2005 was kinda year 1 for DS. 2004 was only November and December. Monthly comparison would be more acurate tbh, but I've compared 2012 3DS to 2006 DS

Why should they care? Western consumers are profligate and buy it in the droves when it has so few games, If I was Reggie i'd be laughing all the way to the bank. The 3DS Japanese sales make sense as it has an amazing library over there, the Western sales don't even remotely make sense. So your quarrel should be with the consumer and not Nintendo.

And what's even weirder, is that at their Q2 financial results, they stated that they were disapointed with the 3ds sales in the west. Kinda of an odd statement.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Paper Mario could have been enough for me but Nintendo screwed up again. Super Paper Mario made me angry against Nintendo and this Paper Mario too. Ugh.

Just responding to the OT:

I believe that Vita not being much of an opponent has made things slightly easier for Nintendo. Of course, we live in an era in which Android and iOS truly have stolen a large part of the handheld gaming pie. But in terms of the 'hardcore' gaming crowd, this time Nintendo has no opponent and can play ball with an empty net. What this means of course is that they are under no pressure to release new IPs and great games, because they have no one who can steal them a relatively large part of the pie.

The 3DS can never and will never be the success DS was. This is because DS had almost all of the market for itself, including the casual market -- and a decent opposition from Sony. 3DS is unchallenged by Sony, and with Nintendo's renewed focus on hardcore gaming, I do not believe they are really worried for losing a market segment over to Apple and Google/Samsung. They are so far positioning 3DS to be a new N64/Gamecube which ultimately means many ports, little originality and could perhaps alienate Nintendo fans even more.
