Forums - Nintendo Discussion - A Golden Wii U Opportunity

I had this idea a week ago, and I can't get it out of my mind.

This is what Kitt's voice - the car from the classic Knight Rider series, and Hal 9000, the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey look like.

Now, imagine them on the screen of your GamePad - talking to you.

The GamePad offers you a 2nd Screen.  It also offers you built-in speakers capable of playing distinct sound from that of the game, or Television.

Now let's put those together and give your GamePad a voice, an identity.  I'm not saying I want Nintendo to provide a full-blown voice-recognition system to enable full-blown conversations.  That can be the GamePad in about 3-5 years.

But do you know how cool it would be if, as I'm playing a game, or simply using any of the Wii U's features, Kitt...or Morgan Freeman's voice...Sean Connery...James Earl Jones, were giving me notifications, telling me things, commenting on my play???

Imagine you see a Wii U commercial on T.V.  And all you see - is the GamePad, with the eye from Hal 9000, and it's talking to you.  The way I'm envisioning it, this would be the one, killer-app, that single-handedly sells the console to the masses.

Hey Indie Dev's - if you happen to read this, get crackin', you'll make millions. You're welcome.

Tried to fix the pictures, hopefully they work now.

That's actually a great idea...
-Sir, i think you should lvl up your armor skill
--why? they aren't even hurting me
-But soon, stronger enemies will appear and you won't be able to fight even small groups at once
--listen, you are just a gamepad, i've been a gamer for a long time, i know what i'm doing
-Sure, like at the castle's exit where you got surrounded and died?
--(...)
-Or how about the plains? where you let your partner die because you where running like a chicken
--Shut up...
-I'm connected to the wall plug, i can keep going all night

Cool so I'm not alone.  Thanks for replying.

Since actual conversations with an intelligent AI aren't in the cards right this minute,  I would settle for just a Knight Rider App that Dev's can plug into games, which either is just a voice coming from the GamePad, or the voice + image on screen, that says hilarious/helpful things as I go.  Making fun of my mistakes, dropping hints, singing praises, and asking questions allowing me to choose touch-screen answers.

Could be used in different ways for non-gaming functions / features of the Wii U, like simply reading me friend replies, or telling me that there is one to check out.

But man, just seeing that retro Kitt Voice or Hal 9000 eye on the Pad screen, talking to you through the Pad speakers as you're holding it, would give a whole new life to the controller and the Wii U.

Even the most simple thing like a voice telling you the tutorial steps would be an awesome feeling, if they can take it further than that i think it holds great possibilities.

Very cool idea! But I think it would work even better in a game!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

"Now, imagine them on the screen of your GamePad - talking to you"
Okay, you had me already by this point!

Would be great to develop a new type of co-op games: you and a virtual player tagging along.

There you go - voice tutorial, a total no-brainer!

One things clear, Nintendo is drastically under-utilizing the GamePad's speakers.  Just giving it a voice adds an entire new dimension, it makes it come alive.

Somebody send this to Reggie or Shigeru asap.

Actually in ZombiU the Prepper is talkig to you via the Gamepad. That also means, you only hear him on the Gamepad-speakers, while other sounds come from the TV. He does not comment on much, at some places he drops a comment, aside from that it's more his instructions. But I could think that a future game might extend on it and the gamepad is talking more to you. Like Kid Icarus:Uprising, that consisted of nearly constant talk.
