Forums - Sales - Sony relying on heavily bundled and/or deep discount just to get games into million sellers list?

Bundling a game or two offers value for the consumer at the expense of the manufacturer, developer, and publisher.  The intention is that by giving away a game you generate additional hardware and software sales (long and short term).

The thing I think that's going to bite Sony in the ass is giving away games full-outright with PS+.  The intention of PS+ is to subsidize PSN.  Giving away a single player game doesn't negatively impact the service, builds value with the customer.  The only challenge of it is that it puts a strain on the network.  That aside, it's the multi-player games given away for free that just shoots Sony in the foot.  It builds value for the customer, but it costs Sony if a gamer continues to play the game after they allow their PS+ subscription to lapse.

I don't think Sony knows how to make money.  Yes, they know that gamers like free stuff and they're doing their best to give away as much as possible for free, but the end result is that it hurts their bottom line more than it helps it.

You should learn how the PS+ works, cause you have no idea about it. Trust me, it's a great business model that will bring Sony money they wouldn't get otherwise. Quite a lot of money actually.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

I see nothing wrong in bundling cheap old games (even PS2 ports!) with controllers. Nintendo is bundling controllers with brand new games day 1 and nobody is claiming that their stuff isn't selling!

I wouldn't say that that's what they're doing. I think the price of the bundled games is factored into the price of the console. The 250GB and 500GB models would probably cost less than they do without the bundled games. I do think it's a good way to generate hype for some series that might not otherwise have it though like "Infamous". Still I think the best PS3 bundle would be "Uncharted Collection" and "God of War Saga" with the free year of Playstation Plus, the 500 GB HDD, and a choice of white or black console for $299.

considering the extreme crash of wii software sales in the past 24 month this thread is pretty strange.
Making profits without selling games?
Making profits with extremly cheap wii bundles?

The prize of ths ps3 is pretty solid in the past few year and every year the cost of production is falling.
If you sell a ps3 at 250dollars and the win is about 52dollar,than the win is still around 50 dollar if you add one or two pieces of plastic(blu ray game)to the console, call it bundle and sell it for 250dollars.
Estimate that every new customer would buy(avarage) 2 more games, some blu rays and some dlc's =30-50dollars more.

It's marketing. That's why you give previous games away, so that you can sell the newer games for higher price. It's just like ps+. Give away quality early entries to get someone to play something they might not have tried yet.

sales doesn't understand how strategy works until ms does it.

I actually find his PoV far more interesting than that of many others here.

If the strategy would work, then you would have a point. But the problem is, as he pointed out, they're bundling all their mega-hits with controllers, so it makes one wonder if they're having trouble selling these games on their own, as trad controllers never needed bundled games to demonstrate their use (a contrast with Nintendo's strategy).

Mega hits? When those games were bundled, it was long after they released and they weren't selling amazing numbers. The only game you could say was an amazing hit is LittleBigPlanet. And yes, Nintendo bundles too. Mario Kart, Wii Play, Wii Sports, NSMBWii, all saw bundles with some form of hardware AT LAUNCH.

I blame Sony because that's the third holidays of GT5 and no heavily bundle.

Heavily bundle is good for both... hardware and software.

Well GT5 doesn't need to be bundled anymore its already very cheap $19.99 US (that's how much my copy was) or less and at this point there are a lot of other great games that will do a better job at pushing hardware through bundles.

I want to see it outlessing GT3

It will sell over 10 million copies which is good enough.  Also it has a higher attachment ratio then GT3 already.  Tried out the Corvette concept car yesterday its actually pretty decent.  The "Red Bull X2011 Prototype11" is my favorite car so far its a beast and with it I will win tons of races and make a lot of money.

Nevermind the console bundles. Forza bundles got nothing on the amount of Uncharted and Infamous bundling Sony is doing.

If they were new games then yes it would be desperation, but there old games, Sony have probably made the money back on them already. Sony are hopefully thinking that the customer will buy the sequel.

EDIT: I've just checked the prices of these bundles, they are more expensive than just getting the standalone controller. Sony are making profit with these.

I find it laughable you say that when I just factually proved your LBP thread wrong (and still refused to address that.

Im sorry but I see last place = better deals. The struggling guy always has the best deals so they can climb the market share ladder. I doubt PS Plus would have even existed if PS3 was #1 this gen. Same with cross buy if Vita had 3ds sales.

this is the thing sales.

You have not countered anythin in my thread. my op was that you cant call a game a flop based on early week sales.

You were unable to counter that, but you were able to counter points that i wasn't making and then called me a "new strain of fanboy" who says digital sales are becomong more and more relevan, which is factually true.

see even here you're making a backhanded comment about something that isn't even on topic., saying "last place=best deals" when now three people have pointed out to you that these are old games.

You don't respond to points, you argue points that YOU would rather argue, regardless of how relatable they are.

Here is a very simple explination for these bundles. One all of these games are at least 2 years old two the company is likely losing money from people buying these titles used. Lastly, all of these games have sequels worth buying and Sony believes that people will want to continue the series if they enjoy the game. So now they have sold another copy of Uncharted 3, God of War 3 or God of War Origins, Ratchet and Clank TOD, Quest for Booty, All for One, the Original Trilogy or Full Frontal Assault, and finally Little Big Planet 2, Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves, or Little Big Planet Racing.

Customer feels like they are getting a good deal so Sony builds satifisfaction and loyalty with their products and they generate future sales.

Bundles are genius, samething as what they do with Playstation Plus they offer free games usually with lots of DLC or from third parties to get word of mouth marketing out. Or to encourage you to buy a whole series. This worked on me when they gave me Back to the Future and worked again when they gave me Walking Dead.

Bundles and free games are awesome and they sell systems. Why else do you think that all three systems have pretty much done this from launch. These decisions make plenty of sense it is this thread that doesn't.

It is not a bad thing in the customers' side. We get more bang for our bucks with either a "free" game or half-priced game very early on the new releases. However, is Sony just cutting into their profit when they utilize this way too often?

So much so that Nintendo is following their footsteps. Yes, Nintendo is copying Sony, again.

The difference is that Nintendo managed to sell those "free" games at (near) full price for years.

I am so confuse about this Nintendo copying Sony again... Hasn't Nintendo always made bundled consoles?

AFAIK N64 was sold without games bundled.

Close, but I believe it was bundled with SM64 in france. And there was a DK64 bundle afair

That a very cool bundle I got mine with Star Wars:Racer.
