Is this really an ENTIRELY good thing though?

I man, it's great for Nintendo that so many people want their system, but if production can't meet demand, won't that mean lost sales for them? (Surely some people who miss out won't be bothered to chase one up later one the launch hype dies)

Yes.  It's always a bad thing when you run out of stock.  Anyone in business will tell you that a lost sale might not come back.  That whole "but it creates hype" thing is a myth.  The only ones who profit from that are those who resale merchandise for higher prices.

You don't want stock sitting around for months, either, but I think that would hardly be a problem.  Nintendo is going to get as many units of the Wii U as they can out to retailers.  No surplus would last beyond the holidays.
