well it is smart.... lets face it most people were bound to complain one way or the other it is Microsoft we are talking about it's been in that position of number one evil company for 20+ years.... everybody will wait for SP1... so they expect people to start pick it up next year especially once their global strategy (xbox 720, win 8, wp8, win Rt, win TV) will be more defined in the public mind.... within 2 years it will be starting take a lot of shares and their product will be way more polished by then.... looking at how MS is pictured and how they do things it makes perfect sense... and I tell you what lets meet in 2 years time and talk back about it.... i'll bet you the numbers will be in favor of ballmer and the top management...
MS is a big ship to move but it is a humongous battleship with war experience and a well thought, over a long period of time, battle plan....

So what do you think Microsoft has done this year with Windows 8, Surface and Windows Phone 8?  With Office Web Apps, Skydrive and Xbox Music?

The response from tech bloggers and vocal people?  "It's too different looking, I want the desktop and start menu, Surface isn't a laptop, it doesn't have 400k apps at launch, MS gets viruses, I'll just stick with iOS, Android and W7 because I DON'T WANT GROWTH AND INNOVATION" etc, etc, etc ...

Microsoft is forcing potty training right now.  Many want to still poop in and pee in their diapers but MS knows where the future is and is willing to go through this period where people will fight tooth and nail to stay in diapers for the sake of getting to that future.  

For the record, though, I still haven't upgraded.  I've never upgraded an OS, just bought new computers.  As people do that, sales will increase.  But it sure makes great headlines now, right?  : |

You're absolutely right. If Microsoft continues to use this strategy, then it will stagnate and perhaps, even go backwards. This strategy may also affect Microsoft's other products such as the Next-Box and its other software products. I will give Microsoft credit for finally breaking the "every other Windows OS is crappy" trend, though.

We aren't toddlers and we don't need to be forced by MS to do it, and not even MS can know the future or whether anybody will find better evolutions for it. BTW "better evolution" in a GUI is a totally subjective thing.

OTOH you're right that people will buy it anyway on new PCs, but the true threat for Windows on PC isn't temporary unacceptance of the new version, that always happens, but that its market start being colonised (or remaining the same and even still growing, but being marginalised) by desktop and portable devices derived from smartphone and tablet tech, where Windows is a dwarf, two competing OS' are the leaders and even Blackberry beats it.

They are trying to push forth a new business model. With the success of touch screens and tablets they wanted to make a Windows that could serve both markets. They also are trying to close up their OS so they can control their service offerings. The whole living room push is involved in this too. I am interested in W8 because of the improvements but since I abhor metro and the way they integrated it I am going to go with Windows 7.

Oh and they are probably trying to use Windows 8 as a way to increase their game offerings...and in turn their subscription services. Like how they tried with Games for Windows Live. Except them to bark up that tree again.


You do realize that you can (kind of) turn Metro off, right? I have done that and I'm always in the desktop mode. I even use a program called Classic Shell and I have the Start (Windows Pearl from Win7) on the bottom left corner of my laptop screen. So really, it is not a big deal. I'd say my computer runs much better on Win8. Even my online game runs better.

Microsoft in trying to be more like Apple, completely fucked up on the key part that OSX is still just OSX and iOS is just iOS. They made it so Windows 8 is a touch based OS instead of giving people the option of the older style GUI and gave us a gimped version of the desktop GUI with it that works like shit unless you spend the time to mod it. I have no idea how they even came to that conclusion in which that it might be a good idea, so I'm just going to say that Steve Ballmer is a fucking retard and he needs to GTFO of MS. I'm looking forward to Windows 9 where they fix the dumb shit decisions, if not, I'd be a sad sad person.

How the hell is then microsoft trying to be Apple if Apple implements two seperate OS and Windows one ?

I like the way the Metro UI can scale from very small 4" screens all the way up to my 53" Sony and still look/work well. Windows 8 is a pretty cool OS and if you hate the way it looks you can do what people have always done and skin it.

Did you know that you could just minimize the metro UI and then it takes you back to Windows 7? You seem to talk a lot but not knowing much.
