Is this really an ENTIRELY good thing though?

I man, it's great for Nintendo that so many people want their system, but if production can't meet demand, won't that mean lost sales for them? (Surely some people who miss out won't be bothered to chase one up later one the launch hype dies)

Yes.  It's always a bad thing when you run out of stock.  Anyone in business will tell you that a lost sale might not come back.  That whole "but it creates hype" thing is a myth.  The only ones who profit from that are those who resale merchandise for higher prices.

You don't want stock sitting around for months, either, but I think that would hardly be a problem.  Nintendo is going to get as many units of the Wii U as they can out to retailers.  No surplus would last beyond the holidays.

Yeah sorry guys... got rid of my old one and picked this bundle up. Not that I'm not interested in the WiiU... it'll depend on my finances.

(I just want great JRPGs on it.. then I'll buy buy buy). :)

Fun fact: PS3 pre-orders were sold out as well.

The difference is that the PS3 didn't sell out the day after pre-orders opened.   Nor did it sell out at every retailer.

ShopTo.net (big online video game retailer in the UK) is reporting the Wii U just smashed their largest console pre-order figures.

It's not the fact it is sold out that is of significance, it's how fast and how wide the sell out is.

The difference is that with Wii U, and the controller specifically, is still supply constrainted (Nintendo has not mentioned that they ever resolved it), they probably put a low number for the amount of preorders...so how fast it sold out is irrevleant becuase we dont have a number.

ShopT.net's report just contradicted what you said.

How can they have the largest pre-order totals ever if their allocation was restrictively low?

Less people ordering online back in the day?

I was actually in the process of trying to find more information about Shopto, e.g. when did they open for business and stuff try to make a virtual apples to apples comparsion.  Its one thing for a company like ATT to say that preorders are extremely strong for the iphone 5, then give out numbers, and another for a website i personally never heard of say "hey guys look at us! mega sellouts over here" and silent on any number or percentage.

Amazon, why don't you take pre-orders???, I'm still waiting!!!

I suppose there might have been less people taking pre-orders just before the 3DS and Vita launched but probaly not by much.

You don't like in the UK which is why you've probably never heard of them.

I do believe I noted they were a UK online retailer in my post.
