Forums - Nintendo - To you who have been gaming since the NES/SNES...old Nintendo vs modern Nintendo

I like old Nintendo more just because I like 2D games more.

I started with the NES and Zelda 1 and Super Mario Bros and Metroid were my very first Video games. The NES had also really strong third party titles like Mega Man and Castlevania. I still play these old classics from time to time and I really like the Virtual Console for this.

Then SNES was a huge step forward because you had a greater variety of Genres. This was the Time when I played my first few JRPGs like Terranigma or Actraiser (No Final Fantasy in Europe ...). Zelda 3 is still my most favourite Nintendo game... it was absolutely brilliant. Its a shame that they went away from the bird view (thats why I really liked 3d Dot Game Heroes for the PS3... a great Hommage). Super Mario World is still my favourite Mario Game. It is a pity that they forfaited the two player mode when they went 3D.

But to be honest, Nintendo lost me with the N64. I wanted to buy it for the new Zelda, but somehow the new 3D-games didn't caught my interest. I have bought a PS1 before and I the games I saw there just blew me away. Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid... They all delivered something that Nintendo just do not want to deliver... Characters and Storytelling.

Nintendo Games still put their focus on the gameplay, but that is no longer enough for me. "Ratchet and Clank" and "Jak and Dexter" succeeded in combing Jump'n'Run with funny characters and Dialogues. Final Fantasy tries to make you think about deep philosophical matters, Assassin's Creed brings you back to the Renaissance in Italy.

So Nintendo will aways have a place in my heart... But for games like Zelda 3, Metroid or Super Mario World. But nowadays I will prefer Ratchet and Clank to Mario or Final Fantasy XIII to Zelda because they offer more than just gameplay.

Well, Nintendo just wants to be the "Family Console", where parents can play together with their kids. Thats a decision and they deliver exactly what they want. But this also narrows down their game design because it has to be accessible to kids as well.

The next thing that I didn't like about Nintendo from the N64 era on I just hated their controller. The Wii Mote maybe was the selling point of the Wii... but Motion Controls are simply a bad control scheme for me. It is nice for Mini-Games but you simply have to sacrifice smooth controls and button variety for it.

What I really like about the "New" Nintendo is that they are not so keen on the online thing. Assassin's Creed, God of War, Uncharted... everyone tries to tack on an online mode. I hope this hype dies down because online multiplayer modes of most games are almost dead after several months and you often have troubles with finishing your online trophies.

I agree with Nintendo that it is just more fun playing with your wife or your Kid in the same room as to play with a complete stranger who behaves like an idiot and thinks he is so funny. No insulting, no cheating, no stress.

So, all in all, I think that I really liked the 2d Nintendo games. But as I grew older I started to miss the story telling and character development in Nintendo games. They are still very good games gameplay wise but I started to miss something when I play the newer games since the N64 era. If you have played games like Jak and Dexter or Ratchet and Clank, you will probably understand what I mean. Jrpgs are something difficult to compare because Nintendo simply do not offer them (ok, Pokemon is NOT a JRPG for me because it lacks the focus on storytelling and character development. If you have played games like Final Fantasy or Suikoden you will probably understand what I mean...)

Can't they just be both? Sometimes I wonder what's so complicated for them to understand that.

This, but in their defense they were never really big on those types of games anyway. Thats where 3rd parties come in but we know what happened there,(especially this gen). Doesnt look great when you see a bunch of Just Dance knockoffs and not an AC or GTA in sight. But i think they are changing course with the Wii U, i might be meh on it now, but i still think it has a brighter future than Wii did. There getting better 3rd party support than Wii ever did and the system hasnt even released yet IMHO

Starfox, Zelda a Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Zelda I, Zelda II, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros.,  Myke Tyson's Punch Out!! all tell a different story.

So yes, they know how to make games that appeal to the core gamers.

None of those are adult themed, maybe Metroid. Im talking the Mortal Kombats, GTAs, etc. Stuff like that which they never really made in those days unless you know of some of those.

Our definition for adult themes does not agree. I don't need to pull out spines and bang prostitutes to satisfy my need for more older themes.

Games like Metroid and Mike Tyson's Punch Out work just fine for me.

I was there man, the NES had graphics like you wouldn't believe. We had just come from the era of Atari and Coleco. Sure the Master System had more power, but it didn't have the graphics. The NES had smooth scrolling graphics that made you think you were playing a cartoon show.  Home computers even had trouble doing that. In processing power it may not have been top dog, but graphicaly it was a show stopper. And I did say graphical powerhouse.

I'd rather have a Gamecube 2 than the Wii. I don't like motion controls, even when done right like in Skyward Sword. It would have been a much better game without motion controls. Honestly, if my choices are "Gamecube 2 fails so Nintendo goes 3rd party like Sega" or "Wii motion controls, Wii U Tablet gimicks", I'll take the 3rd party Nintendo with standard controls for multiplatform Mario, Zelda, and Metroid.

That's coming from someone who's been playing Nintendo games since before there was a Nintendo Home Entertainment System. It would be sad to see an end of an era, but the painfull lose of Sega consoles taught me that the name on the machine doens't matter so long as I still get the games, with standard controls that is.

So was I and Master System blew it out the water for power. Don't get me wrong the NES was a much better console as it had a far stonger library and pretty much all the support. I can't think of a NES game thats as colourful as this for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chEZY0L0SEs&feature=relmfu

The Master System also suffered from a lot less flicker and slow down in games. But having said that if you mean 'graphical powerhouse' as in the NES could handle anything that generation produced (which the Wii can't) then I agree with you. I guess it's like comparing the PS2 to the XBox.

As far as the rest of this thread goes I see a lot of people complaining that new Nintendo games lack challenge compared to their old one's and that they dont make enough new IPs.

Well first off I think games all round have got easier. Whats harder Mega Man or God of War? Also is Mario World for example much harder than NSMBWii? Or are we just remembering stuggling with it when we were 10 or whatever? Do we just think NSMBWii is easy because we honed or skills in the late 80s on 2D games like Castlevania? For example my 9 year old nephew can run around easily enough causing havoc in Saints Row 3 and loves it. I put NSMBWii in his hand and he struggled to finish levels on his own.

As far as new IPs go I half agree but unfortunately the industry relies on sequels and guarenteed hits to survive. We're always gonna have Resident Evil, Halo, Gran Turismo etc, its the way things are. Heck wasn't Gears of War meant to be a trilogy? We've already got another coming this year! God of War...  6 games in 8 years, 4 of which have been re-released twice already, and again we have another on the way. Do you think Gears/God of War won't be around in the late 2020's celebrating their 25th anniversaries?

Are Nintendo almost unlucky that they have too many IPs that people demand sequels to? Imagine the uproar if Zelda didn't make an appearence on the WiiU?

What Hideo Kojima done for the last 15 years?  Yet look how well received Zero Gounds has been

thats for you. but im sure there are millions of people who would disagree. Why else would Halo, GTA, AC, RDR, etc. sell millions of copies each?

fair enough. But then why cave in and buy another console if all you care about was the Ninty games in the first place? Just asking

I don't think I understand your question. A game is good to me regardless of violence. If AC was the same game but had sword slashes like PoP I'd be just as content, probably even more (since I don't enjoy graphic depictions of killing). In other words my enjoyment of a game rests on everything but violence and sex, so I enjoyed AC but not for the reasons  you think.
