Forums - Microsoft - The REAL Problem With Xbox Live (OPINION)

I'm not pissing and moaning. You don't see me preaching to people to stop paying for live. I already said that if you want to pay for live then more power to you. Support the company that you prefer and move on with your life. Also when was the last time a great multi plat (i know you would say halo) shooter came out? This isn't including Far Cry 3 cause it's clearly, according to reviews, the best fps this year. Doesn't count cause it's not even out though. Most shooting games are mindless. Shoot here...move to objective...shoot some more bad guys to get to other objective yeah yeah yeah I get it. I'm a North American so I'm basically making fun of my own kind. Shooting games are mindless and easy because anyone and everyone can pick them up and be good at them. This is what makes them so appealing. Theres a reason CoD has been so successful. MW2 was my first first person shooter EVER and I managed to maintain a 1.5 kd. Shooting games are simply just not hard and that makes them appeal to people who just want to pick up a controller and play without actually thinking about the story.

If you were that reasonable from the get go, you woudln't have made your OP.

When was the last time a great multiplayer shooter came out? That's subjective.

I still play Japanese games on occasion and they're pretty mindless as well.

Yakuza, run here, beat some one up, talk, beat someone up.
Resident Evil, point here, shoot zombie, tallk, insert puzzle piece, shoot a monster.
Metal Gear Solid, watch a cutscene, walk here, watch a cutscene.
Final Fantasy, watch cutscene, walk here, mash attack, heal, mash attack, walk here, watch cutscene.
Monster Hunter, talk, walk, slash, slash, boring!
Phantasy Star, slash, slash, slash....
Tales of anything, slash, slash, slash...
Mario games, jump, run, jump...

Most Japanese games are also mindless entertainment as well. You're over analyzing shooting games because you personally don't enjoy them. You seem to be under the illusion you're a superior person because you enjoy the same old crap Japan has been pumping out since the 90s... you sir, need to reassess your life.

Nem, you are minority.

There are a lot of whiners on the internet complaining about XBL (not saying you are one of them), but those are the ones that would never buy an Xbox anyway. Even if MS cures cancer, they will complain about all the doctors losing their job.

What about the swing votes. They are always the ones who decide the election

I really hope they charge more for Live next gen. They could have three tiers. $99/year to play online, 149/year to access apps and $199/year all that plus new avatar items every month. That would be so cool. I hope they bring nice designer clothing for avatar and awesome shoes.

If they introduced an online gaming only tier it would be uch cheaper tha that.... I paid $45 for mine currently.

Well it is on sale today for $35 but that is not the point. What else do people do though. Aren't you paying for "superior" online infrastructure with no lag?

The problem is that live prints money. It is not a problem for Microsoft and looks like it is not a problem for the people who are willing to pay for it. Whose problem it really is?

I'm really shocked that so many are defending paying for Xbox LIVE. I can understand the argument "well it sucks, but how else am I supposed to play Halo?" I don't understand all the people defending the practice as if they were shareholders.

Maybe some of the people defending are shareholders or maybe they are happy seeing Microsoft's profits.

OK. But there is a difference between willing to pay for something and eager to pay for something. Wouldn't everyone here rather LIVE be free? I understand it might not be as good if it was free, but wouldn't everyone prefer a free service? I'm not saying people shouldn't be proud of using Xbox LIVE; I'm saying I'm surprised people are so proud of paying for it.

Would you prefer if your clothes were free? Don't you wish food was free? But what if the free options don't appeal to me as much as affordable pay options?

We pay because it gives us access to what we prefer. Also, its not a significant amount of money. Especially compared to other entertainment expenses.

This isn't about pride, this is people paying for a service they prefer on hardware they prefer.

I don't agree with everything in the OP, but I do agree paying to get access to online multiplayer and other applications is unacceptable. I subscribed to Xbox LIVE for four years: from 2008 until this year when I cancelled. And it wasn't about the money -- I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford the cost -- it was about the principle. I can play online with friends for free on Playstation, on Wii, and on PC. I should be able to do the same on Xbox.

