Forums - Nintendo - EA sent ME3 on Wii U to die.

Who cares if ME3 succeeds.

IF AC3 et al sell plenty on WiiU, then EA has some explaining to do to their shareholders.

you know, or they are testing the waters and using ME3 instead of 1 or 2 cause those games are old and lack multiplayer.

can't do 1, cause MS published it or something, so that is out,
so at best you had 2 and 3. which one would you put on there? 2, which was ok but ripped everyone off with DLC or 3 which had a controversial ending that was fixed, with a fun multiplayer

I'd want 3.

ME1 is coming separately to PSN and to the PS3 trilogy collection. It is no longer held exclusively by Microsoft.

The only way this move makes any sense is if ME3WiiU becomes METrilogyU.

Otherwise EA sucks and should die in a fire.

It isn't like this is the first time that a major company made an exceedingly poor decision.  EA and Bioware's entire handling of the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle is proof of this. But the idea that EA is making what many, including myself, think is a poor decision is alot more likely than the possibility that EA is making some Wile Coyote type scheme to make a poorly selling game.  IF they didn't want to make games for Nintendo, all they have to do is release a statement saying "the Wii U does not coincide with EA's company goals at the moment" and blah blah blah.

And of course, there is the possibility that we're wrong, and this is a decent decision.  Maybe they'll make money on this, and they'll get experience working with the Wii U hardware to make future ports easier.

Maybe it would be easier to convince me that this isn't what they're doing if EA hadn't done it before. This game bears all the markings of an EA intentional flop:

• inferior version of an existing product: check. Even if the trilogy wasn't happening, I haven't found anywhere confirmation, or even a mention, that the Wii U version will be supported with post-release DLC. Sure, it comes with From Ashes packed-in, but will Wii U players ever get to play Leviathan, Omega, or future DLC adventures? We still don't know, but it doesn't sound like they will!

• bad release date: check. last month it was reported to be a launch title for Wii U, but now it doesn't appear on Nintendo's official list of day one games. Pushed back to avoid potentially decent Black Friday sales? Maybe. Maybe it's still a launch title, which just means EA isn't doing a good job of spreading the word, as even Nintendo doesn't know the game's coming out. Again, either way, this release is at best two weeks after that of Mass Effect Trilogy for 360.

• inexperienced development studio: check. Surely EA cares enough about this game, one of their only Wii U games planned for a launch window release, to put a good, respected team on the job? Nope, they're just making a port after all, let's get that Australian team whose entire resume consists of a single Need for Speed port to iOS. What experience! Surely they can come up with some amazing, innovative uses of the GamePad, and make a very high-quality product!

• no advertising: It's early to call this one. But there has been a distinct lack of hype for Mass Effect 3 for Wii U. EA had no presence at Nintendo's conference this past E3 to discuss their game (unlike Ubisoft and Warner Bros), simply dropping the title into the sizzle reel of Wii U games with no explanation. They had no presence at the Wii U press event earlier this month to discuss their game (unlike Activision). I'm pretty sure the only time we've seen ME3 on Wii U was at EA's summer showcase. Maybe there was a demo at the press event, but if there was, I can't find it.

Speaking of the summer showcase, EA spent a fair amount of time there justifying their Wii U games being inferior to the PS360 versions, something no other studio has had the gall to do.

oh yeah --

• bad pricing: seems pretty self-explanatory. it's dumb to ask people to pay full price for a game they can get for much cheaper on a different console. the fact that "they did it to PS3 too" doesn't make it more acceptable.

• bad box art: pretty straightforward, they took the original box art and added... plain text on a long black background reading "special edition." Doesn't it just grab your attention...?

1.  Do you have any evidence that ths is an inferior port?  Just because they haven't announced DLC, doesn't mean it's not coming.

2.  You do realize that games tend to get pushed back sometimes, don't you?  Especially when you're working with new hardware, which tends to be more difficult.

3. New developers have to start somewhere, and what better place than a port?  I can personally affirm that Mass Effect 3 is a fine port.  I played it at Nintendo's Wii U event, and it's basically identical to the X-Box 360 version.  The controls are great, graphics are pretty much identical, framerate is solid, and so on.  Touch controls are subtle but work really well.

4.  Why yes, yes there was a demo at the press event.  As I said, I played it and it was pretty cool.  As for a lack of E3 presence, there's a lot of games that had just as little E3 presence.  I guess Epic Mickey, Tekken Tag Tournament, Darksiders 2, NBA 2k13, Fifa, Madden, Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing, Ninja Gaiden Razor's Edge, and others are also being sent out to die?

