There's outer core, and then there's inner core (true hobbyists). Outer core wouldn't know, but inner core would. Inner core is a minority I'd estimate at some 20mil.

Outer core (people who buy what we call core games) seems to be much larger.

Courtesy of FOX, boys. A core game that was of higher quality (budget?) on the Wii, here are the sales. It was in 2010:

ok so it sold ~600k on PS360 each and ~200k on Wii. 1/3 the sales... in 2010 well after any core audience on Wii had vanished.

You invent an excuse for everything, Dead Rising was a bad port on old engine, PoP was 2010.  How about Tomb Raider from 2008 then?

1 Tomb Raider: Underworld PS3 2008 Adventure Eidos Interactive 0.42 0.48 0.05 0.20 1.14
2 Tomb Raider: Underworld X360 2008 Adventure Eidos Interactive 0.50 0.37 0.01 0.10 0.99
3 Tomb Raider: Underworld Wii 2008 Adventure Eidos Interactive 0.13 0.23 0.00 0.05 0.41

Mainly this.

"The whole thing has been oversimplified and dumbed down. The Wii puzzles are a joke, the combat is almost nonexistent, and the game is pretty short." - IGN, Tomb Raider: Underworld (Wii) Review

By this time, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed taught gamers a painful lesson about buying crap ports, even ones with Wii-specific features. Since at that time most Wii ports were crap, I believe gamers started to associate Wii ports with crap, which would go on to undermine The Forgotten Sands's actual superiority.

Not to mention the Wii version of Tomb Raider: Underworld had a really frustrating game-ending bug.

Who ever argued the HD twins combined were a smaller market than Wii?

It should never of being a competition between them. COD proves the games (mostly all) could of been down-ported and still provided a great game. Devs and Publishers simply didn't think they'd have good returns on that investment of a down-ported engine. Again, I think CODs 1m+ with each iteration on Wii proves that idea wrong too.

I would never of bought a PS3 had they down-ported AC, Batman, RE5 and a few other 3rd party games.

those games you listed cant be downported, so lets be real.

OT fact is those PS360 players simply buy more games, than your person who just wants to dance and exercise. Thats just common sense. You can throw the COD crowd in their as well, most of those players are fine just playing COD. I know some people like that myself

You're kidding, right? They down-ported Dead Rising and it was about 90% of the way to the 360 version-hell, it was probably even more fun because it didn't rely as much on being a tech demo as it was on 360.

The point being that, as is almost always the case, all devs do with more power is up the graphic detail and then proceed to give us the same exact games as last gen. But prettier. Yay. This means that down-porting is a joke because all you really need to do is pare back the visuals and, bam, same game on a much less powerful paltform. Really, when you think about it, it's actually pretty pathetic (on the part of game devs, who whine about wanting more power but really only want it to make the same games we've been playing for nigh-on a decade, but with prettier pictures).

fair enough, I still stand by that this was going to happen regardless. people especially people who actually play video games on the regular are not stupid. They knew how it was going to go down with Wii as soon as they saw what it was capable of and what it wasnt capable off, in stark contrast to the HD systems. Funny thing is alot of games did get downported and their own versions. But they didnt sell well, because they simpler werent as good. More power under the hood, the more you can do, its really that simple. If you have the option to get the better version of something, why would you not get it?

Either because you don't know there's a better version, or you don't care that there is. Once again I look at The Forgotten Sands, having played both versions, and think "If only they knew."

Why wouldnt I know if there is a better version? Im a core gamer so im going to know what is better and whats not. And i would absoulutely care if there is a better version especially if its miles better

I don't believe that all gamers that identify themselves as "core" pay so close attention. Playing games regularly doesn't automatically equal keeping up on all the news, and I've seen cases of core gamers who play games regularly, but focus on certain genres or franchises, so they have a bit of tunnel vision concerning different types of games. Don't assume that all core gamers are uber-informed like us VGChartz afficionados.

Now, those who pay extra attention to PoP (the fanbase) are the ones who are most likely to pick up the Wii version of TFS in any scenario (and I imagine many ploncking down the cash for both versions), so this is a good test to see how many really informed, dedicated gamers follow the series. Or (and this is a total assumption that doesn't matter) perhaps some people don't bother with reviews so much and would rather play a game of the platform of their preference even if the version isn't as good, meaning there are a large number of people in the fanbase that I really don't want to associate with. Actually that might explain why people are saying CoD was comparable on Wii (not me!)

what is a competitor product to red steel on the HD consoles? Yakuza? Red Dead?

This is what 3rd parties didnt do enough of on the Wii, building games from the ground up to cater for the system. I would have much prefered this than any down ports. Game like Assasins Creed could have existed and succeeded on Wii if they were built specifically for that system, Goldeneye Wii is a perfect example of this, a solid shooter built for Wii hardware and it sold really well.

Red Steel? That piece of crap? Probably Yakuza, which is good in its own right.

Red Steel 2? The good one? That's a more difficult comparison. Strange structure, unusual gameplay, Westen/Samurai setting...

...it's more like a spiritual successor to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Zan:_The_Samurai_Gunmanthis game than anything else.

If a game is treated like it will succeed (decent marketing, decent resources allotted), there is a greater chance that it will succeed.

Again I must post moar screenshots because I don't get enough opportunities to discuss this game, which is one of my top 10 favorite Wii games. One of the best-looking games on the system for sure, running at 60 FPS. Ubisoft didn't hold a lot back.

ding ding, we have a winner folks!

But I still think the reason for it is something we can argue a bit.

Is it because the market was poorly supported, and thus the twins "stole" sales off the Wii, or was the PS360 version simply going to be the better choice regardless, bottom line, and hence people chose what was better?

We need more data maybe to slice it.

I stand by the bolded and anyone who says that games never materilized, all they have to do is look at the numerous multiplat games that did release on Wii that sold worse, NFS series, SW FU, the Spider-mans, just to name a few

Ive never even heard of those terms, but i still wager that even those people know about what is better. Look at a screenshot for a wii game then look at the HD version of the same guy, almost night and day in each instance, if this were true why didnt Wii versions of games do as well as HDs if the true hobbyists is such a small number?
