Forums - Gaming - Dispelling the myth: The Wii market is (NOT) bigger than the HD twin market

So, what's your take?

News to me. 6 9.38%

I already knew. 58 90.63%

Total:64

nice thread and nothing no one already knew.

A graph was not really necessary as on VGChartz home page has Wii = 41.5% - 360 = 29.6% - PS3 = 28.9%

only thing missing is how many % of these are multi console owner. I for one own all three lol.

Well the graph is there to show that historically it's been like this.

Kowen's article is good too for that, and a nice read.

If the so-called HD consoles were that great than why did this game come out worst on them, and i'm not just talking about games play.

GoldenEye 007
Wii: 1.70 million
PS3: 0.59 hundred thousand
360: 0.37 hundred thousand

James bond casually sleeps around with a bunch of women, that's why.

I love how people fall back on this fail comparison and always leave out that the HD versions was a year late port, more expensive and had half the ads

Reloaded had way more adverts here in the UK.

Ok i will let you have Blood Stones sales as well.

James Bond 007: Blood Stone

360: 0.56

PS3: 0.37

fair enough, but they were always on the decline and they never sold as well as at least one of the HD console versions, he says that core gamers left they Wii, I dont buy that as we have evidence to suggest that they were ALWAYS on another console. or at the very least, they had two and slowly stopped playing one of them

Thanks :).

Well, I don't think he was arguing that the sales weren't on other platforms at first, I think, and I could be wrong, I think he was mostly arguing that they were on Wii also, and that changed for the worse over time, due to poor support of that market over time.

fair enough, I still stand by that this was going to happen regardless. people especially people who actually play video games on the regular are not stupid. They knew how it was going to go down with Wii as soon as they saw what it was capable of and what it wasnt capable off, in stark contrast to the HD systems. Funny thing is alot of games did get downported and their own versions. But they didnt sell well, because they simpler werent as good. More power under the hood, the more you can do, its really that simple. If you have the option to get the better version of something, why would you not get it?

didnt have that much adverts in the US which is a bigger market than UK anyway. Blood Stone isnt even in the same genre. dont know why that was brought up.  Those are good sales for GE on WIi, but thats about how well a good FPS does on HDs anyway.

ding ding, we have a winner folks!

But I still think the reason for it is something we can argue a bit.

Is it because the market was poorly supported, and thus the twins "stole" sales off the Wii, or was the PS360 version simply going to be the better choice regardless, bottom line, and hence people chose what was better?

We need more data maybe to slice it.

It could be marketing. To one again quote GameInformer's review of The Forgotten Sands...

"If there’s one thing Ubisoft has done wrong here, it missed the chance to hype this Wii game independent of the entry on other consoles."

However, that's based on the assumption that developers are going to make a quality Wii multiplat that is built from the ground up in some form, then spend money to say "it's not the same, but it's really good!" Therefore, it may be a matter of whether it made enough sense to pour more resources into a Wii version, along with the challenge of making a fairly similar game on very different platforms (particularly in the control department).

I think that developing a good game for the Wii was a bit more complicated than developers and publishers had bargained for. And that is what caused all the crappy (not just downgraded like CoD) ports. Or failed rebuilt experiences by untalented development teams (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, anyone?). In the end, the best third-party games on Wii were made by good teams who know how to properly use the hardware, not outside developers stuck with porting duty and vastly outdated game engines.

Either because you don't know there's a better version, or you don't care that there is. Once again I look at The Forgotten Sands, having played both versions, and think "If only they knew."

Seece and Machina said they took this out of the gap charts long ago because the gap just kept growing and never changing. It was actually a fairly interesting chart to look at for a long time.

Courtesy of FOX, boys. A core game that was of higher quality (budget?) on the Wii, here are the sales. It was in 2010:

ok so it sold ~600k on PS360 each and ~200k on Wii. 1/3 the sales... in 2010 well after any core audience on Wii had vanished.

You invent an excuse for everything, Dead Rising was a bad port on old engine, PoP was 2010.  How about Tomb Raider from 2008 then?

1 Tomb Raider: Underworld PS3 2008 Adventure Eidos Interactive 0.42 0.48 0.05 0.20 1.14
2 Tomb Raider: Underworld X360 2008 Adventure Eidos Interactive 0.50 0.37 0.01 0.10 0.99
3 Tomb Raider: Underworld Wii 2008 Adventure Eidos Interactive 0.13 0.23 0.00 0.05 0.41

Mainly this.

"The whole thing has been oversimplified and dumbed down. The Wii puzzles are a joke, the combat is almost nonexistent, and the game is pretty short." - IGN, Tomb Raider: Underworld (Wii) Review

By this time, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed taught gamers a painful lesson about buying crap ports, even ones with Wii-specific features. Since at that time most Wii ports were crap, I believe gamers started to associate Wii ports with crap, which would go on to undermine The Forgotten Sands's actual superiority.

Why wouldnt I know if there is a better version? Im a core gamer so im going to know what is better and whats not. And i would absoulutely care if there is a better version especially if its miles better
