And of course people are going to blame it on smarthphones, ignoring that the 3DS and Vita aren't exactly the strongest handheld offerings of all time...

if you we're a dad and your kid asked you for a gaming device and you had to choose between a 200$ handheld plus 50$ for every game or a 399$ IPHONE with free games and 1$ games plus it's a phone.

What would you choose?

i would choose an iphone without even thinking about it.

The handheld.

For one, the games are more like $40. For the $400 iPhone, one could buy a handheld console plus five games (at normal price). Which is pretty much the attach-ratio for a handheld anyway. One handheld game is quality-wise 100x any mobile game. Kids aren't dumb enough to not know this. A smartphone app is fun for 10 minutes, then it never get's looked at again.

Not even mentioning the fact that on top of the $400 iPhone comes a mobile subscription, making it even more expensive than it seems. Unless you wouldn't want to use the device's main purpose; calling people. An iPad costs more like $600, so that makes the handheld's advantage even bigger.

it's not fun for you but it is for a 7yo, just face the fact's smartphones are killing the vita and 3ds even the coo of Nintendo approves my comment.

My 12 year old cousin won an iPod Touch two months ago. That means she got it for free. She played some apps for a short time, and now we're back to playing on DS again. Plus, if smartphones are killing 3DS, why is it doing as good as the DS? Would it otherwise have done even better?

EDIT: And giving your 7yo an iPhone would be wrong anyway.

Yes, smartphones and tablet are a cause of decline but I think the main cause is Sony who has shoot himself in the foot with PsVita. 3DS sales are growing, the old DS is declining but it's only natural for 8 years old hardware.

even though you're wrong, explain to me why the decline?

Use your brain, change of Generation and Vita failure simple as that.

As I said use your single brain cell.

2011 4 Handhelds 3 selling above 7m 2 are pervious Generation, 2012 those 2 pervious Generation handheld sales drop by 9 million while the Vita didn't pick really up any of the slack.

As I said in another post change of Generation and Vita flop.

Whats a brain cell?

By comparison, the DS' strongest Year on the market, it sold over 29 Million alone.

That is one handheld matching in 2008 what 4 handhelds did in 2011 and beating them in 2012. Crazy. The PSP even managed 14 Million in 2008 too, matching the 3DS of 2012.

As Microsoft is not making a dedicated handheld, this is good news for me.