Activision got to go on stage at the press event because they were confirming games that hadn't been confirmed and because Black Ops 2 is kind of a big deal.  At E3 Nintendo likely just wanted one third party port on display to show that the Wii U can do those kinds of games.  Batman Arkham City probably got the nod because WB interactive is supporting the Wii U with other games.  Likewise, Ubisoft is showing VERY strong Wii U support, so it's pretty clear why they got stage time.  Not every game got an in depth preview at Nintendo's event, but that doens't mean they're being sent out to die.  It just means that time is limited.

Speaking of EA trying to downplay the Wii U, I didn't read every comment from every rep at their summer showcase.  I did talk to the head developer for Madden 13 Wii U while I was at Nintendo's press event, and he seemed quite intent on making the project as successful as it could be.  I'd assume the guys workiing on other Wii U projects felt the same way.

5.  They did it on PS3 too.  It may not make it a good or fair business practice, but it goes against any anti-Nintendo conspiracy ideas. Plus it sold pretty well on the PS3.  That's what EA tends to do.  At least it comes with From Ashes.

6.  And the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 featured the same boxart as the X-Box version, with white text on a black background talking about the included DLC.  If they thought that the X-Box version had great boxart, why would they try to change it for the Wii Version?  They're not trying to attract people who already bought the game.

Actions speak louder than words. The Wii U version of Madden 13 is feature-crippled.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

For the record, the framerate on the Wii U version is actually pretty smooth. This is not the case on the PS3 or 360, so in that sense, at least, the port is superior.

Except it uses the old physics engine from 2012.  This wouldn't be that big a deal, except that the whole hype and selling point around 2013 (beyond the 2013 roster) is that it has this new and improved football physics engine that's supposed to be totally awesome and crap rainbows.  The WiiU version doesn't have this.

Who is going to buy the trilogy?

After all, the games have been out for a while. And is it worth $60 to play the first game on PS3?

Is that not the same argument being used against ME3 on the Wii?

That is what makes ports just a risky proposition when they are not close in time.

Personally, I have no interest in ME3. I just want the NFS to come out on WiiU.

Mike from Morgantown

I will, seeing as I never owned the original or ME3 AND you dont have to buy the trilogy for PS3 just to play part 1, the game will be available as a standalone on PSN FYI. Its not the same argument at all, your comparing a collection to one single game, a single game that is being sold at full price at that.

A few more thoughts (all sales numbers from VGC).

* A total of 2.67M (ME1), 2.97M (ME2), and 2.46M (ME3) units of Mass Effect games worldwide on X360. So there might not be a big market on that console.

* The PS3 versions have sold 1.19M (ME2) and 0.93M (ME3). So there is a potential market of people who did not pick up the series because they could not play the first game.

* The lower sales of ME3 might mean the series is in decline -- which is also not good for the WiiU version.

* Compelation triologies can be risky. For example Metroid Prime 3 sold 1.63M worldwide on Wii while Trilogy two years later sold just 0.66M (with no sales listed in Japan).

* The games are listed as being compatable with other versions so people can play on line. There is no metion of save file compatability though it appears to be assumed (But it was not present for MP3 on Triology on the Wii so it is not guaranteed).  And Bioware has been silent about DLC -- which means it probably is NOT included (but that DLC for ME3 is on the WiiU version).

* The PS3 version is "at a later date." That coud be a week, a month, or a year from the X360/PC release.  My guess is that it is at least after Nov. 20 which would mark the five-year anniversary since ME1 released.

Oh my gosh people here are stupid. Do you think EA is really devoting time, money, and manpower to porting a game that they want to fail? Why in the world would they do that? They definitely don't like losing money.

The Mass Effect Trilogy that's coming out could very well be a decision that was made AFTER Mass Effect 3 Wii U began. We don't have a solid release date for the PS3 version of Mass Effect, so it's quite possible work on that port started recently, after licensing issues were resolved with Microsoft.

EA is porting Mass Effect to the Wii U, because they want to make it a juggernaut franchise, and they need it to be as visible as possible to as many audiences as possible. They're hoping that gamers who don't own a 360 or a PS3 have heard of the franchise and will buy it for the Wii U. It's as simple as that.

Is Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U a poor and misguided idea? Yes. Is this an intentional plan by EA to waste their time, money, and resources? No, that would be stupid. Is it an effort to not develop on the Wii U? No, EA isn't going to turn down a potential revenue source, and if they don't think the Wii U is viable, they could simply not develop for it. No zany scheme is required.

