Blu-ray Hardware Sales Quickly Outpace HD-DVD

Following Warner’s decision to exclusively back the Blu-ray format, sales of standalone Blu-ray players have soared. New sales figures from the NPD group show Blu-ray taking nearly 93 percent of the market in the week ending January 12. Compare these figures to the week before Warner’s announcement, when there was a near 50-50 split between the two competing formats.

It should be noted that the above sales figures do not include sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console or the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on drive. Considering that PS3 sales have also been on the rise, things are looking great for Blu-ray.

i like pie....... charts

Proud owner of all next gen consoles and portables.

I still don't own a PS3 game

Good for Sony, I guess it payed off in the end, PS3 can only go up from here.

Looks like HD-DVD is the new Betamax! I still think that downloading will take the crown at the end!

but is it because BR sales are rising up ? or because HD DVD sales are collapsing ?

still good ...

HD-DVD is in an even worse position than Betamax was. Betamax was technologically superior to VHS, and professional grade variants, Betacam/Betacam SP, became the broadcast standard right the way up to the digital era.

HD-DVD doesn't have any advantages, so I can't really see a future for it at all. Therefore, I don't see HD-DVD as the new Betamax. I don't even see it as the new LaserDisc.

And downloading probably will take the crown in the end, but that's at least a decade away.

Exactly what I was thinking. Sure BR sales probably went up a bit, but it would probably be HD DVD sales tanking that would make up a large portion of "gain" by BR.

Even though the article says that "BR sales are soaring" without any actual numbers there is no way to confirm that one way or the other.
