Forums - Nintendo - I think the WiiU is 'doomed' because of the controller.

I've kind of kept this thought to myself because I thought someone would mention something about this sooner, but as no-one has I'll just throw my thoughts into the ring.

I think the controller was a terrible mistake. The out of the box motion controls and cheap price point have been huge factors in the Wii's success. I look at the box of the WiiU and basically see an expensive 360 now. It seems to have ditched it's low price point and unique motion controller out of the box selling point for a giant screen stuck on a traditional looking controller?

I don't know, I just really really think it was a big mistake. I think they've managed to alienate casuals with the new controller and pushed away the core with the price point that is only so high because of the controller.

I love nintendo and their games, but I think they have really shot themselves in the foot with this one :@

Hope I'm wrong obviously!

if the wii had failed, people would say the same thing.

Like the dual screens of the DS, or the motion controls of the Wii, or... the ditching of CD's for the N64, the point is, you could be right but you could be wrong we have to wait and see, nintendo hasn't put their first AAA game on the Wii U, let's se what they have and then we call it doomed, or not... patience is a virtue.

Have you seen these 'casuals' you speak of? I had a group of them at my place the other day, and despite their tiny brains and short attention spans, these strange creatures were facinated by the WiiU tablet. They poked at it with wonder until music began to play on the television, then they danced with joy and drank wine. Seemed as if their species actually was taken by it.

I think you're right that I'm calling doomed far too early. To be honest I don't really think it's doomed per say. Maybe a better way of putting my feeling is that I think the new controller is a negative factor and the WiiU will not realise the sales potential it could have had without it.

I think it is the single thing that will keep them going. Easy portability of all the popular IOS and android games along with perfect compatability for 360ps3/hardcore stile games, while at the sametime still providing a new way to expierence console games wit the two screen approach.

They went for the franken controller so EVERYONE can bring their games to the system if they want to. (NO more, "our game wouldnt really work with the wiimote excuses) "

Who is John Galt?

mmmm...no, the controller is actually the BEST part of the console

If the casuals feel alienated by this controller then I don't even know what to think.
You take the DS, you take the Wii. You duct tape them together and boom! You have the Wii U. I think this is Nintendo's best idea yet. Putting both of their best selling consoles into one whole console?! Genius. It should work...

I think I'm the only one who preferred the wiimote-nunchuck combo.

So damn comfy =O
