Forums - General - Would you abort your unborn child if you know that he/she would be mentally retarded?

Since many things here are purely hypothetical.

What if you know you're getting a retarded child, you don't abort it because you think it's morally wrong, you know that this child needs double the attention of a normal child and you could not bring up enough time for a second child.

Would you admit that you rather saved one "retarded" life, than giving life to two healthy children, just because the retarded life was first ?

Because that sound morally wrong as well.

No, I would not.

Ah, good, one that isn't stupid :D.

Depends on the kind of life the kid will be able to lead. I know little about about mental retardation but I'm fairly sure there are multiple levels of it. Really, it depends on the kind of life the kid would be able to lead.

Depending on the extremity, yes. If I knew my unborn child would be mentally ill, deficient or disfigured etc, I'd insist my partner to have an abortion, we could always try again. I feel the potential human life would be better off not having to suffer with a short and/or miserable life. If I couldn't be completely independent and able to experience all the amazing things this world has to other due to being physically or mentally challenged then I'd rather be dead, personally.

I would in a second, a child can be conceived without much problem. The greater evil would be to allow a child to suffer and inflict suffering on the rest of the world when another child without that illness could be made a year later.

People with mental illness inflict endless harm on the world around them far more than they cause good. Some of you may say that the child with mental illness might one day do some great good, but for every child with mental illness that does any good, the other children with mental illness inflict horrible pain on the rest of the world around them. Far more than any good child could ever hope to make up for.

You may think me cold hearted to have an outlook like this, but I think the people who don't do this are the monsters. You knowingly unleash monsters on the world knowing how horrible they are likely to turn out. The monsters aren't the cold hearted who would sacrifice something to stop suffering, but the ones who would sacrifice nothing and lose everything.

I really don't want to have to decide who lives or who dies, but at the same time bringing a mentally disabled child in this world could lead your life down a path that you really are not prepared to commit to. A lot of people that don't have an abortion end up giving the child up anyway, it's really difficult to deal with mentally disabled people.
Not to mention that one day your life will expire and you will be leaving a mentally disabled adult behind to fend for themselves in this very cynical society.

Hard choice that i will ultimately let my wife decide, but i would encourage her to have the abortion.

This is a great view on the topic, and I agree completely. We need to collectively realize that emotions impair our judgements, and we should think rationally about important life decisions such as this one.

I strongly believe your emotions will override your given rationale when you have your own child with such a condition. Especially if the condition developed at a later stage in life, I don't believe you'd put him/her down for the common good.

If such a mentality was so easy to adopt when it makes so much sense, I'm sure we'd be living in that reality.
