He didn`t support rape: "And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”
All he is saying that creating life - despite the origin - is something that comes from God. It was God`s plan that despite what happened, still, a life should arise.
Maybe, just maybe, this child will be the best thing to happen to the mother even being born under such conditions.

That is possible, but then anything is.  What people don't like about the idea of every single abortion being illegal is that it makes rape that much worse because there's no part of this where the woman gets a choice.  Maybe that baby will change her life for the better, but that should be her decision, not something that the government forces on her in the worst time of her life.  Just seems logical on my end.  Yes it's unfortunate that a human life will never come to be, but rape shouldn't have that added possible punishment added onto it for the victim.

But for anyone who sincerely holds to the belief that a fetus is a human, allowing abortion makes the rape all the more horrible, in that now there are two victims instead of one.

Oh I think a fetus is a human, not a thinking feeling one yet, but a human none the less.  And it's a shitty situation no doubt, and I'd prefer that the baby came to term, but I won't force it on someone at the lowest point in their life.  If some girl decides to have sex and screws up her birth control then that's on her, but a woman who was raped shouldn't be forced to keep a pregnancy from it.

But why, if the fetus is indeed human, should the fetus be forced to have its life taken away?  To be sure, something aboslutely horrific has been done to the woman. but murder is just as bad, if not worse.

That at least would be the argument against abortion in this case.

The difference I'd argue is that the fetus cannot live on its own.  It's a human life but it can't be transferred to someone else who doesn't believe in abortion, so the woman should have the choice on whether or not to take on the burden of that life.  At some point there should be a choice, I can see how a woman who has consensual sex had a choice at some point, but one who was raped never had a choice come into the equation for the sex part, so she should be given a choice for the pregnancy.

so 30 seconds before the baby is born, it is a clump of cells, and can be terminated?

while its headed down the birthing-canal, it can have scissor like instruments, stab into its spinal cord, breaking its neck, killing the child, but its not human?

but if they were to do it just 5 seconds later, it would be murder of a human?

I believe that before it is born, it is a fetus. After it is born, it is a baby.

As for whether and when to abort a fetus, I believe that should be the mother's choice, not something mandated by the government.

What magically changes in those split seconds that makes the fetus have rights as a human baby? I don't see where your logic is coming from unless its based on nothing but pure convenience and feelings.

What changes is that the fetus leaves the woman's body, enters the world, and begins to breathe. I am the father of a 13-month-old daughter, and I can tell you that moment is a big bleepin' deal.

It definitely is a big deal, but I don't see how that baby is less of a human 5 seconds before birth. The only thing that changes is that it starts to breathe on its own. Is the act of breathing what you consider the start of human life?

The government is protecting the other innocent in the story.
From a certain perspective i think it`s good that the system doesn`t encourage decisions based on suffering. Be that abortions as a consequence of rape or any other kind of consequences. To me, one of the objetives of a any government is to guide people do the best they can; to be the best they can, despite the circumntances.
By not allowing abortion in this case, it also helps the victim to try and not fall victim to despair, a despair that would have consequences that the person couldn`t take back ever.

I know that what i`m saying might sound strange but i hope you can understand what i`m trying to say here.
In the end, it`s bad enough what happened, let`s not make it any worse.

I would suggest that you are the one making the situation worse.  I have to look at it in terms of human suffering.  A fetus that is never brought to term will never feel pain or fear the impending doom.  It'll just die before it got a real chance at life, unfortunate but that's an option that should be up to the rape victim.  On the other hand forcing a woman to take a rape pregnancy to term will cause real human suffering in the here and now.  It's a choice between two shitty options, but it should be a choice none the less.

It`s not because it can`t express feelings or other signs of humanity that it should be treated with less dignity or respect. That would be unfair.
She will suffer no matter what happens. Do you believe that she wouldn`t suffer with the abortion? There is no easy path once the evil is done. To me, the only solution is try and be above the situation. Because, rape or not, any person who is put in a situation of suffering can embrace it and rise above it or give in to it even more.

Any woman who votes Republican at this point has seriously skewed priorities.

Yeah, she prioritizes thinking with her brian, and not her vag.

how is this controversal at all? only because people twist his words to fit their agenda.

Yes, gasp and egads; Mourdock is pro-life and only believes in making an exception for abortion when the mother's life is at stake. In cases such as rape -- an act he describes as  "horrible" -- he still sees the creation of life as something that is  always a "gift from God."

This is controversial because Christianity supposedly espouses the idea of a loving god, and people generally find rape as a bad thing.

which is why he said "rape is a horrible thing" but "life is a gift from God." this is nothing remotely controversal about this statement.

your promotion of a culture of ignorance and lunacy is astounding. You are completely devoid of any rational thought and reason on this subject, you are letting your partisan lenses cloud you judgement. something you have admitted to before. Step back, and look at this. watch the video, and tell me he is promoting rape. you can tell he cares, you can tell he is genuine in his belief to protect life. he clearly has no malice in his statements.

When you watch that, the original statement, how he presents his view in a perfectly mild and sensitive way, this backlash and how this was twisted in media makes me very upset. He chose his words very well, in a clear and intelligent manner that should make no one angry. Only because of the witch hunt state of liberal America did Mitt Romney have to distance himself from this statement even though in reality he most likely shares the same view.

Just look at the first few posts in this thread, being very trigger happy and saying all sorts of nasty stuff against him and against religion (until some of us came to defend this view and eventually in this thread we actually got a balanced strength of opinions discussing this).

It's not about dignity or respect, it's the simple fact that the fetus cannot live without outside of the mother, and she should have the choice of if she's alright with that.  If we ever come up with the technology to transfer a pregnancy I think that'd be the best of both worlds, but right now we don't and I'd rather err on the side of choice over life, simple as that.

