Rol is generally correct in his assertion that you need to be careful not to tumble down the rabbit hole of trading insults with users who care little for their accounts (or, indeed, any users).  In this case you actually did quite well in your efforts to be civil, but you still said he was being delusional and childish.  Really you just engaged for far too long with a user who was just trying to piss you off, its inevitable that if you stay engaged you'll say something moderation-worthy.

At the time (I am trying to remember exactly) I am pretty sure I worked out that if I gave you a one day ban it would expire in 5 hours, a very light sentence.  So that you're aware, the other user was gone for three days.  After he got back it took only three more days before he did the EXACT same thing and got himself and someone else banned by another mod.

So to answer your question, you can keep arguing as long as you want if you keep personal insults of any flavour out of it.  But at the end of the day unless you have infinite patience (and no one does), continuing to talk to someone who is clearly just trying to annoy you will lead to you saying something that violates forum rules (I don't blame you, I am exactly the same, but just be mindful of it).  

Next time maybe just hit report and move on.

Given the completely clean history, i would have kept it at a warning (unless you dropped a warning in-thread).
