Pretty much this, the winner is determined by online polls. And I don't know how they come up with the nominations, but they need to change their method, because New Super Mario Bros. 2 being nominated over Resident Evil Revelations, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Zero Escape, and Professor Layton is just dumb.
But props to Vita / Sound Shapes, I heard it's a good game. Thought LBP Vita was supposed to be better, but the VGAs don't care about what's 'better', they care about what's more popular.

KIU needs to be a demo for nintendo e shop!!! Its a must buy game and the visuals are beautiful, great story,and best of all online multiplayer fun!!! i think it should 2-2.5 mil lifetime!!! Come on Nintendo We need a sequel!!!!!!

Far as I know this is untue, only the Most Anticipated is actually decided by voting, the rest your vote doesn't matter. The awards are decided by a panell of journalists. Whether or not you put stock in the awards is up to you, but this statement is just not the case.

Exactly while NSMB2 ís fun those games you listed are much better! I think if people give KIU a chance it should sell alot more! A demo from Nintendo wouldnt hurt! I loved RE revelation whhen i played from the demo!!! Not saying game of the year doesn't deserve but NSMB2 over KIU RE revelation,etc wasnt fair IMO
lol you guys are a hoot. You do realize the award is not given by gamer polls right? It's a huge panel of judges from various media outlets.
For the record I also think KI should have gotten some recognition at least...been hearing a lot of good things about it.
At the end of the day what matters is your personal goty. Mine is Gravity Rush. Sound Shapes always had the best chance because it's a critical darling since the day it was unveiled.

Hey you, Sound Shapes is actually a good game!
It's a game I highly praised on VGC before it was released when I got a hands-on experience with it at E3 '11