But you don't know what they need to rise above it, being forced to take the child to term could just as easily be the thing that drives her over the edge and makes her commit suicide.  Maybe she could have gotten over it if she wasn't forced to carry a reminder with her for 9 months.  We can't know what is the right thing for the woman at that moment, and therefore we should leave the decision to her.

She'll suffer with the abortion no doubt.  I don't expect the decision to be taken lightly, but it should be her decision.

Whether God intended it to happen is irrelevant. The sad part is that he let it happen even though he knew it would happen, and saw it happen.

Mysterious ways indeed.

Why must God stop every crime? Why does God have to stop anyone from being killed or raped? It's not his job that's ours as we have free will. If he stopped everyone from doing what there doing  when it's bad than he he would be controlling everything and we would not be willing coming to him.

It's not mysterious it's you not using you not thinking or knowing what your talking about.

Hi there, ninetailschris. Dodging a ban?

*ahem*

Bolded: Are you saying that God has no free will? Are you saying that God is not willing to help victims as things occur? I'm not saying that God has to stop anyone from being raped or killed, I just find it weird that he doesn't. If I had a rat farm, or just a regular farm for that matter, and saw one animal attacking another animal I would do something to stop it, not just stand there and watch things escalate. Just saying.

Wasn't dodging ban if I wanted to dodge a ban I would have done the following.

Done it earlier.

Hide or change my Ip.

Picked a better name.

I had one day before I was unban so I decided that if I got ban I would just be back the next day.  Post 24th .... today is 25 not really dodging.

"Bolded: Are you saying that God has no free will? Are you saying that God is not willing to help victims as things occur? I'm not saying that God has to stop anyone from being raped or killed, I just find it weird that he doesn't. How does God not have free will if he planned  on being the judge and not the cop. He give a punishment harder then anything humanly possible. That's hell with last forever. He is doing something about it but it's not happening at current it's in the long-term. Every crime we do is not forgotten .... actually everything we do is not forgotten. Also in the long-run there is heaven in which every "evil" and pain is washed from the person and are in the ulimate sate purity. This are long-term solutions in which balance  free-will as how someone lives here will lead to final judgement(review). This shows God's plan ulimate court system. This was done even during Old Testament when someone did a crime the "people" would punish the person on the earth and God would punish them with the final trail. It is never expected for God to deal with day to day operations because then he would just be controlling the world and no one would do anything because they forced to act a certain way or fear of death. No one gets away with anything people just think if someone isn't currently  punished then no is doing anything but in reality that's not how things work. Like I said before God is the final judge that's his job and justice will come when it's judgement day.

"Are you saying that God is not willing to help victims as things occur? I'm not saying that God has to stop anyone from being raped or killed, I just find it weird that he doesn't."

If God wants people to be truely free he must let people do wrong just like he must let people do good. If you take on away your not free your controlled and your decisions are controlled. To add to what I said previously  if God were to stop everyone from doing a crime then people would out of fear not come to God because of Jesus atonement or out of free-wii but out of fear. This is assuming that you want him to physical come down and stop it. But one point of mysteriously stoping the crime then I would just use that you are not free if can't make choices to do wrong. This is way to for there to be no exuse for your own punishment like in the normal world. I feel Hell in forever toment from your all your sins is more than enough for someone who raped or killed someone. In the long-term the woman who was raped has had her justice and if she went to heaven she would be bothered with earthly problems anymore just like if the person was killed.  If killed then obviously if God thinks the person on judgement day will go to heaven then of course the person death isn't end and would have moved on to next step. The only difference from someone being killed and someone being raped is one last longer than the other. But there are people who get raped and recover from being raped (psychologically) with theropy or with God (praying or something in which you try to connect with God). On a side note have HAD a family member who has been raped and has recovered a lot from praying and asking God to help her from the pain which was emotional after the inncident. So, it doesn't end with raping or beating there is still chance to recover from horrible things like this.

"If I had a rat farm, or just a regular farm for that matter, and saw one animal attacking another animal I would do something to stop it, not just stand there and watch things escalate. Just saying."

Animals fighting each other has nothing to do with human crimes and really has no relation to God not acting on human crimes.

Please tell me if you saw a lion killing a zebra would you help? Bring up animals is horrible example for one. One some people don't care about animals that aren't dogs/cats and have a totally different moral system/laws. For example, if you saw someone testing on rats do you think that's a immoral thing?  What you say on it is nothing but subjective opinion based on your own personal bias the relationship between animals and humans. Honestly I don't think the average person would do anything  for the animals in "rat" farm or even for that matter judge you for not doing anything ( no laws or norm of thinking). That was simply horrible example which doesn't relate to how humans should relate to each other or even God for that matter.

Get this human examples or universial examples on how people usually think and not your personal feelings towards issues like animal discussions.

In conclusion.

God does something in the long-term which justfies both parties involved. The wrong party if God deems him to hell forever in toment based on everything the person did in his life then woman can rest knowing justice is coming. If the woman lived a life  that God deem for her to go to heaven on judgement day then everything she has problems with will be lifed from her. Finally all of this keeping intact free-will has this people choose to live they way they did and got judge for it when it's all over(judgement day). Judgement day will be the final court date forever one  and got has done as he promised since day one.

Granted, but I would say it's not just her taking on the burden of this life; she also has to actively terminate it.  It differs from forced charity in that way: the fetus has no choice in being there either, and can do nothing about it, so the fetus itself is not violating her own rights.  Whereas, the abortion is a choice, and, therefore,  would be violating the fetus' rights.
