Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pachter Says He Isn’t A Fan Of (Cough! Bipolar) Wii U, And Thinks Third-Party Support Will Be Dire

Famed Wedbush Morgan industry analyst Michael Pachter has confirmed that he isn’t a fan of Nintendo’s forthcoming console, Wii U. He says that Wii U is very similar to the DS, but looking between the television and the GamePad just doesn’t feel natural. Pachter also went on to say that he thinks third-party support for the console will be dire as very few developers will support the console. Here’s Pachter’s rant in full for those interested.

“I’m not a fan of the console. Essentially I look at the GamePad and the television, the two screens, and I see a DS that’s disaggregated. It’s very similar to playing a DS game. The difference is, with the DS your line of sight is on both screens. It’s easy to toggle back and forth. With the GamePad on the Wii U you have to look back and forth, and that’s not natural.

I understand the console is going to be way more powerful than the DS. It’s entirely possible you’ll get great experiences that are console-like but take advantage of the touch screen. But I think most developers look at the GamePad as either a gimmick or very DS like, and they don’t want to incorporate the touchscreen features because the games aren’t any better for them.”

“Nintendo will pioneer, they’ll do a far better job than anybody of exploiting the console and the control scheme, and I think others will learn from them,” he added. “I’m afraid we’re going to have a repeat of the Wii cycle from the publishers’ perspective and the developers’ perspective, where very few people will support it. Then if it’s successful they’ll come in, and they’ll fail. When they fail, they’ll go away again. The reason I think they’ll fail is, I can’t think of a third-party publisher that did well on the DS. I mean, Scribblenauts, so there are a handful games and you can count them. Nobody did very well on the DS, and I don’t think anybody’s going to do very well on the Wii U.”

They sold 90 million Wiis; it’s certainly less than 90 million hardcore fans. I would guess it’s between seven and ten million, and it could be 20 million but they don’t all have $350. When the hardcore fans are satisfied, I think sales are going to drop precipitously because I don’t think the thing is priced competitively with what most people think is a comparable console, Xbox 360 or PS3.

“I think that this thing, rather than launching and being the cheapest of the three consoles, which the Wii was, and very novel because no one had ever seen motion control before, this console is launching and it’s the most expensive of the three consoles and it’s not novel because it’s very much like the DS.”

Pachter is anti-nintendo.  He'd praise Microsoft if they took a similar approach.  Go figure.

Wii-U selling out for 2 years straight just comfirmed!!

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I'm putting money down that after Pachter said he buys the Wii U for Bayonetta 2 the telephone rang and Microsoft threatened to terminate the contract they have with him.

Either way, I'm happy now. I was really afraid the Wii U would bomb after Pachter said something positive about it but luckily we are back on track for DOOMination baby!

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Good news for the Wii U, it will have stellar 3rd party support then!

Fantastic news for Nintendo. They'll increase their value and sell tons of Wii U.

nonono, you got it all wrong; if Pachter says it'll bomb it'll sell like nothing before!!!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

So, the Wii U will sell amazingly well and have strong third party support then ...

Much like the groundhog seeing his shadow, Pachter seeing doom in a sure sign of success.

He had to say that?  Really? C'mon Pachter, your trollings used to be more subtles than that.

Anyway, given that he always go back and forth with his Nintendo predictions, what he says mean nothing to me.

But I have to agree with him that not every developer will support WiiU. And I don't think anyone is expecting that either.

But, is it necessary? I mean, if EA, Ubisoft and Activision have success with their launch games (something that I doubt) and bring all their future projects to WiiU, that alone will be a big improvement over the current situation.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Now I'm much confident that Wii U will be a success. Early I was worried about it, because Pachter was saying good things, but now that he's criticizing I'm sure Wii U will end up being the most successful console ever!

We need moar Zelda, now!

We need moar Unchartedzz!

We need less DLCs.
