Gonna post this in the right thread now. There was a survey in the early 90s that found that children under the age of 10 could more easily identify Mario then Mickey Mouse. I can't at the moment find the source for this... its referenced in the Mario Wikipedia page but the link is dead. I'll see if I can find it some where.

I believe it, especially at the time. Mario is super merchandised, you see Mario pajamas and toys and back packs and bed sheets everywhere, and in the early 90s it was worse, with the TV show and movies and everything. You don't need to play games to know him. Remeber though, even if you are not a Nintendo gamer, chances are you've atleast ahd a Nintendo hand held (possibly with Mario or Mario Kart) at some point in your life.

Out of the three video game console manufacturers the most popular icons unarguably are:

Nintendo = Mario.                           Xbox = Master Chief.                               Playstation = Kratos.

Unarguably huh? many would argue that Nathan Drake is a bigger icon than Kratos

I agree. Not only is Nathan Drake more iconic than Kratos, but the Uncharted series is far better than the God of War series too.

Mario, Pac-Man, Lara Croft.

Stwike him, Centuwion. Stwike him vewy wuffly! (Pontius Pilate, "Life of Brian")

In the op The chief hands down.

Overall in history Mario is the only choice.

Other characters like Link, Luigi, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Sonic, Tales etc all beat Masterchief.

Nathan Drake isnt an icon. Hes to generic to be an icon at anytime in Sonys history. Most would struggle to draw him without nothing to copy.

Mariio, Mastercief, Kratos, Sonic are al drawable from memory.

Anyway. Kratos imo is much more of an icon for Sony. Drake looks like every other TPS caracter.

So true.

Fenix's average line is like, " move out dirtbags we got a shitload of crap coming at us," and "Dom I am sorry about your wife , yet murder never ends for the badass."

I liked Cole train until the third at which point I thought he was annoying. "Always happy to please my fans," and "wooooooooooooooo."

Baird is the best. "Shut up sexy cause we have a lot of sexual tension, but we cannot get it out because your are dumb bossy broad and we are too busy killing shit."

And Dom this other co-op character looks like a hardcore cetnik. I mean why the hell can´t I choose which co-op character I want to be. Yeah he became a token n***** I mean he always was but it the third that was so obvious. To be honest I liked the whole crew except of Jon Travolta and Dom even the girls are cool.

I agree that Drake isn't much of an icon, at least right now, but hardly for the reasons you mentioned. I've not seen many TPS characters look like Drake at all.

I mean generic.

Max Payne, any GTA character, Kane and Lynch etc. Any game that just has a normal human person is hard to portray as an icon. Especially in a world where the real icons are eiither faceless ( Masterchief ) or catooned up. For example Link although a person dresses radically different than jeans and tshirt. Or suit. Or jacket. Link looks iconic.

Marcus Phonenix is a bit different. Because the character stands out. Muscle overload. Thick armour, etc. Its alot more memorable and iconic.

I never remember characters that are plain after finising the game unitl the neext title is announced unless the character looked radically different from the guy next door.

EDIT: When I think of Uncharted I dont think of Drake. Its not really like you can discuss Drake outside of the game. With Mario, Sonic or Masterchief often more than not those characters are thought of before the games. With Uncharted that is not the case.
