No. It's not an imaginary race. The market isn't made like this. Only fanboys see it this way: Winning a console generation.
As long as a product sells, and is bringing profit, it is winning. If the other manufacturers don't have a lasting faith in their product and believe they need to remove it from the market, it changes nothing. Fact being that the older product is still being proposed to people, still selling, still generating profit, and in many cases, selling in place of the newer gen systems.

You see it like a console generation is the be all end all of a console's life-cycle. The general population doesn't see things this way. "Hardcore gamers", for lack of better words, see things in such a shallow way.

After all 3 consoles come out, the only market left for the older consoles is casuals, kids getting a cheap first console, and the odd core gamer that missed out the entire generation. Also 3rd world gaming markets. These all dont pertain to us, who made our console choices allready.

The general population doesnt frequent gaming forums. Core gamers frequent them.Your using causals as a crutch, your dealing in core gamers, who as you said, see things in a shallow way. Play by our rules because thats where you are.

No, by "hardcore gamers", I meant the people who actively seek info on the internet about the ins and outs of the industry. Most people I know are gamers. They're often really good at it and competitive. But barely any of them are aware of the industry's workings.

You don't need to be a fanatic to be a core gamer.

Actually I would say you are using the forums as your crutch to attempt to mold things into your own personal world view.

We work in the real world. Forums exist on the internet, which was created by people in the real world. Discussions in the there are about consoles that sell, in the real world. They sell based on demand, in the real world. Sales continue because of quality software created and released on them, in the real world. Everything pertaining to whether or not a console keeps chugging along or fizzles out is a product of consumer demand and developer support which exists in, wait for it...

The real world.

Real world rules always apply over made up rules that have no other purpose than to say "Ha! It ends now because I said so, PS3 finished in last place!".

Real world will see it differently, which is why your whole notion of "Play by our rules" is quite silly.

@Bolded

That should also say "Sales2099's rules" because by looking at this thread and those of us who have been here long before you have, we clearly don't consider those to be "our rules".

Considering most of the allegaiances in this thread pertain to Sony, id imagine you dont share those kinds of rules.

I just cant understand how you still think PS3 and 360 and Wii are relevant when the spotlight is taken off them and focused on the 3 next gen consoles. It applies to all tech or cars or whatever industry. Whoever cares about what the old tech does or doesnt do are stuck in the past and are just as fanatical in their own way, because you feel the need to hang on to the past to get something out of it.

What does that mean? That the Sony fans play by the rules of the real world? That's a good thing and not just that, but if we are to believe that Sony fans are the majority in these forums, well, then the real world rules are our rules on the forums.

Either way, I don't let console allegiances cloud my view of how the world really works. Whether it be when I was called a Nintendo fan, a Microsoft fan or a Sony fan. I expect to soon be called an iOS fan, although I think that may have happened already in one of the iOS vs Android threads where I was comparing the 4S to the Galaxy S3 because I own both of them.

In the end, Jimmy Danger said it right. Xbox has grown as a brand greatly since last gen with install base, 3rd party support, and profitability. The Playstation brand has been on decline to put it lightly. But the Wii is the overall winner.

I personally consider 360 being 2nd or the #1 HD console in the time period where all 3 consoles were the most current and relevant a major victory and milestone. Thats 7 years of beating the former #1 brand in gaming.

PS3 can have all the longevity it wants, and the fans have a right to celebrate any milestone it gets. But if all 3 next gen consoles are out, I personally would have moved on and couldnt care less what happens to the older consoles. No matter how you slice it, the spotlight is taken off when all 3 next consoles release.

So as I said before, to celebrate taking 2nd, after 7 years, after the next gen fully releases, all the while with Wii being #1 and the only winner to be remembered by history, to celebrate 2nd is to celebrate lowering the bar. With the OP, it wouldnt matter a damn bit.

Your opinion bears no relevance.

I garee

MS fans like me congratulating a console for coming in first place in 2 of the 3 biggest single markets whilst the curent gen is still alive is silly.

The PS3 coming 2nd overall after the next xbox and Wii are released is a far bigger deal.

... if you are desparate.

So what you're saying is that, if the 360 passes the Wii after the Wii U came out in 2 of the three biggest single markets that matters, but if the PS3 passed the 360 overall after the next Xbox comes out that doesn't matter at all.

Those two scenarios sound exactly the same to me, passing a console that's already had it's successor release.  Only argument I could maybe see is that getting first place in two of the three biggest single markets is more important than being second overall, which is plausible but is up for debate and certainly isn't as obvious as you try to make it seem.

But To your second line I say, whos gonna care except the zealots who pay extra close attention....people that just CRAVE the opportunity to claim some sort of victory reminisent of the glory days of PS2?

Because im telling you it wont matter in a years time. The gamers will move on. Only desperate PS3 fans will care. It taking 2nd, not 1st, 7 years too late.

And why did it matter until now? Why does it matter if MS or Sony take 2nd place behind Nintendo? Or why does it matter if any console is in a certain position compared to the others?

What does it really matter, in the end, except for the zealots who pay extra attention?

What does it matter to YOU who's so hell bent on putting a negative spin on everything Sony related?

Overall, in response to the OP, any milestone made by any of the current consoles won't matter in a years time. Nothing. Just that select group of zealots will care, and their cries will fall on deaf ears I assure you.

Its about putting people in their place. I have never seen a 3rd place faction act so cocky and triumphant, a total oxymoron if I ever saw one. Claim a personal victory, but Im saying its meaningfullness will fall on deaf ears to the Nintendo and MS camps.

This whole thing affects you more than it does the Sony fans. It's quite ironic, actually.
