Here's the deal. If Sega had had cash on hand to keep Dreamcast alive, it would have done well. Certainly sold at least 50% more than either the GameCube or Xbox, and likely would have stunted PS2's success somewhat (simply by virtue of being a platform with momentum), could have gone as high as 40 million units given the rate they were working. Really, the Dreamcast was quite successful for where it was at the market at the time. The PS2's early success was merely part of the bad outlook that convinced Sega to pull the plug.

Plus it's not like wavering support from EA has hurt Nintendo in the past.

If Sega had the cash, the Dreamcast still would have flopped, the system was structurally doom to failed.  The age of piracy from the late 90s onward would have forced Sega in a new direction.

I am still trying to wonder who the Wii U is exactly targeted at.  If they are trying to get the core and the casual, Electronic Arts has to play a pivotal role in securing the hardcore gaming fan who buys 10 million+ copies of FIFA, 6 million maddens etc, it cannot weaver.  Without them or continued major 3rd party support, then half of the Wii U stragedy fails.

EA's just trying to screw Nintendo over because Nintendo didn't let EA screw them over by making Origin into the Wii U's online platform.

EA is already supplying all of their sports games with 1 or 2 ports at least.

It is getting support from Ubisoft and Activision. As it stands it isn't supreme, but they have the support of the biggest 3 companies. On the Japan side, thier focus is more handheld related but we know Square Enix is giving Dragon Quest X again.

In terms of the target audience, it should be obvious that it is more casual players first. NSMBU (important bridge game) Wii Fit U, and Nintendoland are all dedicated to them. There are also a few other minigame collections coming near launch window. In 2 weeks, we'll know everything about the launch and strategy.

Here is an update and different look at this interview from another site.

I think there is actually plenty of hype. But maybe the mainstream public are not that hyped yet?

Isn't that a contradiction to there being hype?  Or rather; isn't this the root of the "Nintendo is Domed!"?  Nintendo isn't doing what it should to get the "mainstream" public on board.

Both PS3 and Xbox 360 will out sell the Wii U this holiday season. No one is hyped for this thing. Not the core gamers, media of even past casuals the bought the Wii. I know it's from my own experience. But when i asked family members that own it or other non gaming friends if they were interested in the new Wii. They said, " i already have a wii that i don't use, why do i need a new one?". The Wii fad is long over, the core has settled down with Sony and MS and without much of an improvement, what motivation do the core have to pick this up? The window is very small, and with price drops expected from both Sony and MSi can't see the Wii U doing too well. Higher than the Gamecube for sure, but much lower than the Wii. Wii u should have been released at least 2 years ago if not 6.

1 year head start is huge for the sequel to the leading console of this gen, esp if it's going to be a cheapest console on the market. The rest pretty much doesn't matter.

Nintendo is playing its own game really. It doesn't need PS360 gamers to hop across, all it needs to do is convince the Wii Fit crowd to make the upgrade. The only Wii owners who are going to wait and see about Wii U are those who in the last year or 2 went out and got a PS3 or 360. And none of them are the Wii Fit demographic.

If they don't play the game system they have then (1) why would they buy another is year old system and (2) why would they buy a new "Wii" when to them they are thinking Pachter's WiiHD rathter than a new console? Seriously, this will move well over the holidays soon because it is the new thing. The future will depend on software and competition -- and the global economy. My guess is that it will outperform the analysts' expectations. They are all right now dusting off their doom predictions and calls for Nintendo games on other platforms. Personally, I think hype on the level of the Wii is over-rated and not necessarily ideal ...

Neither the 3DS nor the DS started off as strongly as the Wii did, and it is difficult to claim that either platform is really suffering from it. These platforms have been so successful because they steadily increased interest in their platform and interest peaked in the third/fourth year when production could meet demand; and this was driven primarily because the libraries steadily improved both from strong first and third party releases.

Launching first gives Nintendo a huge advantage but doesn't mean that they need to sell an extreme amount of systems in the first year. At this point in time unless the Wii U "flops" it will see decent support in year 2 because the risk associated with next generation development will likely translate into developers reducing risk by releasing games across as many platforms as possible (XBox 360, PS3, Wii U, PS4, XBox 720). What this means is year 1 for Nintendo is mostly about securing support for years 3 and 4; and year 2 will mostly be about securing support for years 4 and 5.

In my opinion, Nintendo's focus has to be on selling between 10 and 12 million units in their first year, and then selling 12 to 15 million units in year 2. From there their plan really will have to adjust to what Microsoft and Sony do.

That small window starts September 13 and untill launch. Nintendo gotta bring it on September 13's press event. After that, they got to blow up their marketing and open up Wii U kiosk for the public to try out. This is their last chance to hype up the Wii U to people.

Combined ?

Or just one single platform out of those outperforming the Wii U?

Nintendo will have to endure fantasy land expectations for the Nextbox and PS4, so they have a tough period ahead of them. But once the Nextbox and PS4 actually launch, disappointment will settle in. The Xbox 360 was unimpressive and the PS3 was unimpressive as well. Gosh, did these consoles suck in their first year on the market.

False.

The Xbox 360 was the best console of the current generation when it was released.
