES-CD. Ever wonder why Nintendo uses proprietary disk formats instead of, say, DVD or Blu-Ray? This might have something to do with that.

I already knew about the licencing disagreement and it was rather greedy from them as it felt justified that Nintendo backed out of that deal. But were 2 ways that it could've done and Nintendo could've just just flat out said they don't want to go with it anymore in Sony's face, but no, they went the "sneak in the grass" route, wich was not very ethical/professional...

One might think so in the sense that it's unusual for a Japanese company to choose to work with a non-Japanese company over another Japanese company. But on the other hand, it's reasonable for Nintendo to shop around for better deals. Unfortunately I think they did it a bit too late in the development process.

You're missing the point. Nintendo use to make games like OOT it's primary focus. Their E3 shows were directed towards us, the core gamer. Their systems were always as powerful, or more powerful than the competition. With the Wii, their entire brand was redirected towards casuals. Wii Sports replaced Mario as the pack in, system seller. Entire E3 presentations were dedicated towards casuals (see Wii Sports Resort debacle etc.)

Nintendo, as a company, has changed. Their target audience, has changed. This is undebateable.