I'm really shocked that so many are defending paying for Xbox LIVE. I can understand the argument "well it sucks, but how else am I supposed to play Halo?" I don't understand all the people defending the practice as if they were shareholders.

People will gladly pay for a service if the quality is worth the money. You don't need to be a shareholder to believe Live is superior enough to justify the entrance fee.

Your principal doesn't apply to the real world. I mean, I can watch digital TV for free. That means I shouldn't have to pay for Showtime. I can watch NFL games for free on FOX or CBS. That means I shouldn't have to pay for NFL Sunday Ticket.

Out of interest, what makes you think Live is greater quality then the competing services of PSN, Steam & Nintendo?

I honestly see very little (both in this thread and in general) that would make me want to pay for Live or assume it's superiority over the other services I currently use.

Reasons I have already expressed in this thread. In my years of using both I have found Live to have superior latency, more features, more users, and probably most importantly, better parity of features across all titles. What you get with one title on PSN is not true for the next title. I'm not even considering Nintendo's joke of an online offering or a PC service like Steam to be competition.

Those might not seem worth a few bucks a month to you and that's fine.

Nintendo's online is improving. It's not there yet but it's enough to be considered as competition with the WiiU release. Not sure why you wouldn't count Steam/PC either as it's esentially the same sort of service but for PC/Mac gamers and has proved just as sucessful if not more so (50 million active accounts on Steam).

Latency is a weird one as that should be determined on a game-by-game basis, especially as most games use P2P networks and latency would be based on another users connection (unless you're hosting). On the other hand, if you're playing games with dedicated servers then latency shouldn't even be that big an issue.

Parity I can understand as that's something that isn't as strong on PSN (or with older games on Steam), although it also prevented 360 users from getting cross-platform play on Portal 2 so it has a few negatives.

What are the additional features you mentioned?

This is an age old argument and yet Live keeps bringing in more money then PSN and gamers keep paying for it.

FYI, Love your sig, its so deliciously reliant on non-PS3 consoles to make your point :P

Seriously, the average 360 fan is not talking about party chat. Give it a rest. Its just something Sony fans focus on because they can't have it.

You are allowed to play the multiplayer side of the game, just not for free on the 360. Sony decided they and 3rd parties will eat those costs and good for them! When online services are available for free, that's great! But being entitled to free online services implies MS shouldn't be allowed to charge for online services. And since I'm not a communist I disagree.

Why do you think developers are okay with MS charging for online services? Because MS takes away their financial burdens of offering online services!

Well your example was bad. MS charged for Live and created a very robust online service never seen on a console before. That forced Sony to compete and create a better online service as well. I'm not sure how that's the same as publishers abusing DLC to make more money. I'll repeat, your example was bad.

The Xbox has a lot of streaming apps not found on PS3 or Wii. I also consider exclusive games as exclusive features. For example, where else am I gonna play Halo 4 or Gears 3 online? I enjoy playing those games online more than any other titles, so that a lone is a good enough reason to pay for Live.

I already have party chat on my vita =). Also the exclusives don't appeal to me. Microsoft is going towards the North American audience and it is obvious by the abundance of mindless first person shooters. I enjoy the diversity and creativity that the PS3 and Wii exclusives have.

Good for you buddy. Sony finally addressed the party chat problem, new hardware.

Hahahah! Oh boy! Not only do you sound like an elitist jerk for calling shooting fans "mindless", but you're clearly ignoring Sony pretty much just makes games for western audiences. The Vita is doomed in Japan due to 3DS getting most of the major Japanese support. So how is Sony going to make Vita appeal Japanese audiences? More Uncharted, maybe God of War, or perhaps Killzone?

Clearly I just whipped your butt in this discussion because now you're showing your true colors. You don't understand why people pay for Live simply because you don't enjoy 360 library. But you're ignoring millions and millions of people do. Live isn't for you and that's fine, but you don't have to piss and moan about it to people that enjoy what it does offer. Try growing up a little and stop getting upset not everyone enjoys the same things as you.
