Yes, iOS tablet specific apps have grown  quicker, but they did have  2yr head start on tablet based OS design. Android's tablet specific apps come out every day or so and those articles are nearing a year old.... i.e. there are a lot more than "12" tablet specific apps now. In February 2012 (articles date) Android 4.0 was only a couple months old and was on ZERO tablets. Now we're at 4.2 and it a 4.x version is on every major brand tablet. (kinda biased as the ipad article is from August)

Nexus 4 is a phone and was not part of this OP. However, I'd agree that it sould have a 16/32 versions or SD card support and LTE. But, Android is focused on cloud support and frankly, I only use 4GB of my 32GB Gnex (I probably have another 40GB easily on Googles cloud for free with movies, music, pics, video, and docs). Its all on the cloud anyways. Most would actually be fine with 8GB and all the rest probably with 16GB. Kinda the benefit of being able to go to any PC or Android device, log in and see EVERYTHING you own. No needign to sync for an hour with iTunes. Local storage is really only for apps.

I hope you realize that a 6 month old article has little to do with the situation now as app development is much much faster than game development for instance.

Personally I had a 7'' android 4.0x tablet (cheap ainol novo 7 fire/flame china tablet) here for some days at the start of october and it really ran fine and there was no problem with any of the apps I tried. The reason I returned it was a lack of quality when using the HDMI and that the touchscreen didn't work well with a capacitive stylus.

Why are we comparing Surface RT with these? Just saying. Arent Ipad 4 and Nexus 10 out next year?

So shouldnt we compare the Surface Pro wich is out in January?

Or is that just not fair as it kills everything in specs by a huge margin.

You are welcome to compare them to Surface Pro if it is in the same price range. 

Edit: Also both Ipad 4 and Nexus 10 are coming this year. Well next month for Nexus 10. 

I'm not sure about the Nexus, but the iPad 4 releases this Friday on Nov. 2nd.(same day as the ipad mini release) My 64gb wifi iPad 4 is scheduled to arrive on that day. 

Nexus 10 comes out in two weeks.

SurfacePro will be a worse comparison as it will be hundreds more than either option and its hardware is not really any better, just a OS difference. The CPU/GPU on the Nexus10 is quite possibly really comparable with SurfacePro's low-end i5 and onboard HD 4000 graphics. Comparing it to these is actually going to hurt Win8's chances.

The Nexus 4 is a 4.7" screen so technically it does also fit with the 4", 7", 10" theme going on, even if the others are much closer to their number screen size wise than the 4 is.

Anyway, the openness of android compared to Apple wins for me. I am already planning on replacing my aging G2 with the Nexus 4 and the iPad 1 with the Nexus 10. Every apple product I've owned has always felt cramped to me and iOS never changed that, whereas Android has always felt like an open platform. If the Nexus 10 works out well enough I may not go ahead with replacing my Macbook pro. Just for further reference I also have a Chromebook and a dell mini 10 netbook running windows xp and #! linux. My desktop is windows and will never change from that until the windows ecosystem goes completely tits up.

If I want to distribute an android app on the web I can and I don't have to go to through the curated Play Store. If I want to distribute an iOS app on the web, it had better be a pure web app or no go. 

The aesthetics in many ways is better in the iOS than android, but in many other ways Android has better aesthetics.

Windows RT/8 is almost an afterthought here. We will see how the playing field looks a year from now. I know Microsoft is planning to spend a crap ton of money to market Windows 8, is going pay 3rd parties money to build apps for their market place. Still at this point there is little enthusiasm from developers (myself included) to develop for them. Most developers are focused on iOS then android and/or web then after they have already established a successful product and/or company they _might_ develop the app for windows RT/8.

Oh I thought a Quad core 3rd generation I5 and Dual channel 4 gb ram would destroy the specs in this thread. Maybe I'm wrong. I should not have built my PC. LOL. The Nexus 10 beats my PC then.

I don't get this. I mean for both you tap on icons to run programs. That's it. What is there to diferentiate the both?

The physical home button I don't like too much but that too is minor.

Now Win8 with swipe gestures for everything (I presume it's the same on the WinRT tablet too) it's different. I found myself swiping at the edges of an iPad to close a program. Much better than having to press button, then double press button, then tap on x and then tap away. (and I don't even like MS).

No this is a good comparison and just shows that Apple has got some competition at last.

I'm not sure when the Surface Pro is out (rumoured to be early next year), but it's likely to be significantly more expensive and may be around the $599 level or thereabouts.

Whereas the 3 tablets in this comparison and good alternatives, although as a whole I prefer the iPad 4.

We will find out all the proper specs in the next few weeks once the iPad 4 is actually released and taken apart as we are assuming it still has 1Gb RAM, although this hasn't be proven yet. The Nexus 10 screen is WOW 300dpi and is very impressive on paper, but we have yet to see it in action as we don't know how good a screen it actually is. The CPU/GPU in the Nexus 10 is a beast and could very possibly be better than the A6X, but again, we need proper benchmarks from both in practice before coming to a conclusion.

One thing that I'm surprised about is that the Nexus 10 is only $80 cheaper based on a 32Gb version of the iPad 4. There isn't much in it....and they may find new users will opt for the more established system for only $80 more.
