Well, how many of those that launched with a $500 price tag had a 120 million+ selling predecesor?

FIXED

ummm..good point though....PS3 is bound to hit 100million due to the high selling predecessors(ps2 and ps1) plus a price cut LOL

just like me...a ps1 and ps2 owner, i don't own a PS3 360 or a wii.....the only console that interests me is the PS3...well it is really a matter of time b4 i get the PS3

Fixed again. It has been proven over and over again that sony has only produced 140m, not that 140m (or more) have actually been sold to the consumer. I'm sure they will make it there adventually, but they haven't hit it yet.

well i dont believe that for one second....ps2 passed 120million early last year plus the ps2 passed 100 million since 2005

i cant wait 4 Sony's next report on ps2 sales figures...july 2008 they stated it is at 140million....their next report should be out by march 2009

as of right now...i believe Sony sold 140million+ PS2 consoles to consumers

gues i will have to wait

If you look at the charts for the playstation 2 and playstation 3 you will see that they do follow a similiar path. For the most part though the PS2 leads the majority of the time. Down the line you see the Ps2 get a million unit seperation which then explodees to over 6 million unit lead. Now switching it over to weekly you see that on average the PS2 does better. Unfortunately the real weak point to the PS3 is holiday spikes. PS3 holiday spikes are absolutely pitiful in comparison to the PS2.

The PS3 is doing better than the Gamecube but the holidays spikes for both systems are about the same.

PS3 just doesn't compare to the PS2. Its competition is way better than what the PS2 had, not to mention they are also better than the PS3 itself. The PS3 holiday spikes are just disgraceful.

PS3 won't be able to reach the PS2 sales. It would be pretty lucky to get PS1 sales. They aren't way off with the exception of holidays so they could still turn things around with some good business moves at the right time.

The statement in July 2008 (made by David Reeves?) was a mistake.... he actually meant 130 million, not 140 million.

At that time in July Sony had not produced 140 million, they had just exceeded 130 million, BUT that figure is made up of PRODUCED consoles from before 2006, and only after March 2006 did they report SHIPPED.

The current figure for the PS2 as of September 2008 is 135.63 million.... but as said, that is a split total between produced and shipped.... the produced figure up to March 2006 is 117.89 million, and because this is produced and not shipped to retail, it will be about 1-2 million higher than what was shipped at the time.... which means this method is actually counting some PS2s twice. (and the reason Sony keep the figures seperate on this website:
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e.html )

So 135.63 million minus at least 1 million = 134.63 million.

Of course the problem then is that the "produced" figure from before March 2006 also will include numbers of PS2s which Sony gave out as replacements to faulty early models... of which there are quite a few. Arguably many PS2s will have been repaired rather than replaced, but the replaced figure will still at least be high enough to bring down the total shipped figure to just under 130 million.

So in fact the PS2 is not yet at 140 million.... though it should get there in time..... what you should do is perhaps trust (to a point) the figures VGC has, because both the Americas figure and the Japan figure are both well over what NPD and the Japanese trackersshow. In fact the Americas figure is almost 8 million higher than what NPD has, it is arguable whether all that will be made from Canada, Mexico and South America... while VGC has Japan figures 1 million higher than Famitsu.

Final UPDATE:

PS2 2001 - PS3 2008
USA - 6,758k <> USA - 3,924k
Japan - 3,830k <> Japan - 997k
Others - 5,648k <> Others - 5,409k
Total - 16,236k <> Total - 10,332k

PS2 vs PS3 = -5,904k

@kowenicki

I know you didn't mean it as harshly as it sounded

but lets see his view on this

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I'd say that he would have been pretty close if the 360 price cut did not happen...

Even The Source listed the unpredictability of such things as being able throw off sales predictions in your PS3 beats 360 LTD thread, remember Darth?

When you do region by region comparisons the PS3 has been tracking far below the PS2 ... The PS3 probably will never be nearly as popular as the PS2 because of decisions Sony made that ensure the PS3 could never be as popular as the PS2.

my 60% rule for CrazzyMan's prediction almost holds true for this one...

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Okay this has to be revived because of the Slim. But here's the totals of what they are now.

PS2                        PS3
USA - 21,372k <> USA - 9,590k
Japan - 11,477k <> Japan - 3,640k
Others - 16,242k <> Others - 11,560k
Total - 49,091k <> Total - 24,790k

PS2 vs PS3 = -24,301k

I think I did that right.

Edit: All of crazzymans original numbers are gone because he's permabanned :(
