Forums - Nintendo - EA sent ME3 on Wii U to die.

Oh my gosh people here are stupid. Do you think EA is really devoting time, money, and manpower to porting a game that they want to fail? Why in the world would they do that? They definitely don't like losing money.

The Mass Effect Trilogy that's coming out could very well be a decision that was made AFTER Mass Effect 3 Wii U began. We don't have a solid release date for the PS3 version of Mass Effect, so it's quite possible work on that port started recently, after licensing issues were resolved with Microsoft.

EA is porting Mass Effect to the Wii U, because they want to make it a juggernaut franchise, and they need it to be as visible as possible to as many audiences as possible. They're hoping that gamers who don't own a 360 or a PS3 have heard of the franchise and will buy it for the Wii U. It's as simple as that.

Is Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U a poor and misguided idea? Yes. Is this an intentional plan by EA to waste their time, money, and resources? No, that would be stupid. Is it an effort to not develop on the Wii U? No, EA isn't going to turn down a potential revenue source, and if they don't think the Wii U is viable, they could simply not develop for it. No zany scheme is required.

Sometimes a stupid move is just a stupid move with no wacky explanation behind it. Use your heads people.

The problem there is that if us regular folks here on this forum realize what a stupid move this is for EA, how is it possible that EA themselves don't realize what they're doing? Is it possible that a bunch of normal people can look at this situation and see that EA is clearly making a huge mistake, while the educated, professional producers and marketers at EA don't understand the consequences of their own strategy?

There are two possible answers to this question. The first is that the educated professionals at one of the biggest, most successful third-party developers in the business are secretly blithering idiots who are far less knowledgeable or aware of how their business works than every other person who knows anything about games.

The second possible answer is that EA knows exactly what they are doing. I remind you that they aren't one of the most successful third party developers for no reason, and encourage you to come to your own conclusion based on this logic.

It isn't like this is the first time that a major company made an exceedingly poor decision.  EA and Bioware's entire handling of the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle is proof of this. But the idea that EA is making what many, including myself, think is a poor decision is alot more likely than the possibility that EA is making some Wile Coyote type scheme to make a poorly selling game.  IF they didn't want to make games for Nintendo, all they have to do is release a statement saying "the Wii U does not coincide with EA's company goals at the moment" and blah blah blah.

And of course, there is the possibility that we're wrong, and this is a decent decision.  Maybe they'll make money on this, and they'll get experience working with the Wii U hardware to make future ports easier.

If you bothered to read the thread, the idea is that EA has to sastify the share holders, showing that they are putting shit and giggles on a popular platform. They will then have a proof that they can't sell games on Nintendo platforms. It is surprising easy to sabotage one's own product.

Why would it cripple its sales? If you were going to buy ME3 for Wii U I would have to assume that you dont have a PC PS3 or 360 to play the game, so it doesnt matter if those systems got a trilogy or not as you would not have been purchasing it anyway and if you have those systems my question would be why have you not bought it for either of those three? Why choose to pay more money if you dont have too? Which brings me to my next point, the game alone is not worth 60 bucks trilogy or not, as you can get it for three other platforms for half the price. As i said before ME3 on Wii U simply doesnt make alot of sense. THe release is wrong and the pricing is wrong. Maybe they think lighting will strike twice and it will sell more than a mil like the PS3 version of 2 did, alot of people thought that would flop as well

It would cripple its sales because before people could argue if it was worth 60 dollars or not (all DLC included, additional functionallity with the gamepad), now EA itself is telling everyone that IT IS NOT! Besides some people will wait for a trilogy version for Wii U that may or may not come, instead of buying ME3U so that is also a lost sale. I was thinking about buying Wii U edition when it reached 40-50 dollars (hate buying DLC separate) now I will not do it at all, EA is telling me is not worth it and will most likely buy the PS3 trilogy instead, so you can count at least 1 lost sale.

There was never any argument, I cant think of a person who thought that the game would be worth 60 bucks, matter of fact it wasnt. Even with all the added DLC it woud still be more expensive than any other version. At least for me and a few others i never thought the game would be worth that much on WIi U.

