this is ridiculous, why cant people just accept that it isnt performing as high as they expected? every game gets its fair share of bad reviews. you guys are literally saying "lets take out all the bad reviews because we dont agree with them" and the op is saying "lets choose which reviews we want to take, and get the average out of the reviews we picked". is metacritic perfect? no, but guess what, all games go through the same thing, all reviews are taken and average is taken from the scores, whether its mario, halo, uncharted, CoD, or games like pitfall. the same rules apply to all.

Yes the same rules apply, but the same reviewers aren't used. The only review sites that get tallied every time are the top ones that go out of their way to employ enough reviewers to review all the latest games. Halo 4 is getting what amounts to troll shots because a few websites are using it to garner hits.

As for your the top 10 websites in the OP. I didn't pick them so much as grabbed them from a list of top gaming websites. I didn't choose the scores and find the websites. I grabbed well respected websites and found the review scores for the list.

What I'm proposing is that a set of 10 websites be used for ALL future arrogates. That way we don't have huge divides in the quality of the reviews uses to average it out. The same top websites will always produce quality reviews with integrity. I find it a little insulting, but really not that insulting, that you would think I went out and found the best scores I could. If I wanted to list ten perfect Halo scores I could.

i ment no insult to you or anybody, and honestly i dont understand how you would be insulted. but in a way you did chose the websties because you only decided to take the top ten, why just 10? why not the top 20? top 30? plus there is a flaw in your suggestion as one of your top and "respected" sites, IGN did have some controversy regarding review scores, check this thread. reviews are flawed, we all know what but when you take all the reviews, it usually gives out a good idea of how the game is.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=149030&page=3#1

I wasn't really insulted. I just wanted to make sure you understood that I didn't cherry pick the websites. I grabbed only ten so it would be simple and easy to calculate. I'd be happy to swap websites and scores if you have a better suggestion. I personly feel that IGN is a very worthy edition to the top website list.

its not about the websites, its just what your suggesting is doing the same thing as metacrtic but limit the websites, which in my opinion is wrong, its limiting the people you can give there opinion on the matter. i do have a suggestion though, how about we just cancel scores all together? make the reviewer say what he wants about the game and thats it, you doenst have to mark it, i really think that would be the best possible way to have reviews

But the utility of Metacritic, and sites like it, is in providing a heuristic tool for consumers who want to see the critical consensus for a particular game. Limiting the reviews to only ten wouldn't make it a very useful tool. In theory, Metacritic should become a more helpful site as more and more reviews are added.

Like I said, their's no consistancy. A game like Halo has to deal with troll blogs posting shit scores while other games do not. That's not helpfull. The reviews used should be of only the hihgest quality. Only websites with established credibility and integrety should be used. That list can be as long as  you want, but it has to be consistant.

I agree that sites like Metacritic should include publications like the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Entertainment Weekly, etc. And they should exclude blogs with 100 followers. But sometimes websites or magazines fall into a gray area that's difficult to define.

If Metacritic wants to be as representational as possible, it needs to include as many scores as possible. Sure, some of those scores will be falsified, but the idea is to get the average.

The other problem is that some of the credible review sites aren't as credible as their viewership and staff would suggest.

I agree with this. At least to me, the utility is that it compiles all the reviews in one place, so you can read the ones you want to read, whether positive or negative. The problem arises when people put too much importance on the aggregate score itself.

@kain_kusanagi

Id qoute but doesn't let me do it on my laptop for some reason anyways I remember playing batman arkham asylum and thinking it was the worst most trashiest game i've ever played imo id prolly give it a 3 or 4 outta 10 but yet that game has a 91% on the metacritic does that mean im wrong?

I appreciate the sentiment here, I really do, but I don't think this is the answer. Aggregate scoring sites like Metacritic will never be perfect, but I think limiting input to only the biggest and most read review sites would be a mistake.

My suggestion has always been to find two or three reviewers you trust, and follow their reviews. Odds are they will recommend games you'll like.

In any event, Metacritic has become something of a monster. When publishers started linking developer bonuses to Metacritic scores, things went sideways fast.

Pretty much this.  Metacritic is for people too busy to read individuals reviews and just want a general idea of the quality of a game, or for people looking for bragging rights because their system's game scored 0.43% more than the one on the other system.

The only other reasonable approach, as has already been suggested, would be to discard a number of the lowest and highest scores and then calculate the average. In the end though I don't think it's really worth it and you'd be better off finding some reviewers/websites whose tastes fall in line with your own.

I learnt, long ago, not to lose any sleep over Metacritic or Gamerankings scores as they are often, for my mind, significantly off the mark.

I trust IGN as much as any established website.

Sorry, but Halo 4 is not the only game that has to deal with those troll reviews so I don't see why it suddenly justifies to change the whole system just because your favorite franchise got trolled. The 2/10 is an extreme case for sure. But there are other examples of bullshit out there, even from the big sites. My favorite example is that RE Rev has the same score as Tekken Prime on EDGE. I disagree strongly but I manage to dealwithit.gif

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I love it when some people accuse Sony fans of meltdown over reviews, yet Halo fans do the same. Based on Metacrititc alone its no way GOTY material, but who cares, right?

Enjoy the game, don't obsess over reviews There is no problem with the review system, you just have to find reviewers whom suit your gaming taste.

I think its actually at 94 (360) on metacritic. Personally, I would only give it around a 5 or 6/10, but what do I know?

Yes.

j/k But do you honestly think the game is that bad. I mean if you really sat down and made a list of pros and cons, would it really be as bad as you think. If you look at the merits and what it is trying to do, did it fail? You don't have to like the end result, but a reviewer should try to look past that.

A movie reviewer can hate a child's film, but give it a good score because it's a great kids movie. A game review can dislike FPS but give a game a good score for being a good FPS.