Sometimes a stupid move is just a stupid move with no wacky explanation behind it. Use your heads people.

Do not try to give reason to the many Nintendo conspiracy theorists on here, many have tried, all have failed, others lost limbs and many are now dead.

"Looking at it as a single incident, the "conspiracy theories" don't make much sense. But there is a recurring pattern with EA games on Nintendo platforms (at least since a certain point of the Wii's existence), and this is just the latest example.

I agree, this probably isn't about spite, but those of you who are laughing at any theory that EA could be sabotaging its Nintendo games on purpose are very, very naive. This isn't a game, and in the business world, people don't get to where they are at this level by being nice.

1. This is a huge company in a multi-billion business.

2. People are murdered daily for much smaller sums than what is at stakes here. Not that this is what is happening here at all, haha, just illustrating how serious the amounts at stake are and how much further than just "absurd" sabotage some people would go for far lesser amounts.

3. EA might possibly have some prior agreements or obligations towards Nintendo, from the time they were "buddies" in E3 2011, that it can't just ignore (without ramifications) by not publishing any game on the WiiU.

4. EA have their stake holders that need appeasing, surely some (many?) of whom might think EA would be losing money by not investing in core games on the WiiU initially

5. A million dollars or so is pocket change for EA, no matter how you look at it, especially if they think it will save them a lot more money down the road.

Now suppose that Peter Moore and/or a sizable faction at EA thinks that EA is better off not investing in core games on the WiiU at all, and that it will lose a lot of money and resources if it invested in the WiiU.

Now suppose there is a large group of share holders who don't think the same way. Unlikely? I wouldn't think so at all (just look at all the share holders clamoring for Nintendo to publish their games on IOS, and that is REALLY stupid).

So on the one hand: EA, by spending pocket change, brings a "prestigious quality game" to the WiiU so they can't be blamed for the quality of the game nor the quality of the port itself (thus shutting up shareholders and possibly Nintendo if there were some prior obligations), and so EA will be able to say "we tried"

And on the other hand, EA goes the extra mile to make sure it fails commercially.

End result: shareholders shut up, Nintendo (if there were prior obligations) can't say anything (though internally they will realize they have been given the shaft), and EA can go ahead without core game investment in the WiiU which they think will be a waste. And all it cost them was pocket change.

If you think shareholders are all smart and would see through something like that, think again. All EA needed to completely shut up any investor push for core games on the Wii was Dead Space Extraction's initial NPD month sales of 9000

I am not saying it is a fact that this is what happened, just that in this world something like this is very possible (and the recurring pattern makes it even more likely)."

Just making sure you read this. There's more evidence for than against here.

The only way to disprove it is if EA's delay of ME3U is actually them switching to the Trilogy version. Otherwise, this is deliberate self-sabotage.

1. Ok.

2. People would kill people to make money.  Not to lose money.

3.  You do realize that the Origin Wii U rumor has never been confirmed?

4.  So, tell the stockholders that you don't think it's the right platform for their games.  That's what Nintendo does when people ask them to produce mobile games.  Shareholders don't really make decisions like that, and I'm not sure there is a huge clamoring for Wii U games.

5.  A million dollars is not something EA would throw away casually on a halfbaked anti Wii U scheme.  Big companies like this tend to be very focussed on NOT losing money.  I'm not sure where you got a million dollars (could be more could be less), but that's only part of the cost.  There is also a little thing called opportunity cost.  EA is devoting resources and employees to this project.  What game are they not developing because they are developing this one?

Plus, EA is releasing several other games for the Wii U.  They're doing Madden, they're doing Fifa, they're doing Medal of Honor, and Need for Speed is practically confirmed for the console.  How many times do they need to prove their point to investors?  Do they want Medal of Honor to fail too?  Need for speed?  That's a lot of wasted time and effort for a console they don't want to bring games to.

Oh, and Dead Space Extraction was a generally well received game.  It sold poorly, but most people who played it really seemed to enjoy it, and at the very least it had great graphics.  Sometimes you release games and they flop despite your best wishes.  Just ask Red Steel 2.

@Mr Kahn-  By evidence do you mean random speculation?  Because that's all there was in that post.

Edit:

Madden 13 uses the Madden 12 engine.  The Vita version does too, because they were developed by the same team.  Madden ports to new consoles always lack features. Besides, now EA is producing yet another game they want to fail?  Boy they're really going out of their way for this.
