Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox 720 in beta; AMD HD 8000M to power next-gen consoles?

First off, why are we assuming that consoles will be using the "mobile" versions of these CPU/GPUs? I think people are reading way too far into that one image where AMD was simply stating their technology is used in consoles (which it already is, not even counting next gen).

Just for comparison - the AMD HD7870 2GB card has a max power draw of only 144W. Average is around 60-80W and the non-gaming wattage was 6-30W total.

I will respond with more once I do some more research on the upcoming AMD technologies for both mobile/desktop.

I have argued many times that it is more likely that Nintendo and/or Microsoft would have GPUs with similar performance to a laptop GPU than something from the desktop side of things; and it is likely that Nintendo has a GPU between 500 GFLOPs and 750 GFLOPs of processing power, while it is likely Microsoft will have a GPU with between 1TFLOP and 2TFLOPs of processing power.

The actual chip Microsoft chooses will largely depend on what price range they want to target at release and whether they want to bundle Kinect (or something) with the system. If they're targeting $300 unbundled I could see a 1TFLOP GPU, and if they're targeting $500 bundled I cold see a 2TFLOP GPU.

It seems that WiiU, when fab and die size is taken into account, has between 352 and 528 GFLOPS (320 to 480 shaders@550MHz). Initial NextBox rumours were some 6x as 360, later rumours are 8x 360, which would be 1440 and 1920 GFLOPS respectively, if they took GFLOPS as comparison (that would be 7770 GHz Edition and 7870/7970m@750).

Power constraints would mean that a 7950/7970 derevative would be unlikely. But then the Xbox 360 was based on the following generation's GPU from ATI which hadn't been released at the time.

So, power requirements Vs performance will be lowered as per standard for all GPUs over generations.

My bet's on a cut down 8xxxx desktop design.

Mobile chips are aimed at the seriously power starved laptop platform, the next Xbox 360 and PS will easily be able to handle a TDP of 125W for the graphics card. Going for a mobile derevative simply isn't needed.

Oh, I agree, max I can see fit into NextBox from 7xxx gen is 7970m (which is mobile, downclocked 7870, not Tahiti). But, if those figures for 88xx desktop parts are true, 130W for 8850, card with 1536:96:32 config, I wonder what TDP its mobile part would have (for example, 7870 is 175W card, and its mobile version, 7970m, is rated at 75-90W, depending on the source).

But, honestly, I somehow doubt GCN2 is that more effective - recently released 7870LE, which should probably be called 7930, cause it's based on Tahiti, has TDP of 185W and exact same config that supposed 8850 has - 1536:96:32, which supposedly has TDP of 130W. Maybe AMD pulled some miracle, but I guess we'll have to wait bit more and see if those leaks were true.

Additionally, recent rumors have suggested that Microsoft could debut the “Xbox 720”, “Xbox 3” or whatever you want to call prior to E3 2013 at a dedicated event during the early months of 2013.
