Forums - Gaming - The old adage that Xbox 360 Exclusives Sell So Much Better than Playstation 3 Exclusives is a Myth!

Sorry guys I did the wrong math.. 1.2 million oh shelves... not 2.2 million lol.

lol we all know PS3 has more retail offerings per year then 360. I can own up to that, but you still insist that XBLA gets more critically acclaimed games per year over PSN. Hell my 2012 360/PS3 thread shows this. Many of 360s list is comprised of XBLA games.

I honestly thought we were talking about exclusive sales here, which is why I asked where he got his info. Guess  I was wrong.

Ugh....thats right. Your the one guy who still believes in a strict exclusive, not the more progressive PS3 games not on 360 and vise versa. But im sure if I were to dig through metacritic this whole generation, XBLA really does trump PSN per year.

But thats ok, because PS3 releases more retail games per year then 360. Lets just agree on that shall we?

No, no, no, disregard the exclusive word there. Emphasis was on sales, but you talked about XBLA getting more critically acclaimed games per year than PSN. I was questioning where he got his sales numbers from (because I'm pretty sure he doesn't have them...)

Sales? Then Minecraft and Trials Evolution alone make 2012 a XBLA win. With downloabale titles, if no 1 million sold achievement PR statement is made, you can just assume it sold less then 1 million, most likely below 500k. Journey is prob the sole exception which is close to a million.

How do we know halo has 500k?  I'm not even sure how much was announced to be shipped for GT5.  But I do want to point out that GT5 has a lot of bundles as well as many different versions of GT5 so it may have a lot of stock laying around.  2.2 mil does sound like a lot though.

Anyways I just wanted to clear that up because I was not completely sure on the topic.

As far as Sales2099, what he is saying isnt wrong.  From a business's perspective Forza has been more successful this gen.  I dont like the logic he is using because it seems unfair but he isnt wrong either.

Anyways this thread has gotten way off track now.  I think most people were just trying to point the OP into the right direction.  Nobody should mention Forza and GT next to each other because that will be a storm of arguments haha

From a business's perspective GT5 give a lot more revenue and profit for Sony than all Forza's combined this gen to Microsoft.

- GT5 (GT5:P included) have a dev cost of $60 million... sold near 15 million units.
- Forza serires have dev cost of 4 games... sold near 15 million units.

You can say the dev cost of four Forza games is below $60 million and I will call bullshit... more the most Forza sales came from Forza 3 with absolute heavly bundles... so no revenue in these cases... Sony refuses to heavy bundle GT5.

About the GT5 sales...

GT5 shipped (PD): 9,180k
GT5 sales (VGC): 7,906k

~2.2 million on shelves

About Halo I will not enter in this question because my point is about Gran Turismo but the MS said Halo reach 50 million sales in the first week of December... VGC show over 50 million sold.

Is that the numbers?  That seems wrong.  I dont want to look it up, me being lazy.  Anyways assuming you are telling the truth then that is fine but I wouldnt say anything about bundles when Gran Turismo is probably the mot bundled game along with uncharted for PS3.

Also GT does not sell for 60$ through the majority of its lifespan.  This is why I dont like using Sales2099's method nor do I agree because there is too many unknown variables.  Im just stating that he isnt wrong in what he is asaying either.  I dont agree with either one of you guys to be completely honest.

From the data we know, both comanies has done good for themselves.  Forza has multiple games and GT has multiple games.  If Im correct 4 vs 3.  Side by side I would think GT would come out on top with games sold, but revenue I would think it is rather close but we also cant prove that.  As I said earlier Forza has turned into a quality competitor but GT has the bigger name, but both of you guys should only use things that are absolutely for sure in your arguments.

Said it above, but its typical to have a 800k - million on shelves globally if your a popular game.

So really, 200-500k undertracked. Thats really not a big statistic to use as a crutch....

My math was wrong... 1.2 million... not 2.2 million... sorry.

GT5 sold ~5 million copies at $60 (or near that... some places give $5 deal)... aftet that more ~2 miillion copies at $40 (maybe a little less with deals)... and now ~500k at $20 (1$10 in Black Friday).

You said 3 games because GT PSP and GT5:P? Yeah... this gen three games but the GT5:P and GT5 is just one development... it's the same game released in diferent times of development.

I'm just saying your guys arguments are completely different.  He is talking about profit and the entire gen and you seem to be focusing on games shipped.  We dont know how much Forza has shipped either?  We only know sold. Just like we dont know how much each game has earned in profits.  We also dont know how much DLC has sold etc.  These arguments could go on all day because neither one of you all can prove what you are saying.  That is why I said he isn't entirely wrong because as an IP Forza has sold about as much as GT this gen.  That doesn't diminish how well GT has done, I mean Im sure anybody can see that GT has the bigger brand name.  But it does show that Forza has held its own ground and has become a very popular series.

We really need to stop talking about bundles on this site.

EDIT: And no need on apologize, honest mistake :)  But 1.2m is believable.  It may be undertracked by 200-400K though, but that isnt too bad.  Im sure a lot of games on this site is undertracked by a little bit.

I don't like to compare these two franchises... I don't do that here but I have to anwser when somebody do that kind of comparison... in fact I don't know how much Forza sold and I don't care but I have all data you need for GT5.

For DLC the last official data is over 1 million at Nov 20th, 2011... the first DLC was release in Oct 25, 2011... so just one month of sales.

I'm more confused as to how it's an old adage. While in general it is a truth, it isn't as if it is something said for a long time.

The generalization is that an Xbox 360 exclusive, in the same year, sells better than PS3 exclusives in the same year. There isn't a single year, that I'm aware of, where a PS3 exclusive sold better than an Xbox 360 exclusive.

No one, that I'm aware of, would go so far as to say that the PS3 doesn't sell games. That's a bit extreme. That being said, Xbox 360 games, even if you eliminate the units sold on PC or PS3 where exclusives become or are multi-platform, sell better on the Xbox 360.

This generalization as applied to third-party multi-platform titles applies just as well. The majority of third-party multi-platform titles sell better on the Xbox 360 than they do on the PS3. The exception to this is FIFA, Batman, and there's one more series, but I can't remember it.

If you own a PS3, what does it matter? If you like a game, why does it matter if it sold more or less than the same game on a different platform? It doesn't. Sure, it's a notch in Microsoft's belt that in general they sell more games per console than their competitors, and it's fodder for developers to consider, but I don't get why it's such a big deal to gamers.

The PS3 is going to, at times, sell exclusive games better than the Xbox 360 will. Likewise it'll sell third-party games better than the Xbox 360 will. If people haven't figured out by now that the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are essentially equals, than you need help. If you're more interested in waging console wars when the two can go tit-for-tat with each other, than you seriously need help.

When did this become about profits and revenue? I thought this thread was about how much an exclusive can sell on the consoles?

Forza can sell about 5 million.

While Gran Turismo can sell about 10 million.

Case closed.

You know how it is, mention Forza and GT and people will argue.
