Forums - Nintendo - Wii U faces 'narrow window of opportunity' says analyst ~ Yes, I can agree that they need to impress quickly!

Agreed, I believe the Wii U does have a narrow window of opportunity. But I think Nintendo possesses the talent and the business smarts to pass through it. And once they do, that window could very well shut in the face of Sony and MS ;)

You are right about how bad the PS3 was in its first year, but X360 had Call of duty 2 at Launch and Gears of war before the console completed its first year in the market.

Microsoft did everything right during 2006-2007.

(...)

So it had Cod2 at launch and GeoW almost one year later. Then in 2007 360s started to break at a rapid pace.

If the above qualifies as doing everything right, then we can declare Nintendo the winner of the eighth generation already, because they are set to outdo Microsoft's Xbox 360 start.

COD 2 wasnt that big. Its COD 4 that changed the industry... for better or worse.

Yay!!!

Well i agree. The Hardcore ninty fan will buy the Wii U just for games like Super Mario Bros , pikmin, Zelda and so on but the other hardcore gamers will likely wait for the new consoles ( because of more power, the exclusive franchises they playey on X Box and PS3).

And the casuals arent Nintendo loyal anymore as Microsoft and Sony startet to generate games for that audience this gen and will very likely continoue with that next gen. So the market will be more splitet this time as it was with the Wii.

In the end i think next gen there wouldnt be any winner or looser. All three will have their success. But Nintendo will not repeat Wii Levels of sales again.

If by narrow window of opportunity, he means one year, then yes.

Of course, I'm going off the assumption (no kooky predictions here) that Nintendo will be releasing 2-3 major, hardware selling releases based upon their top selling IPs right around or just before SCE and MS debut, which will compare favorably with what will likely be somewhat lackluster launch releases on the PS4 and Xbox 3 over the 2013 holiday season.

Generally, it takes about a year before the first must buy titles show up on new platforms. It took the better part of a year before the Xbox 360 received Gears of War and a bit less than a year before the PS3 started seeing titles like Uncharted. I see no reason why this will change this generation, although I'd be perfectly happy if either SCE or MS dictates otherwise.

On the third party title issue, it's more or less out of Nintendo's hands how developers choose to use or ignore the hardware advantages the Wii U has over the PS3 and Xbox 360. At worst, we could see ports that are anywhere from on par to even slightly worse, to ports that show a significant performance benefit in addition to the second screen user interface and tablet based input.

I would actually say the narrow window of opportunity is actually 2 years ...

Even if Sony and Microsoft have an unusually clean launch it will take at least a full year before their new systems are established; and if they fumble the launch it could take 2 or more years before they're ready. While these platforms are just getting started Nintendo can use that as an opportunity to sell hardware and attract third party support. Watching the 3DS and PS-Vita right now you can see this at play, while both systems fumbled a bit Nintendo recovered quickly, and with the head start the 3DS had it is able to capitalize on the struggling PS-Vita; as a result of this Nintendo's opportunity didn't end when the PS-Vita launched, after all it is a year after the launch and Nintendo still has the advantage.

Both PS3 and Xbox 360 will out sell the Wii U this holiday season. No one is hyped for this thing. Not the core gamers, media of even past casuals the bought the Wii. I know it's from my own experience. But when i asked family members that own it or other non gaming friends if they were interested in the new Wii. They said, " i already have a wii that i don't use, why do i need a new one?". The Wii fad is long over, the core has settled down with Sony and MS and without much of an improvement, what motivation do the core have to pick this up? The window is very small, and with price drops expected from both Sony and MSi can't see the Wii U doing too well. Higher than the Gamecube for sure, but much lower than the Wii. Wii u should have been released at least 2 years ago if not 6.

Combined ?

Or just one single platform out of those outperforming the Wii U?

Nintendo still has one year to prevent single platform early adoptees from buying an Xbox 3 or PS4.

As far as third party releases go, anything set to be released at launch or within the first year of availability is already well along the development pipeline, meaning there's no hard sell there; the Wii U will get at least those titles currently in development barring any 11th hour project cancellations.

If the big Nintendo titles that typically sell in the millions aren't there before the others debut (and I see no reason why there won't be at least 2 of these by holiday season 2013), you're going to have a lot of previous SCE and MS customers buying their respective console regardless of what will likely be lackluster launch release catalogs (I'd like to be wrong about the launch releases, but history says otherwise) as they will be buying hardware on the strength of what's been announced rather than just what's actually released.

I've done it plenty of times; any core demographic game consumer does it too.

While I've been quick to dismiss rumors until official statements are released from manufacturers, these unexpectedly low price rumors for the Wii U may play a strong hand in gaining a significant number of sales when compared with the prices of the Xbox 3 and PS4. If it's at least $100 difference, the Wii U may end up gaining a lot of converts simply because the gap in capabilities probably won't be so apparent when comparing 2nd year Wii U releases/ports against 1st year PS4/Xbox 3 titles.

Most people that I have spoken to (who aren't users on sites such as this) think that the Wii U is just a new controller add-on for the Wii console... Nintendo need to get this image out of customers minds if they are going to have the same success that the Wii enjoyed...

Even looking at DX11 maxed out BF3 PC and the gimped PS360 versions, many regular people struggle to see the difference let alone consoles that will be PS2-Xbox type of gap apart.

Even worse, if the Wii U really takes off (not as granted as Wii) it will be the lowest common nominator in multiplats, which means the most powerful console will get jeopardized just like Xbox facing PS2 generation, and just a handful of titles will push the most powerful system (if sales resemble somewhat the PS2 gen)

I remember just a few titles that really pushed the Xbox and have shown what it was really capable of doing.

Man I almost became a GamecubeXbox owner, but then I decided to go with PS2. But looking at this games in motion it looks like xbox was on its own gen between PS2 and 360.
