Forums - Sony - Is the PS4 Sony's last big effort?

I think Sony will be just fine as long as they don't make a super expensive console (more than $400-$450 will be too much imo). However, Sony have to somehow gather the "casual" market, there is no way around that, simple because gaming companies can no longer relay only the "core" market alone (and both the big 3 know this). The problem is that unless Sony does something truly revolutionary it will be a really difficult task, specially with the Kinect and Nintendo in general (And kinda indirectly: the smartphones).

You mean on families? Casual is way too vague a word.

Families is where the money is at.

Sony has a nice variety of 1st party exclusives from family to core.

1. Sony is fine. Not going bankrupt any time soon.
2. PS4 will be sold at a loss, just like all other Sony consoles. It will be a powerhouse.(No, they won't repeat the same mistakes as the PS3)
3. 1 single device alone can't "save" a company. Even if the PS4 was sold at a nice profit from Day 1 and sold 100million units lifetime, Sony's TVs will still be losing money, they'll still won't have a phone competing with the iPhone or Galaxy...

Is this a troll thread?

Everyone knows I'm a Sony fan, if you think this is a troll thread it's probably because I may not know all the information, hence why I'm making this thread to get my questions answered.

Used the word casual because that's the most used term nowadays, so yeah I'm referring to the families in general.

There aren't many 1st party Sony games which appeal to both "casuals" and "core" gamers, only Little Big Planet comes to mind.

Nintendo and PC gamer

People tend to think Xbox is doing fine and PS3 is doing horrible. But look at the sales, they are essentially equal. On top of that, PS2, PSP is making them money.

They cannot drop PS Vita now, if they do, publishers will lose confidence in Sony. Who's going to publish games for PS4 then? who will have the balls to take that risk then? Sony needs to have its own heavy hardware movers like Pokemon and Mario, they haven't found it yet in the past 15 yrs in the business unfortunately. Prior winners are mostly 3rd party i.e. Final Fantasy in the PS1/PS2 era, COD in the current gen.

Sony is pretty close to breaking even or even earning money on the PS Vita, they need to keep pushing this thru and they need to acquire or strike more deals with companies only making Vita games. And the current first parties are mostly on home console

I'm waiting to hear about the PS4 to see which direction Sony is going. Nobody knows what the price is going to be for the system, how many gigawatts of juice it will need, what games are being launched with it, what accessories it will need, etc.

The *smart* thing to do would be to release a system that is not at as high of a price and not as large of a financial risk as the PS3/Vita have been. The PS3 didn't fail, nor did the PSP, but they made bad decisions with both that have kept them from taking off like they really really should have with the momentum behind it. If they keep making the same mistakes, I think at most it will cripple the gaming division and slow the momentum, but it won't stop it in it's tracks... they need to make it more financially viable for developers to get back their money and making a more affordable system would do that.

I don't think it has to be Wii U cheap, but $350 or so would be about right.

It all depends on whether Kaz can reel things in. Sony needs to get out of the shot gun mentality, and focus. They have had all the tools to be bigger than Apple for years, but they have pissed it away. I love Sony deeply, but they are confusing as hell even to a person who breaths their business.

Take the cell phone line. What is their flagship phone? SL, TL, Arco S, Tipo, Tipo Dual, Advance, P, Sola, U, ION, S, Walkman, Pro, Neo V, Active, Acr, Ray, Play,,,,,,

What a confusing mess. How is marketing supposed to focus when they have no flagship name to advertise? Every six months something new is launching, and people are stuck with 2 year plans. You can look forward 2 years a say, I think i'll get a Galexy or an iPhone next time. Sony does not give consumers that solid product to consider.

This can be seen all over the place, and between it, and the inability to function as one company have drug them down. I still have hope for Sony, although they will never become what they were capable of. They still have the tools to be right in the mix with Apple, Samsung, Google, and Microsoft. If they can narrow their product line, and streamline their experience across devices, they can still find success.

Should Playstation 4 lead the way? Hell yes, Playstation should have lead the way the last 10 years, but the people in charge could not get it out of their head that it was a child device. Ken intended Playstation to be a streamlined , fun, PC on TV experience from day one. It was supposed to be ease of use, party up front, business in the back. Now with Kaz in charge, maybe Playstation can become what it was intended to be.

Gaikai, streaming and 10yrs of PS4.

Next "console" cycle will be an eternity for ms,sony, and even odd man out nintendo. I think all these developers are right after next gen you can kiss physical hardware goodbye.

Well it's not looking good obviously, thread after thread I'm getting more and more discouraged that my favorite gaming company is doing worst and worst (A lot of double words there). There doesn't seem to be anything big for the future on other Sony gadgets except for the PS4, so can Sony afford to release a console that will cost them money for maybe another year? will they attempt at a profitable console?

It really seems like the PS4 is the only thing they have left up there sleeves (if there's something else out there that there working on that looks like it can make them some good profit please let me know so I can keep an eye on it), so if it does horrible could this bankrupt Sony? Could it be the end of Sony's gaming division? it's really scary I'm to old to develope another hobby!

Why would Sony get rid of the only division that's currently profitable?

I think Sony has learned from their mistakes with the PS3 and the PSVITA, and will have a very successful console with the PS4.

They need to launch the PS4 with at least 3 major AAA must have tittles, like Uncharted4, GOW4, KZ4.

i dont see that happening bro, they wont release 3 of their biggest games at the same time, maybe three AAA games in the first year is very possible, i think they learned something from the Vita launch and PS3 launch. i think they will release the system with KZ4 along side some new IP's in the first year. then uncharted 4 and gran turismo 6 in the next year or so. sony santa monica wont release anything until 2016 unless they have another team working on something now
