Forums - General - How can I be a better poster

Hi guys, here is going to be a thread where we can talk about ourselves and encourage each other to be better posters.

Every time and again, you will have a thread saying that certain people behave in a certain way and it bothers them, or it turns them off. I've personally been working hard at being a better poster and not making their times here less fun. It's been a difficult ride at times, but it was worth the effort in the end.

I'll start by saying some things I have been working on, and then establish some ground rules so this thread can work.

What I've been working on myself:

Some people have told me I can be obnoxious. How I've been working on that is by giving a chance to let others post or reply to things I usually want to be the first to reply to. I've also worked on improving my tone so as to not sound like a smarty pants or a nag. Instead of asking questions, I've been tryign to state my questions. For example, instead of saying "do you own the game?" I would say something like "I take that you don't own the game."

Some people have made me understand that I am not discreet enough. I will say things that were discussed in private when I shouldn't have. I've been working on this by thinking twice whenever there's that voice inside of me saying "you might not want to post that", and then thinking "what in there should I not say about this or that person that was private".

Some people have made me understand that I talk out of my hat sometimes. To try to fix that, I've been trying to get my hands on as many games as I possibly can without going totally broke, and research my posts to the maximum before getting my post out.

Some have said that I tout my horn too much. Well, I simply try to find a more appropriate time to "final fantasy fanfare" my experiences in general. :]

Some say I'm not tough enough, that I'm too sensitive. I try to work on that by not taking their attacks too personally and by being more playful, looking for ways to pull their legs and roughen them up in return a bit.

You might think "what's the point of all this?". Ultimately, all it means is that we're a community and we're meant to be a unit together, a stronger bond than the other communities if possible. We do that by improving the cohesion between the different people in the community with simple efforts on some of the desires expressed by them.

With that, a few small rules so this works:

1) Let's not use this as a place to call people out, unless specifically requested by a person.

2) Let's not use this as a place to preach best behaviors specifically to a poster, unless specifically requested by a person.

3) Let's use this as a place to show others the tricks we've used to better ourselves.

4) Let's use this as a place to request more better behaviors, only not in a way that would be obviously seen as directly related to a user's post.

Well, let's let the ball roll and see where this goes.

I'm wondering this myself. No matter what I say, there are always the usual suspects calling me names or trying to argue with me just for the sake of "its Tuuuhkish" like in that thread yesterday.

@padibullah, I think you need to be more open & honest with your opinions and not care what people think about you. You can't please 'em all. I'm saying this because sometimes I see you saying stuff, and it is clear what you mean, but you don't push your point across becuase you maybe feel that it will make certain users dislike you

Thanks, that helps.

Reminder of the rules: let's talk about ourselves first (though as OP I'll be okay with constructive criticism), and offer advice when requested.

So if this helps MBP, I'm open to requests.

To follow with my effort to know about things before speaking, it would help to have the link just to better understand.

Do you think there's a reason why that happens and would there be any way for us (ourselves) to fix that with our own effort? Hopefully others can share so you, I and others interested in the OP question can get some ideas we could use.

I will try to be a better poster by posting better jokes than badgenome and d21 whenever possible. It is time they realize that they don't hold a duopoly on humor.

I first thought you where posing for a poster. I am good poster but I can´t those goddamn fanboys and haters I think the best way to talk about stuff is to do it rationally. This is why I don´t like to talk about Bioware I am too much of a Bioware fanboy and I can´t discuss that topic rationally.

You can give 50$ to each member.

It will make the best poster ever.

I mistook this title as "How can I be a better pornstar?"

I think you're a great poster as you are currently.

Don't make long posts. I don't read long posts.
