Forums - Gaming - Xbox 720 & PS4 codenames revealed, Microsoft’s ‘Oban’ chip still delayed – rumour

Sony releasing the PS4 in early 2014 sounds good to me. If they get it out by late 2013 it will be only Japan and maybe America - Sony consoles need to get pushed back in Europe, it's a tradition Late 2014 is a bit unrealistic, why should they release it that late (other than manufacturing problems, obviously)? Here's hope they have learned their lesson from the PS3 launch and use their experience to make the launch and transition period as smooth as possible, without huge losses on hardware.

Sounds like Microsoft planned a mid 2013 release at some stage but had to realize they wouldn't make that date. Of all the 3 manufacturers I'm most interested to know which direction Microsoft will be heading at in the future. They have the chance to dominate the gaming industry, at least in the west. But they just might go the multimedia route and concentrate somewhat less on games so I'm really curious to know whether they'll use their chance. Financially they are in the best position of the big 3 and surely the most powerful player when it comes to sheer muscles.

Hardware is just about motherboards?

Once again... I'm talking about build quality, user experience.  The current PS3 is frankly pretty cheap, cheap plastics and some flimsy mechanisms. Not a criticism, just an observation.

the motherboard design was the main reason behind RROD. so 2008 is the significant year in 360's life

And what you talking about "build quality, user experience" is subjctive airtalk. the current PS3 could be made out of cupboard for all I care.

Does it break, over heat, scratch your discs, make noise, burn or demand more power ? No.

The lure is just too good that you just come back.

Blatant lie.

All the gaming media were reporting was how awesome MS was with their warranty and tried to make it sound like the competiton had similar problems with the so called YOLD.

What? The 360 got its fair share of bashing from the American Gaming Media due to the RROD, so enough with the lies.

Apparently not enough :/

WOW the Sony fans seem to be rampant today spitting vitriol at every turn, but lets be serious do you guys really want to have a conversation about failures as a company this Gen? BTW I wasn't aware that the PS3 was perfectly built in fact I remember the infamous YLOD, the only reason Sony got away with it was because they didn't start selling well until new iterations of the console was available and they were able to fix that problem. But since we are talking about failures ill start Ps3 loss billions, Vita.... well you know. (discuss)

Ok, I'll bite.

-YLOD was in no way comprable to the RROD. Not even close.
-Yes PS3 did lose billions, but then again so did the Xbox 360. More than $1 billion to cover the RROD repairs. Then there's all the money they lost on 360 in its first few years since it was sold at a loss. Both are losers in this case.
-Vita is having a very tough time taking off. Same thing happened with the 3DS but Nintendo was selling it at loss so they took the price cut plunge. It's not an option for Sony yet. 3DS is having a pretty tough time in the West at the moment..But why are we talking abou this? This is completely off-topic.

This site also says (same guy) that there is no multiple models of Xbox / Xbox TV like the other rumours. So if we see that then we can prove this is false and vice versa.

lol why are people comparing RROD to YLOD? the YLOD was rare whereas every 360 was doomed to RROD in its first year of release. i know people that had to go through 3 360's in 3 months. so yea, lets forget about that and just blame sony. sony are always at fault.

It isn't just rrod 360 had though. That was just the most well known problem because it caused the system to brick. There were all sorts of faults I noted in early shipments. Faulty hard drives, scratching discs, random screeching sounds coming from games like pdz, but the weirdest one I saw was when hitman was inserted and 'error' would come up saying 'please insert this disc into an xbox 360'. lol what does it think it is?

My brother had a saints row disc which was craked in the middle. No idea how that happened. It was while the disc was spinning inside. But it isn't only because rrod was far more widespread. The first year had all sorts of problems. Some of you will probably think I am making some of these claims up but I'm not.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

The current xbox is probably the best hardware out there.

If by best you mean one of the far worse pieces of hardware in the history of hardware, then yeah.

I am sorry but the fail rate of over 50% is something that will forever stay with the 360.

It's not a car, it's not a blender. It's hardware at its most unreliable.

2005-2007 called, it wants your opinion back.

Yet despite that it still managed to have more lifetime sales then the former #1 brand in gaming for the past 2 generations.....

People prefer faulty hardware to a functional PS3.....that in itself says something.

Oh, but they only managed to stay a head of Sony BECAUSE of RROD; it forced people to buy new hardware and thus staying a head of PS3 ^^

So 360 was so awesome that people were willing to buy another one? Thanks for your input.

yes, every person i worked with who had a 360 had purchased at least 1 xbox after their initial one.  Some had sent theirs in like 4x and got tired of paying all the costs involved and just bought another one.  The thing was a piece of junk, and that's not a subjectional viewpoint.  I don't know one 360 owner before the black ones started coming out (premium model or something) whose didn't fail.

The Last of US in may still makes me think late 2013 for PS4.

but do we even know when beyond 2 souls comes out?

People who say next gen is coming too quickly make no sense

This has been the longest generation in the history of gaming

You're not making that up to be honest.  Some faults/flaws :

RROD (obviously)

Toshiba drives developed drawer faults (will not open when 360 is horizontal)

Hitachi drives had laser issues and spindle would lose its retaining metal ring causing discs to wobble in rotation causing read faults, disc scratching.

All drives had no protection to stop too much disc movement hence if a console was knocked during use it would cause the disc to foul the laser.  Microsoft answered this with a message saying do not move the console while in use.  A cynical person might suggest publishers liked this "feature".

The Hitman error was a disc read issue on your console, the console couldn't verify the copy protection, you also get the message Play DVD instead usually too eventually.  It would be a dirty or faulty laser.

For those saying YLOD is rare you're in denial, more than 50% of the original fat PS3's will fail.  The 40GB model significantly improved this thanks to the die shrink meant less heat produce.
