Forums - Politics Discussion - How would voter ID laws prevent non-U.S citizens from voting?

What?

I just explained how a voter ID would stop people who registered illegaly!

People register illegally because you don't have to show proof you are a US citizen.

The strict voter ID laws require you to show US Citizenship to prove who you are...

Here... let me give you an example.

Say Wayne Gretzky flys down to florida from canada and registers to vote.  He checks the box saying he's a US Citizen.

Now Wayne Gretzky goes to vote on voting day....

To vote... Wayne Gretzky will need to prove he's Wayne Gretzky by showing a Drivers liscense or State ID that

To get a State Picture ID,  Wayne Gretzky will need to provide his birth certificate and social security number.

'

Wayne Gretzky will NOT be able to produce either of these.

So despite registering illegally Wayne Gretzky can't vote, because he can't prove he's Wayne Gretzky.

An ID isn't going to catch this.  An ID is used to identify a person as who they are.  If the registration system is sloppy, as is seen with the report I posted, then having the person present an ID isn't going to catch it.

Why wouldn't it?

In the post you JUST quoted, I posted exactly why it would.

You have offered no reason why this wouldn't be the case.

As for absentee balloting?   How about you need to present your ID to be given an Absentee ballot?

Not that hard really.

In some states illegals can get a state issued ID or even a drivers license.

So change those laws.  Or make it so that those IDs are specifically labeled vs IDs for people int he country legitamitly.

If I say "papers please" that should make mention of the entire line of arguments against the direction the ID thing is going in, and what happens.  But, in this, the issues would need to be addressed in the registration process, NOT at the polls.  If you have sloppy voter registration, no amount of ID requirements will fix it.

Except that's not an arguement of why it wouldn't fix something.

It totally would fix everything you mentioned.  It's just not a solution you like.

The ID's would fix the problems in the registeration process for those who registered feloniusly would not be able to vote.

Of coruse you could also just require such Id's for those who register to vote, when they register to vote.

Require a social security number to vote or an ID form that requires a social security number/green card number.

Neither of those are proofs that you are a US citizen. I should know, I have both and I am definitly not a citizen...

Pretty much everyone working in the US with a visa will have a social security number and can not legally vote..
