Sony won't release their system for several more years. Everything Sony is doing right now is screaming that its a long ways off. Although if Wii U does well and kills PS3 sales, it might just force Sony's hand. And no, that isn't idle speculation, its a really well thought out guess. EVERYTHING is saying Sony won't release for a LONG time. So for the moment, Sony is going to be copying whatever Nintendo and Microsoft does to try and deflate their sales.
The threat is from Microsoft. At the earliest I see it being announced at E3 this coming year. Simply because its traditional to make console announcements at E3. (At least that's what I am guessing. Never seen one outside of it but I haven't looked at every console release) In fact, I think it's downright likely to be announced at E3, especially if Nintendo does well with the Wii U.
Halo is a system seller but I don't think they want to identify their console with Halo their signature FPS. It will probably be bundled with a sports title. Probably a hardcore version of Wii Sports... They will of course have a version that doesn't come with a bundled game, but they have been trying and are still trying to distance themselves from being called the FPS console with nothing but FPS on it.
Their major focus is going to be trying to improve on what Nintendo has already done with the Wii U while maintaining their FPS capabilities. No one doubts that XBox has FPS and the hardcore satisfied. They unlike Sony are capable of innovating their console. Problem is that they will either screw it up or they will hit the nail on the head. They have actually been doing a lot of things right in these past 10 years and I believe they will be the real threat here. In my opinion though I don't believe that they have enough pull in all the areas Nintendo has pull in and will at best, dig out a larger niche market that Nintendo doesn't have access to.
Mobile gaming might hurt Nintendo. Might not. I don't believe they can do anything they haven't already done to be honest. If it was going to collapse the gaming empire it would have already done it by now. Maybe if they added some legitimate controls to the system. Right now the whole system as a gaming platform is a joke in my eyes. But I understand that lots of people are still buying it.
My boss has a mobile gaming device, but its a bottom end one and ill admit their are probably better versions of the games he plays on more advanced phones. But the ones that he has made me cringe. Right next to one of the attack buttons on the touch screen was the reset console button, and every 5 minutes he or me would accidentally hit that button instead of the attack button, and yes we would have to start all over again. Like I said, that's probably just because the phone we were using for it sucked, but it certainly deterred me from even looking at mobile gaming seriously... I would have to hear some raving reviews before I would ever consider it at the moment.
