Overall, in response to the OP, any milestone made by any of the current consoles won't matter in a years time. Nothing. Just that select group of zealots will care, and their cries will fall on deaf ears I assure you.

Its about putting people in their place. I have never seen a 3rd place faction act so cocky and triumphant, a total oxymoron if I ever saw one. Claim a personal victory, but Im saying its meaningfullness will fall on deaf ears to the Nintendo and MS camps.

Facts are not subject to interpretation, when the PS3 passes the 360, it will make history as the second best selling home console of this generation. No amount of spin can change this.

No one really *cares* other than to acknowledge the final tally. It is what it is. So far as everyone should be concerned, the Wii dominated, the HD-twins tied this gen and the 360 ate up a ton of market share from sony.

Fair enough. That is an agreeable response.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Hahaha, yippy, another thread where sales2099 desperately and in vein tries to claim that when the PS3 overtakes the 360 that some how "it doesn't count" because the arbitrary rules he makes up for when a consoles sales "stop counting" are more important than the actual FACTS of which console sells the most in the real word. How many times has he tried to do this in threads this year? 6, 7, 8 times? *facepalm*

2nd place authority allows me to make these rules. 3rd place fans cant make the rules, as defined by the PS2 forefathers of yestergen.

Nope.

It will be interesting to see which console sales emerge on top for 2013. Can xbox360 and PS3 continue to outsell WiiU through the year-end? - that would be a game changer, leaving Nintendo to rely perhaps too much on 3DS for profitability, as last year it made its first loss.

I think it is probable for one or both of the HD twins to outsell Wii U next year.

In the end, Jimmy Danger said it right. Xbox has grown as a brand greatly since last gen with install base, 3rd party support, and profitability. The Playstation brand has been on decline to put it lightly. But the Wii is the overall winner.

I personally consider 360 being 2nd or the #1 HD console in the time period where all 3 consoles were the most current and relevant a major victory and milestone. Thats 7 years of beating the former #1 brand in gaming.

PS3 can have all the longevity it wants, and the fans have a right to celebrate any milestone it gets. But if all 3 next gen consoles are out, I personally would have moved on and couldnt care less what happens to the older consoles. No matter how you slice it, the spotlight is taken off when all 3 next consoles release.

So as I said before, to celebrate taking 2nd, after 7 years, after the next gen fully releases, all the while with Wii being #1 and the only winner to be remembered by history, to celebrate 2nd is to celebrate lowering the bar. With the OP, it wouldnt matter a damn bit.

Your opinion bears no relevance.

Final sales are facts, not subject to interpretation or opinion.

If I score the match winning goal after my friends have all given up and started leaving the field does it still count? If you're jumping for joy and everyone else is rolling their eyes it isn't quite the same.

Tease.

(to rephrase my metaphor from before with your football metaphor)

Well - if there's one player left on the field - it counts. At least there's a one-on-one before you bang that goal in the back of the net.

But if you're on the field by yourself. It's nothing.

At this point - 1/3 of the players have packed up victorious, been promoted to the next division - and gone to another stadium (Wii/WiiU) - and MS and Sony are seeking a consolation goal.

Once we get to the point when there's one player left on the field - then it's keepy uppy with yourself. There's no race with one horse. We call that dressage. Or maybe steeplechase if it's a bit bumpy.

So basically - if MS or Sony move on to the next gen/new stadium - whoever's left is playing with themselves.

If MS or Sony outsell the Wii (or each other) , when they're the only player on the field  - it's onanism plain and simple, and even more so in the eyes of the general public. They see 2 out of three out there with shiny new tech - and one player still kicking around in old boots. An unless that player was top scorer for the game (ie. SNES when Sega/Sony moved on, Sony PS1/PS2 when Sega hads moved on) - the hardcore fans - as well as the casual fans who might attend a match when there's cheap tickets going - just look and go - "gee he must be trying to make up for what a bad game he had".

TLDR - When there's 2/3 players left - it's still game on. When there's only one left - it's game over. And unless that one player had "won" before the other two left - (like NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 - all previous matchwinners) - well - he's not only a loser - he's a loser who can't move on. If Sony grab 2nd spot then get their new hardware out before MS - it'll be MS in that position. And if MS keep 2nd spot by the time their new hardware is out - it'll be Sony.

MS fans like me congratulating a console for coming in first place in 2 of the 3 biggest single markets whilst the curent gen is still alive is silly.

The PS3 coming 2nd overall after the next xbox and Wii are released is a far bigger deal.

... if you are desparate.

So what you're saying is that, if the 360 passes the Wii after the Wii U came out in 2 of the three biggest single markets that matters, but if the PS3 passed the 360 overall after the next Xbox comes out that doesn't matter at all.

Those two scenarios sound exactly the same to me, passing a console that's already had it's successor release.  Only argument I could maybe see is that getting first place in two of the three biggest single markets is more important than being second overall, which is plausible but is up for debate and certainly isn't as obvious as you try to make it seem.

I would imagine that the more important factor is that the US, Canada and UK are home to some of the best developers in the world so being ahead in those regions is important in swaying them to your console.  I'm not discounting there are other countries with a good reputation too though .   Just food for thought in why not just the fact theyre the biggest regions is necessarily important.

I don't see that being probable but there is a chance obviously.

Also, I think MS fans don't like this for two reasons. One, it means MS couldn't beat Sony, even with all the horrible mistakes Sony made early on (pricing, 1-1 1/2 years late, and no real SW support for a year or two). And two, it shows just how strong the PS brand is. That they could have so much working against them at the start and still place 2nd and end up selling ~90M. This is only going to help them next gen, especially in EU and Japan. They will also have a console that is relatively the same price as the NeXbox and will be coming out within 6 months of the NeXbox's launch.

Well of course MS fanboys will be a little dissapointed but they've been expecting it to happen for years since PS fanboys talk about it all the time.

And you're acting like Microsoft made no mistakes. RROD was a gigantic mistake, and probably the biggest one made by any console maker this generation.

The PS brand is strong, and was VERY strong when the PS3 launched, and that has helped the PS3 a lot. But now, the PS brand is much weaker then what it was 7 years ago.

You really shouldn't just throw around the word fanboy like that.  Anyway, yes, RROD was a big mistake.  However, luckily for MS, other than the 1B it cost them in repairs, it was mostly swept under the rug.  I'm guessing that was helped by the fact that their biggest market was America.  There were countless posts and videos of people saying "No big deal, they fix it for free" or "That's what you get for buying the low-end model" or, and this is my favorite, "Just buy a new one." Don't get me wrong, they won't be able to survive that twice.  But, I suppose the late launch of the PS3, as well as it costing $200 more, allowed the majority of people to ignore RROD.

Also, the PS brand is just as strong.  Yes, the PS3 will only come close to matching the PS1's numbers, but that was mostly due to its rocky start.  I imagine next gen we should see the PS brand in full spirits, again.

No offense man but you're delusional.

Sony has given no indication whatsoever that they have learned from their mistakes and the Vita is living proof of this.

Microsoft market share went up dramatically, whereas Sony's dropped dramatically. What saved the PS brand from complete disaster this gen was it's strong brand awareness from the PS2 era. Sony can no longer count with blind adoption outside of Europe and Japan. Microsoft threat is real now and they have already won NA with the X720 before it even launches, Europe dominance is the next logical step and a real possibility now.
