Console bundles are one thing, but bundling games with controllers shows desperation IMO. Good for the gamer im sure, but it means that the business isn't doing so good that they have to give away their best games for essential purchases like a controller.

Nevermind the console bundles. Forza bundles got nothing on the amount of Uncharted and Infamous bundling Sony is doing.

If they were new games then yes it would be desperation, but there old games, Sony have probably made the money back on them already. Sony are hopefully thinking that the customer will buy the sequel.

EDIT: I've just checked the prices of these bundles, they are more expensive than just getting the standalone controller. Sony are making profit with these.

He hides behind a thin veneer of business conscious posting.

It's marketing. That's why you give previous games away, so that you can sell the newer games for higher price. It's just like ps+. Give away quality early entries to get someone to play something they might not have tried yet.

sales doesn't understand how strategy works until ms does it.

I find it laughable you say that when I just factually proved your LBP thread wrong (and still refused to address that.

Im sorry but I see last place = better deals. The struggling guy always has the best deals so they can climb the market share ladder. I doubt PS Plus would have even existed if PS3 was #1 this gen. Same with cross buy if Vita had 3ds sales.

this is the thing sales.

You have not countered anythin in my thread. my op was that you cant call a game a flop based on early week sales.

You were unable to counter that, but you were able to counter points that i wasn't making and then called me a "new strain of fanboy" who says digital sales are becomong more and more relevan, which is factually true.

see even here you're making a backhanded comment about something that isn't even on topic., saying "last place=best deals" when now three people have pointed out to you that these are old games.

You don't respond to points, you argue points that YOU would rather argue, regardless of how relatable they are.

I proved that Battle Royale isnt following the same pattern as LBP. Thats......significant.

In a retail thread, you resorted to digital sales argument. Please tell me how this doesnt render your point and example moot.

Bundles are genius

Correct.  It worked pretty damn good for Wii Play.  However, it didn't work for Wii Play: Motion.  Mainly due to the fact that Motion+ took off with Wii Sport Resort and by the time they released Wii Play: Motion very people gave a damn.  This is probably the most extreme case of success and failure in bundling that I know of.

no, you did no such thing. You did not prove that brawl was not following the same pattern as lbp. You said that "sequels would not do as well". You did not provide a shred of proof of what you just said you did.

And I, I resorted to presenting sales correctly by mentioning that this title likely has a good bit of downloading, seeing as how sony's own data suggests nearly 30% of their full game revenue is now generated by psn, not including ps1,2,indie, or psn only titles.

except they're bundling a lot  of 4,5,6 year old, even games from ps2!

I'm not going to get into a drawn out argument with you hap. You have a big problem using actual reasoning and evidence, yet are probably one of the people who cant explain how ps3 is the only console up yoy for black friday, or how it's loss over the year is the slowest out of the consoles despite "having all these flops" and "bundling all these ancient games"

I think I may be one of the only ones apart from JustThatGamer and Sales to have actually contributed data to this thread, sir. You can also do without the arrogant remarks, you aren't as great as you project. But just so you know, I'm not going to let you talk shit about me. The moment you can make a proper retort to my arguments, I'll start taking you seriously. For now, you're another stain on a window of happy-bashing, which, as far as I'm concerned, is nothing new. People tend to get jealous of me because I actually have something interesting to say. And I back almost all my sales posts with facts and numbers.

@ your post. It's called a high tie-ratio this year... The question is, where are these sales coming from? Not from Sony's recent 1st party games, I'll tell you that much.

Total as of Dec 1 2012:

  SW total HW total
PS3 615,484,895

69,722,437

Total as of Dec 3 2011:

  SW total HW total
PS3 473,130,353

57,703,251

Difference: 142,354,542 SW / 12,019,186 HW for a tie ratio of 11.84.

What are these games that are selling? It's likely that it's the legs of older playstation 3 games, as well as late multiplats. It's defo not lately released 1st party games, since there are like, none this year (figuratively speaking).

Here are some of the totals I've come up with:

Set 1: the 3 uncharted's [w]

Set 2: the infamous games [w]

Set 3: Gran Turismo, Sports Champions & Eye Pet [w]

Set 4: Warhawk & Starhawk [w]

Set 5: Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain (add more if needed) [w]

Set 6: Sly, Ratched, Ico, Jak collections [w]

Set 7: God of war collections [w]

Set 8: The resistance games [w]

Set 9: MLB Games [w]

Set 10: Motorstorm games [w]

Set 11: LBP + Modnation [w]

Take a look at them, you'll see most of them went up during the black friday period. Nothing to make any of them explode, but all mostly bumped up across the board. It makes it clear that these games are either bundled, at a more affordable MSRP, or turned into collection packages, all leading to increased sales during seasons like Christmas and Black Friday. Then there are the multiplats which actually sell PS3s brand new in and of themselves (ACIII and BO2 for example).

when in doubt, ignore. I posted actual numbers from the weekly data and posted week 2 sales for the game. You clearly missed it....even though I posted it twice.

Alright I'll explain why sony does this.

Games that they bundle are of course first party games. This does help these games reach 1 million in sells but I also want to point out that these are good games for the most part. What it does is helps them sell future installments of the series, or even previous installments. It does not matter how you get a game in somebody's hands, you just get it there. It is a a strategy that helps for long term growth. Also they have these deals to catch people's eye, then they can sell even more games once they do. It's not rocket science people, use your guys brains.

How does that PROVE that games cannot be called flops based on early sales?
Just pointing out that it is selling less based on one week doesn't prove anything except that it wontreach 5m like lbp did, where i would agree. Even in the predixtion thread for the game i said 1.8 to 2.4m.
Face it, you were arguing a SECONDARY point that YOU decided was a better argument.
That wasn't the op point.
The op point is don't call games flops based on a couple weeks of sales, and is a response yhread to the dozens of "we need to talk" threads that have been using such limited evidence in the past weeks.

Wow, the lot of you can't take a critical question. Just because you don't share the same view automatically make them a troll.

OT: Take recent releases for example. Vita bundled with 3rd party games. Namely, Call of Duty and Assassin Creed.
They have to be bleeding Sony some money since 3rd parties aren't giving away free games like that.

I can't wait for the The Last Guardian bundle!

I actually find his PoV far more interesting than that of many others here.

If the strategy would work, then you would have a point. But the problem is, as he pointed out, they're bundling all their mega-hits with controllers, so it makes one wonder if they're having trouble selling these games on their own, as trad controllers never needed bundled games to demonstrate their use (a contrast with Nintendo's strategy).

Mega hits? When those games were bundled, it was long after they released and they weren't selling amazing numbers. The only game you could say was an amazing hit is LittleBigPlanet. And yes, Nintendo bundles too. Mario Kart, Wii Play, Wii Sports, NSMBWii, all saw bundles with some form of hardware AT LAUNCH.

I bought my Zelda: Skyward Sword day 1 bundled with a Wiimote+, which was only $15 more expensive than a regular Zelda game. Sony never came close to something like this, definitely not with these old games that you guys posted in this thread.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
