Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Nintendo be Releasing a New Home Console in the Next 2 to 3 Years?

EdHieron said:

If you look at the history of Nintendo and their consoles, you see that they tend to release new consoles that lag behind in technology, them release newer consoles only a few  years down the road ( see Gameboy Color, followed by Gameboy Advance, then DS all coming out roughly in the space of five years).

Wrong.  I saw your "responses" to others who said you were wrong, but those tended to release BEFORE the more powerful systems.  Not only that, but the gap in power wasn't that big at all.

This console gen they discovered that a new console aimed at the right audience ( largely nongamers) and at the right price can become a fad and make them a lot of profit in the short run but be doomed to failure in the long run.  See Wii's position in the marketplace the last two years since it simply didn't have the hardware to compete with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3.

Wrong again.  They discovered pricing was crucial a long time ago.

More than likely we will see a similar situation occurring in the next two years when Sony and Microsoft release their new consoles.  Wii U ( which has already shown that it doesn't have the same level of demand that the Wii and 360 had at their launches) can conceivably do well against Microsoft and Sony's upcoming consoles in its first year as it will be getting by on ports from the 360 and PS3 during the short term whereas Microsoft and Sony's next consoles' lineups may not be all that impressive at launch.  However by the Second Christmas for the follow ups to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 all the True flashiest and most anticipated next gen games will be launching for 720 and PS4 and the vast majority of them will be far superior to any Wii U versions in much the same way that 360 and PS3 versions were to their Wii counterparts (the few that were released).  Yet with more consumer friendly pricepoints for their new consoles than their predecessors had in addition to still maintaining the power to make Wii U look as obsolete as 360 and PS3 made the Wii look, market penetration of the 720 and PS4 will be much more rapid than it was for 360 and PS3.

Wrong.  The "PS4" and "720" will 100% NOT be the same difference as Wii and PS3/360.  It isn't just because of price, but because of how inconvenient it would be for developers, power efficiency/consumption, etc.  it just wouldn't be practical at all.

In effect, Christmas 2014 will be in favor of 720 and PS4 versus Wii U just as much as Christmases 2011 and 2012 were for 360 and PS3 versus Wii.

What do you even mean by that?  I don't really think so, however there's not much to go on for it.  However, if the sales DO end up being like that, it definitely wont be for the reasons you listed.

So, do you expect Nintendo to launch the successor to Wii U in 2015?

Technically to be honest though you can make the argument the GameCube and Wii really only had about 3-4 years of support from Nintendo. They basically ditched the GameCube by early 2005 and Wii has been a grave yard for the last 18 months.

One Zelda game (or the promise of a Zelda game) doesn't constitute far reaching software support.

The reason why they couldn't launch successors is because Nintendo doesn't have the software development resources to launch a new hardware platform with a snap of a finger, especially now that they commit so much of their resources to the handheld side.

But really if Nintendo could have had software ready (meaning they had adequate amount of dev resources), I think they would have released the Wii U in fall 2011, perhaps even sooner.

wii had a 3 year lifecycle but after the big succes it lived longer...

I dunno, the WiiU won't fall below 100k before the last full week of February? I just don't see it, I'm afraid.

(And please cut down this quote tree as I cant on my phone!)

Sounds good. What would the bet be?

How about what I said above, with the winner getting 1 month Sig control and/or 1 week avatar control?

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

That one is accepted, when it comes to sig control. As for avatars, I won't be downloading any files on my computer from unreliable sources.

The demand for Wiiu has been much higher than the 360 at launch.

I really can't see how that can be the case.  The 360 was completely unavailable in most areas of the US until the Spring of 06, and it was selling for a couple of hundred dollars at least over its retail price on ebay.  Wii U is available in about any store you walk into and it's selling for $25 to $50 less than its retail price on ebay.

or it could just be that theirs is plenty of stock for the wii u. nintendo stated they did not want to repeat the shortages of the wii. look up super chunks thread on the wii u launch vs other launches. maybe after ms had sold less than 30 mil of the original xbox they didnt expect to pick up as quick and didnt ship enough.

all we know for certain is that the wii u is currently selling faster than the xbox 360 did in the same time period.
