Maybe they overshipped in those regions. Sales for PS2 aren't strong in regions like Brasil, but they are there. PS2 sold 2.92 million units last year. |
Where are you at?
It's just that simple.

Canada?
I keep track of this stuff http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=152615&page=1# - It's post 5 where I estimate PS2 sales.

At least in my country (Brazil) it is being a while since I cannot find that PS2 available to sell on the major retailers (americanas, submarino, walmart, extra, pontofrio, casas bahia, etc). It seems that Sony stopped shipping the console here.
However, this a little bit hard to believe in it since retailers reported that it was the best selling console of 2011 here.

I'm afraid not, I'm not around long enough here on this site to have witnessed the 102 number here. Wikipedia still has the 102 number, with a source leading to an official Sony shipment report. So I guess that must be the truth. If anyone has anything else which proves VGC's 105 number, I'd love to be enlightened though
.
Nintendo should release a DS mini and give it away with Happy meals to further boost DS's sales.

Funny because DS sold just as well in Q4 in USA as it did in 2011 (A little over 1 million). DS may be dead in Japan, and dying in Europe, but in USA and Canada DS is still doing decent. It's definatly possible that the DS outsells the PS2. I mean who of us thought that PS2 would be selling until the end of the 8th generation? |
According to NPD, we had the DS overtracked for Dec. by ~86K. We may have it overtracked in EU, as well. So, it is definitely going to have to start selling at a much better rate, especially since the PS2 is still selling, to reach over 160M (the number I expect the PS2 end up at before truly being discontinued).

If PS2 is discontinued, that means they aren't shipping anymore units, and like I showed you in my link, I see no way PS2 has shipped more then 157.3 million units.
DS may be overtacked by 86k, it's been adjusted heavily the last few weeks. VGC is not the most accurate in keeping up with sales, hence this is why they stopped bothing with PS2.
I think DS can top PS2, but only if PS2 is truely discontinued, in all regions. If they still ship PS2's, then PS2 should remain king.
Thoughs on Wii surpassing PS1?

Yes, but the PS2 hasn't been discontinued. Only in Japan. And even if it had, it's going to be awhile before the DS passes even 157.3M. I'd be surprised if the DS has even passed 154M with this holiday season added in. And I wouldn't be surprised if the DS is discontinued late 2013 - early 2014.
IS Guardian the only source for this? I thought they only disconnected it in Japan? And PS2 is still selling in some developing countries, and seeing how quickly DS is slowing down , I dont think it will outsell PS2
