So do you lose google maps when you uprade to iOS 6?

Yes, but Google has a new Maps app on the way.

I don't see what the fuss is about other than blind consumer rage and media hype trolling the internet, looking for shit to write about inflammatorily and get clicks from it. New services are often buggy. Does it suck? Yes, it does. But everyone with a brain saw this coming weeks ago. I told two of my biking-friendly pals to avoid iOS6 until a Google Maps app is released. The writing was on the wall; new services that replace older, established services often suffer for a time. If this is still a huge problem in 6 months, then I'll be concerned. But right now, just wait it out. Few things get off the ground without several hiccups.

Didn't TomTom (the navigation systems maker) make those maps?

I seem to remember them making some big business deal with Apple.

Anyway, didn't try it yet.

What do apple gain by ditching google? can someone explain it please?

As someone above me said, money. But there was also more to it than that. Apple was getting Google Maps upgrades after Android. 3D rendering was one of the big ones... It didn't hit iOS for months until after it had been thoroughly "tested" on Android. Turn-by-turn directions was another big issue for Apple. By using a competitor's service that their competitor is using to prop up their own platform, Apple was putting themselves into a bit of a bind that wouldn't have played out well over the long-term. Without having some control over one of the major features on their platform, they were completely at the mercy of Google to roll out upgrades to the service.

There is no excuse for this. If they are going to get political and get rid of Google maps (to satisfy their thermonuclear vendetta) then they should have replaced it with mapping solution that is at least competent. This is the freaking iPhone 5 for crying out loud. What an embarrassment.

I'm not fussed about getting an iPhone but my housemate was showing me the maps last night and how impressive it was, now he is right, the 3D feature looks great but then I asked him to show our street.

Yeah, apparently was a very cloudy day that day. No matter how many roads they highlight, when you can't see anything there isn't much point.

Hmm, pie.

Of course it's terrible, they made a maps app in a few months... Do you honestly expect it to be as good as Google maps which has been around and built on and improved for nearly a decade?

Apple maps will be continually improved and it'll be as good as google maps in no time.

The thing your forgetting is that the whole word looks at Apple as the intervator. They make and comeout with stuff that no on thought about or did yet on a phone. So when something that sucks on a new Apple iphone or IOS platform people no nuts. No one wants to just admit that maybe Apple products are not what they once were and other platforms like Android are getting a little better in some areas then IOS.

There are actually tons of excuses for this. Some of the Maps data is user-sourced. What do you need to keep something accurate that is user-sourced?

Here's a hint... Users. iOS6 launched two days ago. The iPhone 5 launched this morning. It's going to take weeks to get enough users on the system to start ironing out some of these bugs. Bitching about it on launch day is really short-sighted. If these problems persist six months down the line, then there is a real problem to be addressed. But if Apple shores up the issues with the system in a matter of weeks, no one will even remember this happening.

Of course, it would have been nice if the system launched bug-free. But we're in reality. Large projects don't release bug-free. It's just the nature of the beast.

I see. I don't use maps at all, I probably never launched the maps app lol, that's why I have no idea what most of these problems about.