This would be great if THEY were doing the port, but EA gave it to an external company, an australian one called Straight Right and it seems they are taking advantage of the experience as they are already working on another 2 titles for the console. "We've made a few bets on Wii U actually so we're certainly hoping it does well. In addition to ME3 we have an original Wii U title in development, and we've started on another big game in a well known franchise that will be released in 2013". - CEO of Straight Right Tom Crago

As I see it is a lose-lose proposition for EA, they are expending money so another company learns about the console not them, they are messing with the sales by announcing the trilogy and launching it (at least for 360) before the full price ME3 for Wii U, so its hard not to think that either there is some kind of conspiracy (unlikely) or there is a serious communication problem inside EA that does not let themselves to see this big mistakes that could hurt the final income.

Given the trilogy for the PS3, Xbox360 and PC they should really be releasing the whole trilogy for the WiiU.

Maybe it would be easier to convince me that this isn't what they're doing if EA hadn't done it before. This game bears all the markings of an EA intentional flop:

• inferior version of an existing product: check. Even if the trilogy wasn't happening, I haven't found anywhere confirmation, or even a mention, that the Wii U version will be supported with post-release DLC. Sure, it comes with From Ashes packed-in, but will Wii U players ever get to play Leviathan, Omega, or future DLC adventures? We still don't know, but it doesn't sound like they will!

• bad release date: check. last month it was reported to be a launch title for Wii U, but now it doesn't appear on Nintendo's official list of day one games. Pushed back to avoid potentially decent Black Friday sales? Maybe. Maybe it's still a launch title, which just means EA isn't doing a good job of spreading the word, as even Nintendo doesn't know the game's coming out. Again, either way, this release is at best two weeks after that of Mass Effect Trilogy for 360.

• inexperienced development studio: check. Surely EA cares enough about this game, one of their only Wii U games planned for a launch window release, to put a good, respected team on the job? Nope, they're just making a port after all, let's get that Australian team whose entire resume consists of a single Need for Speed port to iOS. What experience! Surely they can come up with some amazing, innovative uses of the GamePad, and make a very high-quality product!

• no advertising: It's early to call this one. But there has been a distinct lack of hype for Mass Effect 3 for Wii U. EA had no presence at Nintendo's conference this past E3 to discuss their game (unlike Ubisoft and Warner Bros), simply dropping the title into the sizzle reel of Wii U games with no explanation. They had no presence at the Wii U press event earlier this month to discuss their game (unlike Activision). I'm pretty sure the only time we've seen ME3 on Wii U was at EA's summer showcase. Maybe there was a demo at the press event, but if there was, I can't find it.

Speaking of the summer showcase, EA spent a fair amount of time there justifying their Wii U games being inferior to the PS360 versions, something no other studio has had the gall to do.

oh yeah --

• bad pricing: seems pretty self-explanatory. it's dumb to ask people to pay full price for a game they can get for much cheaper on a different console. the fact that "they did it to PS3 too" doesn't make it more acceptable.

• bad box art: pretty straightforward, they took the original box art and added... plain text on a long black background reading "special edition." Doesn't it just grab your attention...?

You have to add somewhere: trying to charge full price for a product that can be found in another plataform at half the price. You know like... pay us 50 dollars for Dead Space Extraction on Wii, or have it in HD for free if you preorder DS2 on PS3 or just pay us 15 to buy it on PSN.

Fixed it, just for you. :P

As ME3 isn't new anymore, it could also make sense to directly release the trilogy on WiiU. But as some pointed out, doing this way EA hopes to sell more copies. It's not necessarily malicious, WiiU comes late for ME3, the situation about it would be tricky anyway.

Edit: did anybody read WiiU's launch lineup?
http://www.gamrreview.com/news/89287/wii-u-launch-lineup-officially-confirmed/
With Mario, Sonic and Just Dance on Day 1, and many other new titles, older titles like ME3 would have very little left, whatever the strategy.
