Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gaming company loyalty is a dying breed. Lines are now blurred.

I remember the simpler times during the N64 vs Playstation, SNES vs the Genesis, Gameboy vs the Gamegear, and before my time there was NES vs the Sega Master System. There the lines were drawn. You owned one console and didn't own the other. Rivalries were set. You were either on one side or the other.

As the generations progressed, those lines are now blurred. Today, We have more multiple console owners then ever before. That in itself is fine. This breeds fair competition and an environment where all 3 gaming companies can thrive. I couldn't be happier with this generation in terms of fairly distributed sales between MS, Sony, and Nintendo.

What is an annoying by-product of such equal competition is the debates. We still have fans of all three consoles and the forums this gen have been particularily active over the years due to competition, namely between 360 and PS3. So we can all surely confirm that people have their loyalties this gen, arguably more so then any other gen before it. But we see diehard PS3 fans who also game on their PC. 360 fans who own a PS3 on the side. Wii owners who own one or more of the above.

This is progressive in the eyes of many im sure, but in the spirit of us being on a forum meant for the exchange of ideas and debate, owning "the enemy" can automatically discredit you IMO. You shouldn't claim to be a diehard 360 fan if you own a PS3 for it's exclusives. PS3 fans shouldn't declare their biases if they own a 360 or game on a PC. Saying "its collecting dust" or that you haven't played a game on it since the last big exclusive doesn't change that you bought one. You spent your money on it and it resides in your house. So obviously there was some reason to purchase one in the first place, meaning that your favourite console wasn't enough to satisfy you by itself.

I only own a 360 and never seriously considered buying the competition. I have the capacity to buy all three, but I chose to get the one console that is the best all-in-one package. For me, its 360. PS3 or Wii or PC could be the answer for you guys. But to pick a side in a debate while owning the competition....just doesn't seem right. Where's the loyalty? If your a neutral gamer then this thread shouldn't even concern you.

I don't know. Guess I am just nostalgic for the good ol days where the lines were clearly drawn and everybody knew where everybody else stood. Now we have people who own everything and claim to love one of them the most, while at the same time falling back on the "I bought everything" card whenever their biases are exposed. I miss the old days.

Thoughts?

Damn Neutrals.......

Yeah, I was one of those guys that loved Nintendo over everything during the 8-bit/16-bit ers. There was this one tme when we found this Sega lover walking through our neighborhood. When we were don'e, he pprobably wished he had the speed of Sonic the Hedg.......nevermind. Anyway, Over time, I learned that I didn't want brand loyalty to come between mme and good games. Yeah, I own every console but I still have my favorite.

In the end, it really doesn't matter who you love the most as long as it's not Sony.

Posting from a cell phone really screws things up. I keep getting double letters and skipped letters. Forgive me.

I blame call of duty.. if it only had cross platform play the 360 vs PS3 fanbase would be much more intenser... imagine matches between your 360 friends against me and my PS3 buddies..

Well there are more consoles worth owning than ever before.
There have never been 3 consoles with great library of games before.

I also have the money to buy multiple consoles, but I don't have the time. I chose to stick to one console only this gen.

My respect for you just increased 10 fold. Its very hard to find a PS3 only owner, even for me.

I own only a PS3, because of time. Although I sometimes play other consoles at friends houses or something.

But I think that you can have multiple consoles and enjoy one more and defend that one. If having more than one consoles will make you enjoy gaming more... Go for it!

Owning just one console because of loyalty is pathetic. Guys that do that are blind and dumb.

If you only have time/money/interest for one console, that's ok.
If having more consoles will make you enjoy gaming more but you don't do it because of loyalty, it?s simply wrong and stupid.

And there is not such thing as console neutrality... the console war is not a REAL war...

Well, I remember when I was a kid, I owned and loved the SNES but also wanted a Genesis. No 'loyalty' from me in that way haha.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

I only own a 360. Ive learnt from these forums that PS3 people nearly all also game on a PC and 360 people usually own Nintendo handhelds.

Wtf?

You respect people more just for owning one single video game console and ignoring the competition? Do you have less respect for people who are not loyal to their favorite brand?

That makes no sense. If you own all or at least more than one console, your opinion is more informed. An informed opinion deserves more respect than an opinion coming from a guy who refuses to take a close look at the competition.
