Why even do a two year contract? Who want to be tied down to a cell phone for 2 years? Is it because you just really like the iphone?


For the subsidy.

Here in Canada, I can get an iPhone for $200 + contract for ~$60 a month or I can buy the iPhone outright for $650 and pay ~$60 a month for service. You get no monthly discount for bringing your own phone, so unless you plan on jumping between carriers (travellers will often want to do this), there's no reason not to take the $450 discount.

Different markets, different conditions, but carrier subsidies on iPhones tend to be bigger than for other smartphones, further encouraging contracts.

My phone (Iphone 3g) is almost 4 years old now. I need to upgrade as it is slowing down quite a bit. Either this or the new Windows phone Lumia 920.

Walmart Selling No-Contract T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II

Are you searching for a sweet Android smartphone that doesn't require a contract? Look no further.

Head on over to Walmart and you can now get your hands on T-Mobile's version of the Samsung Galaxy S II with no annual contract. The device went on sale this morning at Walmart for $299. It must be sold with a T-Mobile 4G no annual contract plan of at least $30 per month, but users can discontinue the service whenever they want.

The $30 plan offers up to 5GB of data at up to 4G speeds, unlimited text, and 100 minutes of talk. Customers will have to pay 10 cents per minute after they use up the first 100 minutes. The plans do not require an annual contract, credit check, or deposit.

Walmart is also offering the Samsung Galaxy S II though its Family Mobile service, a contract-free plan powered by T-Mobile's network that was specifically designed for families. It costs $45 per month for the first line and $35 per month for additional lines and provides unlimited access to Web surfing, data, and social media for all lines on the account. The base plan includes the first 250MB of data per month at up to 3G speeds.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S II will also soon arrive at Boost Mobile for $360 upfront.

Although it's over a year old, and the Samsung Galaxy S III   has since taken the smartphone world by storm, the Galaxy S II is still an excellent device. It features a dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, a gorgeous screen, and fast HSPA+ 42 speeds.

That's nice.

But plenty of Americans don't have good access to T-mobile's network, and they don't operate at all in Canada.

Here I can buy an unlocked SGS2 for $500 on Newegg, or I can get one on contract for a penny, and pay the same price for service on either. So yeah, unless I expect to be switching carriers in the next two years, I think I'll save myself $500 and sign the contract.

I already have the iPhone 4 and I don't really see a difference between it and the iPhone 5 : Think it'd be a waste of money to upgrade...Only thing I like is the two-toned back.

I'm waiting to see what is announced. My current phone is dieing fast and I need an upgrade. If the iPhone 5 is worth it I'll upgrade to that, if not I'll be hoping on an iPhone 4S real quick.
